Final Fantasy XIV Begins Billing in January

FFXIV is going pay to play starting in the new year

The oft-maligned Final Fantasy XIV, which was released over a year ago to a sea of controversy, has announced a series of payment plans which will come into effect January 6th, 2012. The game has seen a plethora of changes since Naoki Yoshida took the helm as the game's Director last December; and the hope is that the fixes, coupled with the eventual rebranding of the game as Final Fantasy XIV Version 2.0, will finally be enough to warrant a monthly subscription.

The game will cost $9.99 for a 30 day subscription, $26.97 for three months, and $47.94 for 180 days of play. There will also be a $3 charge for additional character slots (The basic subscription gives you access to one character slot). Additionally, the game will be offered at a discounted rate until the release of FFXIV 2.0.

Square Enix has been hard at work attempting to assuage the outcry from the playerbase over the problems with the game; and this is a neccesary move that was bound to happen, but nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what public opinion looks like come January 6th.
