So,
I'm picking up a new laptop for work and would like to use it to play 14 also (I play on PS3 but would like to move to PC now since it makes it easier on the fam if I'm not abducting the TV when the wife wants to watch Dr.Phil or something)
In any case, I can't spend a ton of cash building a rig so I found this Asus machine (been hearing increasingly promising things about them)
Based on the official specs this looks like it'll do okay, but what do you guys think?
(it doesnt have to run on super high settings, but I'd like something at least in the upper range of standard)

The hard drive has got to go. Do you have an option to get that in SSD? 5400 RPM hard drive will take that beautiful machine and give you PS3 level loading times, which would be a tragedy.
Otherwise, that looks pretty similar to what I've been eyeing in a new gaming laptop.

Great CPU, decent GPU, more than enough RAM...
As another poster noted, the hard drive is slow. If there is an option to upgrade to either a faster 7200 RPM drive or an SSD (which would be much better but might lead to storage capacity limitations) it will improve loading times.
Overall very solid machine - expect to play on "Laptop(high)" and get 40-60 FPS.

Hard drives are where most laptops get cut but will only affect loading times... SSD drives make for a decent increase in price..

I think the storage capacity limitations are workable, and the performance trade off in an SSD is worth it. Have the smaller SSD for the internal HDD (at least 120GB), and get a slower 500GB USB external for any big files you need (e.g. music, movies, graphic files.)
It's also just safer for a laptop. Hard drives are still a major point of failure, especially if you're rough with the laptop.

I have a 256 GB SSD that is dividided between Mac and Windows and I'm always out of drive space ... but that is my fault ... Mac side has 130 GB and I have a 60GB photo collection that I keep meaning to move elsewhere.
External drives are a pain. I bought this to add storage space and I'm in love with it.
I know a couple of people who had computers with optical drives and they remove the optical drive and replace it with a second hard drive bay. If your laptop is not ultraportable, I think that's the way to go. I have an external DVD drive and I use it about twice a year..

I picked up an Asus G73 on craigslist for this game. It cost me 400 dollars used and handle the game seamlessly. Has hybrid power grid to handle graphic at high settings, but I usually use standard to avoud lagging in congest Uldah.
Thanks for the help guys! I called them up and asked if they'd be able to put in a 128 GB SSD alongside the 1TB HDD and they said yea so I'm gonna go with that, I'll just install 14 on the SSD and use the HDD for other less resource intensive apps.

I think this was a GREAT addition. Having a SSD + a conventional hard drive is certainly the best of both worlds.
Sounds like an excellent value (when packaged with an i7 and a deceng GPU) for under $1000.
Yeah that's the perfect solution and mirrors what I have on my primary desktop. Make sure they put the OS on the 128 and you're golden.
I'd divide up the 1TB slowbie into partitions, too, to help organize things better. I have a separate partition for pictures, music, movies, and application install files (which I got in the habit of calling the "source" drive at my old office.)

I have an Asus G73, have had it for like 2 years or so (might be nearing 3). I like it, battery died on me and I think I have a fan going out (can get super hot).
Still plays games well (play 14 at high settings).
