Act I: Garlaige Citadel (S)

Diordinne: What? A group of child knights, you say?

Diordinne: Hmmm... I know not of the ones you seek, but there are indeed squires, refugees, and even children who have taken residence within this stronghold since the outbreak of the war.

Diordinne: Now, have you some manner of documentation identifying you as the guardian of these children?

Vailanice: Oh? We've met previously, have we not?

Vailanice: Yes, I remember now -- you are PLAYERNAME.

Diordinne: I bet your pardon, Sir Vailanice. Is this person, too, a member of your extended family?

Vailanice: Well... in a sense, yes.

Vailanice: You must excuse my intrusion the other day. If you'll allow me to properly introduce myself, I am Vailanice of the Knights of the Iron Ram. I've the honor of leadign a modest number of knights in the regiment.

Vailanice: This would be our first time trading words in earnest, is it not? Truth be told, I've already been privileged with the knowledge of your many exploits.

Vailanice: Courtesy of these young knights, here.

Rahal: PLAYERNAME!

Rahal: How very unlike you to arrive last of all.

Rahal: But, as captain, I appreciate your being here just the same.

Rahal: You'll be pleased to hear that we, the Knights of teh Swiftwing Griffin, have been entrusted with a role of great import: the defense of the northeastern quadrant of the Garlaige Citadel!

Vailanice: A rather intriguing development... How does cleaning duty suddenly become defense, pray tell?

Cyranuce: Such minor details matter not. Any Orcish force that has the gall to invade the citadel will have to answer to the Swiftwing Griffins!

Machegue: Yeah!

Vailanice: Hahaha, spoken like a true knight. The visual integrity of the citadel's northeast is in your hands, fearless soldiers.

Diordinne: Sir Vailanice, if I could be forgiven for my boldness...

Diordinne: Are there not more suitable playgrounds than here for the children?

Vailanice: Your concern is appreciated, Diordinne, but a little leeway would be in order, I should think. After all, thanks to their tireless effort, the provisions storehouse is now free of rats and other undesirables.

Diordinne: That, I deny not, but...

A soldier runs into the room.

Thianond: ... S-Sir Vailanice! We have an emergency! Th-the enemy... !

Vailanice: Calm down, man. Tell me what's happened.

Thianond: Sir! We're under attack! All kitchen personnel have fallen victim --

Rahal: !?

Vailanice: Kitchen personnel, you say? But, what business have they to wander without the citadel?

Thianond: Sir, all were confirmed to have perished in the kitchen where they stood!

Vailanice: The kitchen? Why, that's at the heart of the northeastern quadrant currently placed on high alert with no less than doubled guards!

Diordinne: Could this be the handiwork of the Beastman Confederate elite?

Thianond: On the contrary, sir, eyewitness accounts strongly suggest the involvement of Goblins.

Vailanice: Goblins... Bounty hunters, I'm willing to wager. We must get to the bottom of this.

Vailanice: Thianond, pray lead the way.

Vailanice: Diordinne, you are to relay the news of this disturbing development to all commanding officers and their regiments.

Diordinne: At once, sir. And... I mean not to unnerve you, sir, but I sense an ill foreboding. Please take all care.

Vailanice: Thank you, Diordinne. You also.

Machegue: Cyra... nuce. The northeastern quadrant -- is it not in the jurisdiction of the Swiftwing Griffins?

Cyranuce: Indeed it is... What shall we do, Captain Rahal?

Rahal: When we were mistakenly thrown into the dungeon upon our arrival here, Chef Rouellouge showed kindness by providing us with scrumptious sausages. We must go to his aid!

Machegue: Let's make haste and find Sir Vailanice!

Rahal: Agreed. PLAYERNAME, you must be tired from your journey, but I fear there isn't yet time for rest. Come with us.

Deep within the citadel...

Cyranuce: ... Uwaaah!

Machegue: (Shhh, Cyra. Keep it down!)

Cyranuce: (Oh, it's just you, PLAYERNAME... Don't startle me like that.)

Cyranuce: (Captain, what's the situation?)

Rahal: (Someone's collapsed on the floor...)

Rahal: Thianond!?

Dead San d'Orian soldiers are everywhere.

Rahal: He's... dead.

Cyranuce: Wh-what? No...

Rahal: Quiet... someone approaches.

Vailanice:

Vailanice: Confound it! Whence is that accursed green smoke...

Rahal: Sir Vailanice!?

Vailanice: Hm? Children, why are you here?

Vailanice: ...

Cyranuce: What's wrong?

Vailanice: Approach me not!

Vailanice: This area is fraught with danger! Return to the upper level, now!

Rahal: B-but, what about you?

The corridor fills with green smoke, and goblins come around the corner.

Vailanice: You needn't be concerned with me -- I will join you momentarily. Now, leave! This is a direct order from your superior officer!

You and the Young Griffons return to the upper level room.

Diordinne: Hmph... To where have all of you been traipsing?

Diordinne: Sir Vailanice would give me a right royal hiding if misfortune were to befall one of his "relatives." Have you no consideration?

Diordinne: Hm? Is... something amiss?

Vailanice: The citadel is under attack! The enemy uses poisonous gas. Thianond... he has been slain.

Vailanice: Ugh...

Diordinne: THe GOddess have mercy... Should the gas find its way into one's lungs...

Diordinne: Sir, we have a small supply of marshmallow-infused medicine to treat your condition. Allow me to assist.

Vailanice: I am fine. There are still those below that are in need of aid, however. They can yet be saved if we make haste.

Vailanice: Furthermore, I have a suspicion that requires ascertaining.

Diordinne: Suspicion, sir?

Vailanice: Recall you the enemy siege engine that was found abandoned at the meriphataud Mountains?

Diordinne: Aaah, yes -- the rather sizeable contraptionr eportedly discovered by a mercenary named Mihke... or thereabouts.

Diordinne: It was taken to the number eight shelter and is awaiting inspection. What of it, sir?

Vailanice: That is the object of my suspicion. It is my wish to inspect it without delay.

Diordinne: But, sir, you can barely stand. I will go in your stead, if you will but give me the order.

Vailanice: No. More lives needn't be placed in harm's way. Besides, I require your presence here to inform the others of the situation.

Rahal: Sir Vailanice, let us accompany you!

Vailanice: Captain Rahal, Swiftwing Griffins. Grateful am I for your selfless offer.

Vailanice: Here, however, is where your services are most direly needed.

Vailanice: Diordinne is one of my most capable, but this situation may prove to be beyond even one of his caliber. Can I rely upon you all to assist him in any and every way possible?

Cyranuce: Yes, sir!

Rahal: Un-understood...

Vailanice: I leave them in your charge, Diordinne.

Vailanice: I'm depending on you!

Cyranuce: Please be careful, Sir Vailanice!

Vailanice: Thank you. And you also!

Diordinne: Now then, my miniature knights -- here is your assignment:

Diordinne: You are to head to the storeroom on the upper level and bring back all the dried marshmallows your scrawny little arms can carry. Understood?

Machegue: Hmph, you always act all high-and-mighty when Sir Vailanice isn't here!

Machegue: But, we, the Knights of the Swiftwing Griffin, will not stand for it! Right, Captain?

Cyranuce: Um... Captain? Hey, where did he go?

Diordinne: Curses! That little rascal's sneaked off and followed Sir Vailanice!

Diordinne: PLAYERNAME, is it not? You must go and retrieve the brash young fool this instant.

Diordinne: If something unsavory were to happen as a result, I would know not what to say to Sir Vailanice.

Cyranuce: We'll come with you, PLAYERNAME!

Diordinne: While I truly appreciate -- and I do mean it -- your generous offer to run into the thick of danger, I would be even more delighted if you were to go and fetch the dried marshmallows from the storeroom.

Machegue: Darn it!

The Young Griffons leave.

Diordinne: PLAYERNAME. This here is the number eight shelter key.

Diordinne: It is accessible from H-9 on your map. Make haste and you may yet be able to catch up to the rascal.

Diordinne: And please, watch out for Sir Vailanice also. While he lacks not for intelligence nor courage, his selflessness often blinds him to certain details.

Scene II: Ghoyu's Reverie

You find Vailanice crouched near an Orcish warmachine.

Vailanice: Over here!

Vailanice: PLAYERNAME? But... how is it possible?

Vailanice: Never mind, that is not of great import now. I've discovered a rope of Goblin construction hanging from a ventilation shaft in the ceiling here.

Vailanice: It is through there that the intruders most likely gained entry. Or perhaps... engineered their escape?

Vailanice: Hm? That sound...

Vailanice: It's coming from within the Orcish warmachine.

The door on the orcish warmachine opens, and a goblin and orcs climb out.

Vailanice: By the Goddess... Orcs!

Vailanice: They were concealing themselves inside there all this time? Have our engineers knotholes for eyes!?

Vailanice: They're speaking in the Orcish tongue...

Vailanice: Strategy... poisonous gas...

???: Fools! You're all very well aware of our army's supplies shortage...

???: Yet you go against my specific instructions and apply the gas to areas where provisions are stored!

Masked Goblin: But, sir, venerable sir. Eliminating enemy supplies fundamental siege strategy, sir.

Zogbog: Hmph! Lecture me on military strategy, will you!? You and your lik weren't meant to...

Zogbog: Ugh!

Zogbog: Why, you worthless piece of junk! Urgh!

Masked Goblin: Master Zogbog, sir. This siege engine poor quality made from scrap parts, sir. You please handle with care, sir.

Zogbog: Grrr! Tell me something I don't know!

Vailanice: Zogbog? I recognize that name.

Vailanice: Ah, yes, I recall hearing of him from a captive. He's the Orc who has swiftly risen to prominence as a military tactician in the service of Doggvdegg, the infamous leader of the Bloodwing Horde.

Zogbog: I'll not tolerate any further blunders! Understood?

Masked Goblin: Worry not, sir. Underlings now gone to positions with fumigation device, sir.

Zogbog: Only if accomplished without external aid will this operation garner us acclaim. Keep that drilled into your thick skulls!

Vailanice: They intend to release the poisonous gas again...

Vailanice: The commander must be informed of this insidious plot without delay.

Rahal: Sir Vailanice! Where've you gone!?

Vailanice: R-Rahal!? Of all the ill-timed entrances....

Zogbog: (...Chazgek!) We've been discovered!

Rahal: Huh!? Wh-what are Orcs doing here!?

Zogbog: (Geshdek!)

Rahal: P-prepare yourselves, Orcs! Your opponent is Captain Rahal of the Swiftwing Griffins!

Vailanice: Rahal!

Rahal: Sir Vailanice!

Rahal: And PLAYERNAME!

Zogbog: (Veggrok...!) He wasn't alone!

Zogbog: Hmmm... there's something eerily familiar about that one. But, it couldn't possibly be...

Zogbog: ... You again!?

Zogbog: It seems you've made an annoying habit of foiling my plans...

Zogbog: But, not today... and not ever again!

Zogbog: Orcs! Make sure your gas masks are securely fastened!

Zogbog: Now, go and tear them all apart limb from limb!

Zogbog climbs inside the warmachine, which begins spewing the noxious gas.

Zogbog: Gahahaha! This poisonous gas is a special recipe I learned directly from the Moblins. It's quite a rare treat, so be sure to waste not even a single whiff!

Vailanice: ...

Vailanice: Rahal.

Vailanice: PLAYERNAME and I will keep the enemy at bay.

Vailanice: I need you to deliver word to Diordinne and have him organize search parties to ferret out the Goblin mercenaries.

Rahal: B-but, a knight turns not his back from battle! Let me stay and fight beside the two of you!

Vailanice: Rahal! Tell me -- what is the duty of a knight?

Rahal: Wh-what!? Um, uh... A knight must, above all else, value honor and courage... a-and when called upon, must take to battle with sword and spear--

Vailanice: Wrong!

Vailanice: Listen to me, Rahal. The duty of a knight... is being the shield that protects those who cannot defend themselves.

Vailanice: Unless the enemy's plot is made known, countless more innocent lives will be lost.

Rahal: ...

Vailanice: Now, go!

Rahal: Sir Vailanice. PLAYERNAME.

Rahal: Please be safe!

Rahal runs away.

Vailanice: ...

Vailanice: Forvie me, PLAYERNAME. I wished not for you to be involved in this fight.

Vailanice: I must confess, I barely have the strength remaining to stay standing.

Vailanice: I should at least, however, be able to hold the attention of the Orcs.

Vailanice: You must find an opening and destroy the siege engine. It must not be allowed to spread its cloud of death any further.

Vailanice: I owe you a debt of gratitude. Young Rahal and the Swiftwing Griffins have an irreplaceable ally in you, PLAYERNAME.

Vailanice: Now, with me!

Scene III: Ghoyu's Reverie

You defeat the orcs and the warmachine.

Vailanice: ...

Vailanice: A magnificent display, PLAYERNAME!

Other orcs run in and surround you and Vailanice.

Vailanice: But... it seems we've reached the end of the road.

Vailanice: It has been an honor to fight alongside you... PLAYERNAME.

Rahal: Sir Vailanice!

Vailanice: !?

Vailanice: R-Rahal, why have you returned?

Vailanice: And... the rest of you...

???: Vailanice. A great many things have happened in my absence, it seems.

Vailanice: Captain Rongelouts!

Rongelouts N Distaud: At ease, soldier.

Rongelouts N Distaud: Foul beastmen. For your craven usage of poisonous gas, you shall receive no quarter from me. Now, brace yourselves, for today, justice will be dealt in tempered steel! Yaarrgh!!!

An orc moves in on Vailanice, who is still weak... the Young Griffon, Cyranuce, jumps on the orc's back, pulling the orc's head back.

Cyranuce: Captain! Now!

Rahal rushes forward, stabbing the orc through the heart, killing it.

Zogbog: ...

Zogbog: Ack! Today is supposed to be the glorious day I go down in history as the conqueror of the Garlaige Citadel!

Zogbog: Hmph, looks like it's back to the drawing board... Enjoy your victory while you can, filthy Elvaan, for it will be short-lived!

Zogbog warps away, and the soldiers and Young Griffins celebrate.

Vailanice: ...

Vailanice collapses.

Rahal: Sir Vailanice!

Rahal: Sir Vailanice! Hold on, please!

Rahal: Th-this is all my fault... if only I hadn't been so reckless.... Please, forgive me...

Vailanice: Rahal... You are the spitting image of myself in my younger days...

Rahal: What? Me...?

Vailanice: When I was but a young squire, my sole desire was to accomplish great feats and prove my worth.

Vailanice: But before long, I came to realize that I was only running around in circles, chasing after rainbows...

Rahal: Sir Vailanice....

Vailanice: No need for the long face, Rahal...

Vailanice: It is for the happiness and smiles of others that a knight fights. Therefore, it is only fitting that he, too departs with a smile on his face... and peace in his heart.

Vailanice: Ha ha ha...

Vailanice: That expression... is more... like it.

Vailanice slumps against the rock.

Rahal: Sir Vailanice?

Rahal: Noooooooo!

Back in the citadel...

Rahal: Captain Rongelouts, sir!

Rongelouts N Distaud: ...Captain?

Rongelouts N Distaud: You presume to address me as your captain? Admitting a squirming swarm of maggots into the Iron Rams is not something I recall doing.

Rahal: Maggots we may be...

Rahal: But... it is the aspiration of these maggots to one day become knights like Sir Vailanice!

Rahal: We will obey your every command! Please, Captain, grant us permission to join the Knights of the Iron Ram!

Rongelouts N Distaud: Heh... Bold words coming from a maggot.

Rongelouts N Distaud: Those words, at least, are reminiscent of Vailanice in his youth...

Rongelouts N Distaud: ... I shall hear the rest of them back at the capital.

Cyranuce: You did it, Captain!

Machegue: Cyra, we're finally going to become real knights!

Rahal: No. Best not raise your hopes, lest they be betrayed.

Rahal: I am without doubt, though, that today we've taken a substantial step towards reaching that goal.

Rahal: Now, first things first -- let us hurry home to San d'Oria.

Rahal: Castellan Rholont would not receive us kindly should we return any later than absolutely necessary.

Machegue: Hahaha! How could we ever forget about poor Castellan Rholont!

Scene IV: Southern San d'Oria (S)

Rholont: I bear a message from Captain Rahal:

Rholont: "The Knights of the Swiftwing Griffin are to convene at headquarters from sundown."

Scene V: Southern San d'Oria (S)

Rholont: Captain Rahal has informed me of what transpired at the Garlaige Citadel....

Rholont: ... And of Sir Vailanice's passing. The beastmen must be made to pay -- I myself shall strike back and exact revenge! Er... after I become a proper knight, that is.

Rholont: The War Council is about to commence. Please take your place.

Rahal: Listen up, everyone.

Rahal: It was as I had expected. We were not allowed to officially join the ranks of the Iron Rams.

Machegue: Awww...

Cyranuce: Curses! That captain's skull is more rigid than granite!

Rahal: However, permission has been granted for us to partake in all their drills, should we wish it.

Rholont: Iron Ram-style murderous military drills under the watchful, sadistic eye of Captain Rongelouts...

Rholont: Uhhhn... My stomach is churning at the mere thought of it...

Rahal: Hahahaha, my feelings exactly. All the same, this is a grand opportunity for us to demonstrate to Captain Rongelouts that we're much more than squirming maggots.

Bistillot: Captain. Was there... no mention of me?

Rahal: You needn't fret, Bistillot. You were specifically singled out and requested to assist with their research on the Orcish warmachine.

Bistillot: Research!? You... you jest not!? I shall do my utmost to earn glory and respect for the Swiftwing Griffin!

Rahal: And PLAYERNAME. I've brought something for you.

Rahal: It's from Captain Rongelouts himself.

Rahal: PLAYERNAME, I've been wanting to speak with you in private for some time now.

Rahal: Have you... ever been to Tavnazia?

Rahal: Or, even if you haven't, perhaps you've some knowledge of it?

Rahal: A-actually, never mind... You needn't tell me.

Rahal: I've much to talk about with Excenmille the next time he and I meet...

Rahal: And then I'll put things right between us...

Meanwhile, in Valkurm Dunes, Excenmille sits on his chocobo...

Alphonimile: What's the matter? Already beset with the homesickness?

Excenmille: It... it's nothing, sir.

Alphonimile: Need I remind you the consequence of not passing beyond these dunes by night's end? The beastmen have amassed a force of unprecedented scale. Should they arrive first and lay siege to Tavnazia before we can come to their aid, all would be lost.

Excenmille: ... Yes, sir. I beg your pardon, sir.

Alphonimile: Keep pace, soldier. We've much distance to cover yet.
