Just learned a new trick for SMNFollow

#1 Oct 17 2013 at 12:10 PM Rating: Default
SMN can off tank! I was in AK, with a tank and heals from my FC, and a DF DRG. The drg absoultely sucked for being in DL with garuda weapon (his name was Jump Kick btw), he kept dying to the first bosses aoe's, so much so we wiped sev eral times with him complaining about the adds. So I swittched to titan and off tanked the adds while he pounded away at them and I worken on th main. I was amazed that I could actually pull that of relatively easy. Im now interested in trying to off tank some raids with SMN lol

Now be fair Ive used titan solo more than any other pet, but you'd have called a smn a noob if theyd summoned it in a duty

You shouldnt use Titan on fights like that though, however much longer it will keep the DD's alive.

You're not exactly the strongest damage dealer out there as a summoner, there's no need to drag fights out even more using Titan as a pet instead of atleast a damage oriented pet such as Ifrit. Whatever time you think you save soaking up damage with Titan, you lose by taking more hits over a longer period of time.

Two "damage dealers" switching to the adds he summons will take them out in at most 10 or so seconds. Using titan is a massive waste of time and reduces damage done tremendously. If you have extra time on your hands, just toss the other DD that keeps on dying a Physick or something while Ifrit is on it. But then still, Adds need to die ASAP. Yes, he's just going to resummon them, but it gives you some moments to focus on the boss atleast.

If you're wiping on the pets, either (1) people arent focussing on them and attacking them right from the start, because they are incredibly squishy, (2) someone is over-curing and drawing a crapload of hate, or (3) the most common occurance, your party simply isnt strong enough to handle the dungeon and it's bosses.

i'm sorry, what? summoner does indeed put out a lot of damage. It's hard to pinpoint the exact amount because your hate/damage is shared with your pet, and DoT's are currently hard to keep track of using a parser. Why people think it's under powered is because you don't immediatley see their damage. You will notice it in long fights where their DoT's last more than 10 seconds before the mob dies.

I would consider summoner to be one of the better DPS classes even if they did do less damage for just their ability to swiftcast raise, and the fact that they are less likely to pull hate because of split hate between yourself and pet.

From what i hear from other coil groups though, they consider summoner to be better and run with 2-3 of them and say it's faster clearing.

Until their DoT's can be properly taken into consideration and their pet, we will never have an exact definition of which DPS outclasses another.

Had to use titan because the other DD was so bad, he couldnt stay alive. It wasnt the tank or healer or lack of focus fire. It was he was a bad and I was forced to take that measure to progress.

Was in a party with FC last night where we let the summoner tank Garuda HM with Titan. It worked but titan took heavy damage, had trouble getting garuda back into position, and one of the healers accidentally had the targeting set to off for egis. Titan also couldn't hold hate off the blm too well. We still won, but advice is to definitely stick to PAL and WAR main tank Smiley: nod.

I think its great you saw an opportunity to turn a losing situation around by using your pets to tank and Im sorry you have to read so many pointless, negative posts attacking you for picking up the slack of an inferior damage dealer and allowing your group to win. Good job!

The major reason he is receiving the large number of negative comments has more to do with his posting history rather than what he did. At least that's how I see it. Call it karma.

that shouldn't have any relavance, and is abuse of the karma system. you get rated down for a post that deserves to be rated down and are rated up if it deserves to be rated up.

If killua came back and started posting regular things, even with his prior history, his posts wouldn't deserve the bashing. I thought the FF comunity was better than this. Am i the only one who uses the karma system the way it was meant to?

Emergency tanking is definitely a club in the Summoner's bag. Not only can Titan tank whatever ate the player who was tanking, but you're the only non healer who can raise during combat. It can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat especially if you use a well timed Swiftcast to leap into action. Just make sure to switch back to a damage dealing pet once everything is under control again.

If you only have Ifrit and Titan sure, but once you get Garuda you should have no need of Ifrit. Ranged DPS and does seem to do a bit more damage than Ifrit. Just don't have her engage to close to the mobs else the tank wont like you very much as she has a knock back attack.

It's why I have swiftcast right next to Ressurection Smiley: nod

For anyone saying "garuda is a little more damage than ifrit" she's not. Pure damage wise they're about the same and just because garuda can fight at a distance doesn't mean its always the best option. Where Garuda trumps Ifrit is her Contagion. The way I use her is ALWAYS in "obey" and she will shoot off her most basic attack only (and not waste contagion) whic is her highest potency damage attack. If we're fighting trash i will put DoTs on the main target, use contagion and then hit them with bane and fester fug them til they die (be smart about aetherflow you wanna have it up the instant it resets in or out of battle). Contagion alone and bane will bring the other 2 or 3 mobs in a group to about half health by the time u get to them. On bosses you extend the DoT times on boss and let loose with Fester. Garuda is the best pet for that skill alone and not her damage potency.
