I've been struggling with class selection as of late, in a stupid way it lead me to delete characters out right. I understand this is viewed as not the smoothiest move, but it is what it is. I was wondering if anyone can offer advice as to how to approach what class I end up doing. I thought tanking would be fun, started on GLAD, got to PLD then realized I just can't keep up with the pace of the game as far as keeping the hate...or I'm doing it wrong. I enjoy DD classes and have no interest in being a Healer. Any tips on how to better approach this process? I realize it seems stupid but I'd rather not keep deleting lol.

Don't be discouraged as a PLD. I failed multiple times but stuck with it. Feel free to check out the PLD forums of combos used for keeping hates and other strategies. I made so many mistakes playing through that I cringe when I look back at them. If you enjoy tanking, stick with it! XIV needs more tanks! And a plus side to tanking is low wait times in the DF which is great for not only grinding tomes later on, but also getting through story dungeons and instances necessary to move along in the game.

If you don't like PLD try WAR. If tanking still isn't your thing, narrow down whether you enjoy ranged DPS or melee. That should help you narrow down whether you want BRD, BLM, or SMN, or MNK and DRG at the other end of the spectrum. At level 10 in the story line, you'll be able to join the guilds and try out different guilds to see what you enjoy. Don't delete your character, because you may end up needed a job you didn't enjoy leveling for subs down the road.

As a tank, you'll gain instant queues and access to content much faster than other classes. You'll often be completing your quests at the level they come available, where damage dealing classes tend to access them a lvl or two higher. As a result, it can be difficult to keep hate while leveling because of the level disparity. You'll find that running dungeons closer to the end of their level spectrum will make threat holding much easier. This will become even more true in 2.1 as you queue for dungeons and people are filling your slots via the random feature. You'll end up at the minimum level tanking with 3 people level synced to the highest that dungeon allows.

Bottom line, hang in there, if you enjoy the tank playstyle, the wait will be worth it as you'll have queue access to content much faster than damage dealing classes.

Don't give up the tank job unless you know you are just outright bad and have no desire to correct yourself. Its not hard you just half to practice. It also helps to have someone show you a few things. Ask a LS/FC mate. I am a lvl 50WAR and have tanked a lot of dungeons and fights and am an above average tank. I got together with a FC mate last night and learned a few tricks that will make me that much better.

Stick with it. Tanks are always going to be needed and I find having a job that is desired, Tank/Healer, the game is a little more enjoyable because you are being relied upon. That's just me though.

Good luck, whatever you do. :)

There are a lot of good Youtube videos out there demonstrating the basics of tanking, effective use of abilities and some suggestions on macros and when to fire them off. This one is pretty decent:

Also, the most important point...

You keep talking about Deleting, but this is a Final Fantasy game. You can change classes/jobs as many times as you want and basicly play everything on a single character. You're not locked into one single class like on WoW.

Just get everything up to level 15. And see what you enjoyed from there on.

Another thought if you enjoy tanking, being the hero, having dps love you because you ended thier 40 min queue wait...you will come to realize that tanking is the easiest job when it comes to boss mechanics. As long as you have learned to hold emnity, the rest of your job simply becomes standing in place and occasionally side stepping an aoe field. The rest of the party, on the other hand, have a much more demanding role on boss fights. You'll see them constantly running and scampering around to dodge attacks not tied to the aggro table. They have a much harder time than the tank.

Where the tank job gets interesting is all the fighting up to the boss. During those fights the consentration switches to the tank. He/she has to be more conscious of enmity control, mob positioning in tight quarters, kill order, and making sure the other members are aware of their surroundings. To me, the more exciting battles are moving through the dungeon rather than the bosses.

If you want to tank I suggest Pld. You have much more control how you work enmity amongst the mobs, as well as great mitigation skills to suit any encounter.
