I used this earring today for the first time. Wow.. this has is definitely the best earring that I have. I was taking about 300 damage from Imp Aero 3 and Fire 3 spells in Caedarva Mire as a level 72 pld. With latent effect refresh from Parade Gorget and Sanction, Auto-Refresh, and this earring, I was getting about 10 mp back on those hits. This is without Red Mage refresh! With Red Mage refresh it would've been 13 mp back. So basically, I can confirm that it is indeed magic damage or physical damage taken that will get you that 3% to mp from this earring. I am extremely happy with this earring.
Assuming you are fighting enemies that hit over 34 damage, this earring is a pretty amazing piece of gear. It more or less let's you cure back 10% of the damage taken on average. While not exactly the same, its a mini-defending ring.
Drg75/Blu37. 5 mp is used to cure 3-4, (216-385 hp depending on gear) take 300 dmg, recover 9 mp, use 5 to recover the hp lost thats a 4 mp profit, mp for cocoon is easily recoverd. this is like.... perfect for dragoon in every way, atk, eva, hp. this is by far the best earing in the game for drg/mage. this and brutal earing just makes us obseenly strong. to have double attack as drg/mage and virtually limlitless mp, what more can we ask for? dragoons stop complaining about how people treat us, f' them and go solo more exp than you would get in a pt anyway. only down side to this earing, how hard it is to obtain O_o. well thats my 2 cents, GL getting this anyone who trys
This earring is hard to get? What you talking about willis?
He is not lying. Not only do you have to finish all of CoP and Zilart missions, but you have to defeat Bahamut & the Zilart Brothers (a lot stronger now) again. When it comes to these type of battles it is hard for a drg to find a party that will want them for this since they'd rather have MNK or RNG for 2hr as well. Unless DRG is not your only job than it'd be easier to find a party.
I am picking up this bad boy earring in 30 min which is midnight in japan meaning it's next day. I am a DRG at heart and I mean that by saying DRG is only job I have at 75 since I started this game several years ago. Now of course I'm raising other jobs.
But for DRG/Mage this think does rock.

What more can we ask for you say?
I'd have say Homam Armor! 12% haste! 127mp! 127hp! Fast Cast! 5% triple attack! 32 acc! I started doing Limbus recently so I'm looking forward to making this set!
I know that but read what i wrote, i said i finished that one and now need this one, I just dont know magnetic or this, like pld is my fav job but im starting to like my galka blm too.
To obtain this you must have both CoP and Zilart stories completly finished, including all ending cutscenes, the CoP Bahamut fight and the new BCNM "Apocalypse Nigh".
I've had this thing for about a month, its a pretty good earring for tanking monsters that hit hard. You wont get much use out of it in exp or ballista because you'll only get such a small amount of MP back from taking small damage.
I've found that the converting MP rounds down, kinda disappointing...if you take less than 33 damage, you wont get any MP back whatsoever, you have to take AT LEAST 33 damage to get MP back. All the damage adds up though, if you're tanking Hundred Fists or getting hit with 1000+ IV spells, you'll really see this earring shine, i havent ran out of MP since i got this earring as long as i have a RDM in pt, i can spam cure III/IV on everyone for extra hate.
It's also a great earring for NIN, you get +5 atk and +5 acc in the same slot, but you wont get the benefit of converting damage to MP.
If something is hitting for under 33 damage, as a Paladin at any rate, your natural Mp regenreation and hercules ring can more than cover the slack. Things that hit for that much damage usually get obliterated. I don't know much about dragoon, but watching them solo I'd say it's more or less the same.
You wont get much use out of it in exp or ballista because you'll only get such a small amount of MP back from taking small damage.
No use in exp? Pfft. We get hit for over 100 damage on things like birds in lufaise, golems in sky, demons in ulg. range. That means a 3 MP per hit, which would almost be like an additional refresh.
ALOT of people seem to have this baby on Lakshimi, It is the best earring for PLD but It can be very helpful to melees who use Rune weapons that drain mp per tick. When I first saw this I thought it took 3% of the physical damage and made it hurt 3% of your mp but It does not work that way. It generates 3% of the damage taken towards mp. 33 damage - 1 MP.
Got one of these things last week... i gotta say, pretty damn awesome...
The way the trait works is for every 100 dmg you take, you will regain 3mp. (it does not truly convert the dmg to mp, it just gives you an mp bonus for the dmg)
imo, this earring gets the most amount of use by a PLD, but is also ideal for any melee job as well as Ninja too
I beg to differ. DRG/mage does. A job that only needs 7mp to CureIII or IV... Not only that but the +atk and eva are killer. This is DRG/mage god... not even close to joking, we should make a shrine for it...
Indeed. This is goldy for DRG who also have the AF2 helm. provided the mob you are attacking is able to deal 33+ dmg per hit on you.
you'll need to get hit 8 times to gain 8 mp with a total damage that may vary from 264 to 520 with an average dmg equal to: 392
Using a cureI your wyrm will heal around 400 hp + 30 hp from the cure itself.
You see the picture: unless you are terribly unlucky getting hit for 60-65 dmg each time you will always recover any HP you lose and you'll be able to fight virtually forever!
Only problem here is against mobs that can oneshot, but that can be overcome adjusting the def.
Wyrm Armet is not an option though. For any other DRG this earring is just a nice stuff but won't make you Godly.
Self inflicted damage caused by Souleater will not convert itself to MP.
I performed a test with 1000 Needles in order to check if the damage was actually a total "conversion", but the DMG inflicted was still 1000 total instead of 970 (1000DMG - 3%). Damage is not "converted" but rather the MP is "generated" from damage values greater than 33DMG.
A round-down test performed with the earring shows that the > 33DMG must be performed in one attack and is not cumulative. Taking two hits for 17DMG (34DMG total) does not return 1MP. Being under the effects of poison, for instance, does not give a reduced effect refresh. I have not been able to test a DoT stack for greater than 33DMG yet.
The trait on Ethereal Earring "Converts 3% of damage taken to MP" is an awesome trait, but I was wondering exactly how it works. Suppose a monster hits someone for 300 points of damage, which of the following takes effect?
A.) Player gets hit for 300 points of damage and gains 9 MP.
or
B.) Player instead gets hit for 291 points of damage and gains 9 MP.
Thanks for your time! Just wondering the specifics of this awesome earring.
I use this earring on DRG/WHM all the time. When you get hit for 300 damage, you end up with a solid 9MP back while taking the full 300 points of damage.
Unfortunately, things that hit for less than 33HP don't give you fractional MP back, so that's a bit unfortunate.
For those wondering about the DRG angle: Combined with AF2 helm, AF+1 legs, and reasonable defensive gear, you can be HIGHLY effective soloing EM and T mobs at level 75.
Based on other gear that uses "Convert" in its description (e.g., "Converts 25 HP to MP"), it would mean that if the mob hits the player for 100 HP in damage, the player would suffer 97 HP and would gain 3 MP.
Why does a nin have to tank /blm to get any benefit from this? I sometimes static as /rdm with a rdm and smn... the only downside is that as nin I try my best to not take any damage and when I do /rdm ... nin not see much action from this prolly... someone got any radical ideas I haven't thought of yet... please post
Complete all Zilart missions Complete all CoP missions Beat the first Bahamut BC in Riverne Beat another, final BC in Empyreal Paradox (Apocalypse Nigh)
Then you'll have your pick of one of four earrings: This one, Magnetic, Static, or Hollow. You're only allowed to choose one, so choose wisely.
