SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

When i first heard that SoE is down like the ps-network, my very first thought was "So what, human technology that is being developed and run by humans- and as Humans are involved, sh*t will happen. sometimes small , yes, but it's just a matter of time until some "big sh*t" happens.

Regarding the Anonymus-story, and the story of that guy soe sued for jailbreaking the ps3- i think that it was Sony's right to sue that guy.

Try to imagine, as long as a ps3 can only use the software/games given out for use with it, it's pretty much easy to handle warranty and security issues, as every console has same hardware and OS. That is the advantage consoles have if compared to a PC. (Something similar has been stated some time ago by some blizzard-cm on the question why linux isn't supported- the more the os diverses , the more complicated support is getting.) More important, the PS3 has been developed that way for reason, and i guess they calculated around these facts when they made their plans for security, support etc.

If then the customer gets the oppurtunity to apply further changes to the software, changes the company didn't invent and therefor doesn't know... that means a big threat to the security of the changed console, more work for the support- which surely can't be covered complete .

So , i think the first to blame is the jailbreaker. then, if involved- Anonymus should really learn more about WHO they are hitting with their attacks before they move again.

What do we, what do i have to do with that jailbreaker beeing sued?
Can we as a community, can I stop the events, make soe "unsue " him?

NO. We cannot change ANYTHING at all, and we are being punished by those oh so noble hackers. i guess these guy call us collateral damage...

So, it's not Sony making me angry. But i'm really pissed about those hackers that seem to be somehow socially disabled- as they can't seem to realize that they are hitting the innocent Playerbase which hasn't anything to to with the jailbreaks- and cannot change anything about it.

if these attacks where from anonymus: Shame on you !
if these where made possible through anonymus attack: Shame on you twice- i hope that this behaviour will return to you (i mean the hackers) like a bumerang and smash some plans when you don't expect it !

TOS Agreement
# May 09 2011 at 8:53 AM Rating: Decent
I believe, according to the TOS agreement that we all click that we agree to so we can play, SoE doesn't HAVE to give us anything for this downtime or anything else. Granted they would lose a LOT of players if they didn't give anything for the inconvienence of not being able to access the service so by offering what they have (free month AND 1 day per day the games are down) they are satisfying the customer service aspect of the business. The one free month would not break the company but to offer a free day for each day the service is unavailble could run into some serious money. As of today (5/9) the service has been down 8 days. We, as customers have netted 38 days of free game play. I think that is more than fair in this case since the company is NOT obligated to give us anything for this. If the service were unavailbe for an entire month I could see the fuss since we are then out our fee for the service but then again there is the TOS agreement which does NOT promise that service will always be available. I am more concerned that my ID is protected and that no one TRY to impersonate me. It would be REAL hard to fool my parents and spouse LOL.
Short story, SoE is not obligated for anything, so whatever they give they give in the spirit of good customer service.
Thanks I now return you to your orignially planned rants!
TOS Agreement

This is the reason I posted my message entitled Free Items? SOE is under NO OBLIGATION to do anything to compensate us. Nothing at all. Not even the Identity Theft or loss of CC information, since their ToS states they have no responsibility and we give up our rights to claim any damages against them. They also state in the ToS that there sole monetary responsibility will be $100.00 dollars. And that is ONLY if someone can claim they were negligent in some way.
Personally, I am satisfied that they are giving us 30 days of free subscription plus 1 day for every day the server is down. They are also offering ID Theft Protection AT THEIR COST, which per the ToS they are in no way obligated to do. This seems to me to be very satisfactory, considering they don't HAVE to do anything for us. So for those of you stating they do not value you as a customer, or that they are not providing "Good Customer Service", get real. They didn't have to give away anything. Be happy you get anything at all for your inconvenience, since they really are under NO OBLIGATION to provide you with anything.

Actually any point in a contract that involves telling them they are not responsible to make a reasonable effort to keep cc data safe is invalid. There are limits to what you can do in a contract and that is one of them.
Free Items?

For you morons making demands for free in game items, or other things that you want to compensate you for your boredom, get a life. Sony is under no contract to reward you for the game not being available. Everyone agrees every time they play that the game may not be available at all times. It's part of the Terms of Service agreement you click on where you state I Accept before you are even allowed to enter your information.

Quote:
We are not liable for any delay or failure to perform resulting from any causes beyond our reasonable control. Further, we cannot and do not promise or ensure that you will be able to access your Account whenever you want, and there may be extended periods of time when you cannot access your Account.

That same User Agreement also states they are not liable for any loss of your personal information due to some unforeseen act.

Quote:
12. We cannot ensure that your private communications and other personally identifiable information will not be disclosed to third parties. For example, we may be forced to disclose information to the government or third parties under certain circumstances, or third parties may unlawfully intercept or access transmissions or private communications. Additionally, we can (and you authorize us to) disclose any information about you to private entities, law enforcement or other government officials as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate to investigate or resolve possible problems or inquiries. You agree that we may communicate with you via telephone, email and any similar technology for any purpose relating to the Game, the Software and any services or software which may in the future be provided by us or on our behalf. You expressly permit SOE to upload CPU, operating system, video card, sound card and memory information from your computer to analyze and optimize your Game experience, improve and maintain the Game and/or provide you with customer service. Furthermore, if you request any technical support, you consent to our remote accessing and review of the computer you load the Software onto for purposes of support and debugging. You may choose to visit www.everquestlive.com or www.station.sony.com, SOE's web sites ("The Station") if such web sites offer services such as an EverQuest game themed chat room or other services of interest to you. You are subject to the terms and conditions, privacy customs and policies of SOE while on such web sites and in connection with use of your Account and the Game, which terms and conditions, policies and customs are incorporated herein by this reference. Since we do not control other web sites and/or privacy policies of third parties, different rules may apply to their use or disclosure of the personal information you disclose to others. Solely for the purpose of patching and updating the Game, you hereby grant us permission to (i) upload Game file information from the Game directory and (ii) download Game files to you. You acknowledge and agree that we may transfer Game and your Account information (including your personally identifiable information and personal data) to the United States or other countries or may share such information with our licensees and agents in connection with the Game.

So all in all, your claims and demands for reimbursement will most likely fall on deaf ears, since if you had any sense at all, you would have read, or had someone explain all of this to you before you clicked on that I Agree button on the login screen of your favorite SOE game. I believe there is a similiar I agree screen for Playstation, but since I don't own a PSN, I can't say for sure. Speaking from personal experience in working for a company that had a service agreement similiar to SOEs, I can assure you that you have no legal standing to demand anything, since by agreeing to that service agreement you gave away all those rights and privileges you are assuming you have. So quit demanding that SOE owes you something for your inconvenience. They don't.
I also think this should and most likely will apply to any of the Class Action suits that are being instigated by the lawyers who are just after more money. These suits are not going to help anyone BUT the lawyers, and the crooks behind the hack that was perpetuated by them. The customers of SOE, read US, will not benefit from these lawsuits, and will most likely be hurt by them, since Sony and all its divisions will have to either increase revenue to pay for them, in essence, increase our monthly fee for playing, or it will bankrupt them, removing our abilty to play the games we love and miss.

In your first quote, you have overlooked the words "reasonable control".

In your second quote, do you actually believe the EULA indemnifies Sony? If so, I have a bridge for sale, cheap.

Thirdly, while wild estimates of the financial damages which Sony may sustain abound, most informed economists put the damages around the $50.000,000 range.

Fourth, your opinion of lawyers and class actions is duly noted...as an opinion absent many facts.

I can assure you that IF Sony is negligent in its operation and exposed or potentially exposed sensitive client information, they are in a world of legal hurt.

In that sense they will be COMPELLED if necessary to provide compensation. Its not the banks fault if they get robbed. It becomes their fault if they dont follow common procedures to protect the assets given to them to custody by their clients.

If it is true that Sony was using outdated versions of Apache Webserver and if it is also true that they had been told that the tools they were using had KNOWN vulnerabilities than Sony was/is negligent.

I agree i stopped playing Back around 2002 and just started up again about a month ago with a fresh account.I was really worried about going through the pain of getting back to LVL 60. I could not believe how much easier it is to level now i spend most my time running the kids around and am still at level 49 in a month. I know my wife hopes SOE is up soon she is sick of me watching the Yankees games every night.

Im thinking anyone who is asking for extra experience or free stuff must not have played eq back in the day. It is so much easier to lvl and/or get stuff these days its a joke. but an even bigger joke is expecting sony to make it even easier. please. dont worry, nobody else is lvling so you're not getting behind. and once servers are back up, u can go back to buying your taskadds, looting your rots and giving a big slap in the face to us hardened vets.

Guess you don't play the "free" version of EQ2. You may have it...but if you want to equip it, SoE requires payment in Station Cash. Free EQ2 is such a misnomer.

In my opinion and it seems to be an opinion shared by many other games just aren't up to snuff comparatively. You have a very good point less players means more loot.

Thankyou for the number, but that was the number I tried and they say they are unable to perform such requests. I am just getting tired of getting the shaft just because I do not play everyday. I pay the same amount as somebody on everyday so why should I get treated like 2nd class garbage. I couldn't care less about the 30 free days, especially when I will probally only be able to be online for maybe 5 of those days. In fact, prior to this, I was gone for 2 weeks and just went on to log on yesterday to find all of this going on. You can think about me however you want, I really do not care. But thankyou again for at least giving me the number.

PSN and Qriocity apparently not planned to be operational until 31May.

One could safely presume that a similar date for SoE would be likely.

Yeah i agree with alot of folk's here on how insane some of the demands are.Hell i'll go the other way and say to SOE that i will be happy with the added days (not the free 30 days) and 1 mount of my choice (since i'm too cheap to buy 1 in game) is more than plenty for me.
If i want free/more time i will gladly pay for it.But i admit my patience is wearing thin as well only because i know how Sony is when it comes to dealing with their customer's sadly.

as i dont care at all about a free month and extra days, 14$ a month is honestly nothing to me.

what i would love to see is exp pots, 10-24x exp, somewhere in that range. and you get 2 for every day its down.

im grinding out aa's and levels right now, mainly focusing on aa, and was getting about 100aa a day prior to servers going down.

yea free days, they are nice, but what i would rather see is a way for me to make up lost time. everyone gets the same thing and i think we could all be happy.

i want to state this again, I DO NOT WANT FREE TIME TO PLAY EVERQUEST, I WOULD RATHER HAVE ACCELERATED LEVELING FOR THE DAYS ITS DOWN, TO EMULATE FULL DAYS

what i want is an alturnative to free month and so far 7 extra days.

Is this a local outage ony affecting you or your city? NO.
Is the whole game world continuing on and passing you by? NO.

The whole game is down....worldwide.
Which means:
No one is leveling
No one is grinding AA's
No one is questing
No one is tradeskilling
No one is raiding
No one is chatting with friends in game.

Why the ##@@$% do you need accelerated leveling? OR anything other than free days?

WTF are you talking about?!? What? Is there a time limit?
Were you on a schedule? Do you have little notes written on the calendar of the progress your toon must have? Do you have a date?
Are you creating a X-level/AA/gear sale-a-toon and the ship date is getting close?
Where did you lose anything?
The SOE servers stopwatch stopped at 19 seconds...when the servers kick on again, it will start at 20 seconds.
There is NO lost time!
You didn't miss out on anything...just keep grinding those 100 AA a day. Nothing has changed.

in previous posts, i try to make this once a topic on the down time, i mentioned i know at least 3 people dieing in real life that chose to live out the rest of their lives online. free days and more time doesn't effect them at all.

i mention the 100aa's because thats what i was grinding a day.

i believe its been down 7 days now. i would be around 1050 aa, and possibly a level or two by now if i was playing normally.

like i said, i know enough people who the extra time means f-----g nothing to them, however a way to make up for lost time, would help them immensely. because for every day the servers are down, you have to play twice as hard to make up for it.

you do understand that for most people, extra time isn't going to make us say o yea, thats why im still playing. for most of us, the ones that are more addicted than others, would rather see something where we can level faster, and get to where we want to be faster, and making up for lost days, ESPECIALLY because around here, school let out for spring break just as the servers had to come down, im not in school but i can be damn sure that some people had 12-16 hour marathons planed now that they had no homework or anything else to do.

than compound that soe isn't the best financially speaking, and all i would want is exp pots to make up days, instead of free time, its better for them too.

basically all im asking is emulated exp, hell, i would probably even settle for double exp time, 1 day for ever day the servers are down. for me this would solve the catch up problem, but not everyone has a scheduled as flexible as mine, or as much time left as me.

try thinking of more people than yourself when you make a comment like that i even specifically say I DON'T WANT FREE TIME AND POTS, you didn't say anything but i'm getting the point across to anyone who didn't read it before.

Sorry to hear that 3 people you knew died, and their last wishes were to die playing EQ. If you're in a similar situation...I'm also sorry.

...BUT, since the game IS down and there is nothing the common person can do...I suggest if you only have a short amount of time left in your life, if you are able to walk, get off yer *** and goto the front door - open it - and step outside. There is more to life than an online game.

When's the last time you saw blue sky? watched the clouds pass by? Talked to RL family and friends? Simple things that make life wonderous and worth living!!! Try that. It may surprise you; it may even curb your addiction to EQ for a while.

Everyone one that plays EQ / EQ2 and any other SOE online game is probably is the same boat as you are at the moment: having massive withdrawls to subtle twinges of missing the game. Find something else to occupy your time...another game, work on a project you've been putting off for months - years, talk to people around you, read a book, watch a movie...whatever you used to do before you were all-consumed by a game.

If / when SOE comes back up, all these posts will slowly disappear, and life will resume as it had. If it doesn't, life WILL go on in one way or another...!

LOL this is the goofiest post yet on this forum. Three people dying and living out the remainder of their lives on EQ? And because of this herd of extiquishing friends you keep company with, you and others should be given a whole ton of free in-game XPs. Are you out of your damn mind?

Hey, I heard there is a retirement home nearby... maybe we can all just give them a bunch of money since they've decided to spent their final days shopping! Or perhaps we can find a cancer ward comprised of folks that really want my new convertible! Hell, maybe we should all just get a free new car because of them!

I cannot make this clear enough... NO ONE should get free XPs or AAs or anything at all in game for this. Stop your whining and earn it like everyone else!

And if you are earning 100AAs per day, you should take some time out of your busy EQ schedual and go get another job so you can buy convertibles for some dying orphans in Afganistan >8\

And for those of you living out your final days as a quadrapelegic in your computer gaming chair... stop whining and enjoy levelling up like the rest of us >XO
rather than get free time in eq...

I'm sure that you neither know or believe this, but there was a time :::gasp:::: when there was no internet and no video games and kids actually managed to find things to do when they were not in school. Ask mommy and daddy. Maybe it's time to get a real world life.

All I have to say is how amazing is that a group of hackers can make a billionaire company to stop resume services for almost a month. One more time the drama about how secure is the internet for futures companies to offer services, or even more if this kind of illegal activity can be one of the reason why government should start controlling the internet service. I hope there isn't a hack attack every month from now on or sony will be gone lol.

Originally, it was controlled by the U.S. Government. The Department of Defense specifically. They created it in the late 60's and operated it as ARPANET. Starting in the mid to late 70's ARPANET split off the purely military traffic to MILNET. ARPANET then started a cycle of merging/absorbing/being absorbed by other networks and underwent various named changes. Control passed though various government agencies and eventually was handed off to non-government entities. MILNET remained under DoD control.

The internet is now international and civilian controlled. Which government would you suggest control it and how would you suggest they gain (or regain) control of it.

I think it is funny. The one thing that everyone seems to forget is that at the basis of any corporation is people! People make mistakes, some people are malicious and take advantage of these mistakes. All it takes is one person on a system that has proper credentials to click on the wrong thing or even visit the wrong site. The new way they are planting trojans on computers is by purchasing ads on popular web sites. Then they load a totally non-chalant program on the ad-space. The virus programs do not detect this as a virus because it isn't one. Then they are smart enough to wait a certain amount of time before the program changes security settings on the system, once that is done it is pretty much game over. I can bet you right now that 80% of the people posting right now, have the same stuff happening on their systems. The only ones that won't are the ones who know how to hack.

Something to think about...

LOL sorry but on all accounts, I'm right. As evidences by the information currently available for this current crisis , and any number of past crisis.

To the extent of " call soandso for X problem" yes. This is unprecedented in its magnitude.

Since your so knowledgeable , can you link me the exact plans NASA had for Challenger blowing up and the estimated budgets , plan of actions , contracts in place , the bidwars record for said contracts , both before and after the explosion?

How about the Twin towers? you got links for the plans they made for an airliner running into them?

How about the budgeting for increasing NATIONALLY airport security beforehand?

How about the pre existing cost estimates , contracts , and budgeting plan for crashing the NY stock exchange?

You happen to have Exxon's plan for environmental cleanup beforehand and their exact numbers?

I didn't say that some co. don't cut costs. And I also didn't say that they didn't get bitten either. But they do plan for the worst cases. And just because they called in additional analysts doesn't mean that it wasn't in the budget to do so. Any smart business would have additional resources available as needed. And just because a co. may cut costs doesn't mean that they got bitten for that reason. And who knows how much SOE has grossed from us for over 10 yrs. in this marketed field and all fields related to it. It doesn't matter. It seems to me that others are saying that SOE doesn't know what they are doing. And as I said: They didn't get this far from running a hap hazard co. No computer system is bullet proof and I don't care how much the co. grosses. It all depends on who the hackers decide to target.

I want to see the people responsible for this bent firmly over.

This has impacted millions of people and is looking to be costing billions of dollars.

It is putting peoples livelihoods at stake, at a time when no-one can afford to be out of a job.

It is also setting a sinister and dangerous precedent whereby any raging nerd with the skills and a grudge can bring massive corporations to their metaphorical knees.

This crime should be treated as what it is: an act of terrorism of great seriousness and upon conviction, sentenced as such.

Personally, I would like to see the perpetrators go to jail for 20 years, 15 year non parole period, with a special 'no access to IT of any kind' clause on the ruling.

Harsh, yes, but the example and deterrent needs to be set.

Otherwise, it is no great stretch of fancy to envisage a society held hostage to the whims of these kind of criminals.

Stands and claps.....VERY well stated and totally agree..:)

I stated the other day that the frustration so many players feel are misdirected......THE hackers are the culprit not Sony.

Why aren't more upset with them (The hackers)? It completely amazes me that only a few of us are wanting the hackers to be punished....Most seem to want Sony to *reimburse* us for what another group did.

Bottom line (imho) is Sony owes us nothing except to prosecute the hackers to the fullest extent of the law as an example to others who feel they can do what they wish to others without any consequences to themselves.

Watched a show (No clue what channel etc or even the name of the show) where it showed how easy it is for hackers to get a debit/credit card number. I didn't ujnderstand it (I am soo computer illiterate) all but all they did was ride by the company they wanted to hack using a computer and some software with an antenae and hack in to getting names, numbers, etc and then they made their own cards and withdrew millions. Happenened in 2005 but did not get caught til 2008 or therein. Main guy was actually a hacker who was also helping the government...go figure eh?

I hope some day these and other hackers are prosecuted and sent to prison.....not with just a slap on the hand-Example-Some hackers (for punishment) are told not to ever use a computer again.....I chuckle at that because tell me one that has followed that?

Anyhow, gone on long enough..:)

I actually just miss my guildies. I've only been back for a couple of months so I only talk to my guildies on Antonia Bayle when I'm on. It would be awesome to have a website where you can get in touch with your guildmates and talk about what's going on. Our website is on the Everquest guilds sites so that is down as well.

I've been playing Everquest for about 5 years now. I left about a year ago and just came back so this indeed sucks lol. I just read that Sony's serives will be offline for a month. I hope that is just a rumor. I don't believe all what I read because people get so frantic and make things up lol. It's nice that Zam has been letting us know what's going on.

Thanks for letting me rant a little :P

I miss my guild mates as well. Thankfully we do have a website for my guild that's not part of SOE. So we have been able to get some of our guild members together in other games and of course using the shout box on the guild website. We also set up vent for everyone so we can still chat while playing whatever we are all playing.

I've been spending lots of time in Ryzom since it's free and a really good Free to play at that. Lots of people there and seems to be mostly adult because of how complex some of it can be. It's older but fun. It's NOT EQ2 but at least it's something to do that's fun and I can play it for as long as I like.

So far none of my guild members plan on leaving EQ when it's back up, I think everyone for the most just misses the game and the fun we all have together.

Actually used to be a system that allowed you to do just that. I believe it was part of the Station Launcher. I say BELIEVE because I really don't remember for sure. It was however, part of the SOE Server network, so even if it does still exist, you wouldn't have access to it because the servers are all down. I too miss my friends, but since all the info I have for them is stored on Sonys Servers, it does me no good to wish for it.
As for you morons making demands for free in game items, or other things that you want to compensate you for your boredom, get a life. Sony is under no contract to reward you for the game not being available. Everyone agrees every time they play that the game may not be available at all times. It's part of the Terms of Service agreement you click on where you state I Accept before you are even allowed to enter you information.

They don't.

It isn't just this forum. This forum is a small look at the larger societal picture. Anytime the sharks or lazy asses smell blood in the water, they see $$. It isn't in their best interest to be shut down longer than absolutely necessary. The longer they are shut down, the more likely people WILL find other things to do, or at least those with a life in the real world will. And it will be less likely that they will return. And if the chronic complainers leave for good as they keep promising us they will, it will be a better place to be for those that stay or do come back. The problem is, the chronic complainers have no life so they won't really leave because they don't have any place to go.

realistically I have no idea what I want from it, I am not even sure I care about the free month or 1 day for every day it is down.

What I think I want most of all is something that is going to satisfy me that their system is secure enough for me to want to trust them with personal information again.

I was sitting around with friends last night talking about this and the biggest point of agreement was that no one was really that enthusiastic about putting the CC information back into system even though everyone was looking forward to playing the game again.

I think people shouting abou being billed are probably looking at payment taken before the 2nd.

I have not been billed on my monthly account yet this month (would normally hit around the 4th), I also checked with my card company to see if they had declined the payment. They have not, so I can only say I have not been billed.

I also consider it highly unlikely that even SOE would continue billing from a non-secure system for services that cannot be accessed!

So until somebody actually confirms they have been billed since 2nd May I will continue to assume SOE have suspended billing

Edit: just phoned to check, and no, billing is suspended... so those seeing billings are on the cusp of a few days before ..
