Is it worth while to make a second and third character, and run through the quest to about thirty? In doing so you could get all the gold rewards and invest it in crafting. I just invested about 80,000 in six crafts and got them all around lvl 15. But then ran out of gil. Another 80k could probably take my crafts to lvl 30 each. From their I could probably make a profit on whatever I make.

Wouldn't it be just as fast to farm up the money on your main character?
If you do make a 2nd or 3rd character, start them in different city states from your main. That way you can see the subtle story differences from 1-15.

If you think another 80k will get all your crafts to 30 prepare to be disappointed. You can get every craft easily to 10 using the guild merchant, after that you are relying on the Market Wards, and it gets pricey if you don't level a DoL job or jobs. Case in point, my Botanist is only level 18 (I think), and I need millioncorn for leveling Culinarian, I think I turned white when I saw that they were being sold for 100 gil each on Excalibur.
Better Idea. On your same character start botany and mining and get the matts yourself and spend 0 gil. Sale what you don't use. Profit

But be advised, the more crafts you take up, the more OTHER crafts you'll have to keep up.
Example: You can't level Goldsmith without miner if you're wanting to level GSM for free. There's needing other crafts to gear up your DoL jobs too, but you can save money still by farming the mats and giving them to people you need to craft your gear if you don't wanna mess with leatherworker/blacksmith/weaver/goldsmith(XD)
yeah it can get crazy.
Btw - somewhat answers your question - Self sufficiency is rewarding and worthwhile so long as you can deal with the upkeep.

Well, you have to keep in mind that crafting is not flatline when it comes to how fast you level or how much it costs. While you literally can buy every crafting material needed to get from lvl 1-15 from the guild shop cheap, and the early quests offer you nearly 10k in shards, those early crafting items dont sell. This usually results in zero profit. Level 15-30 is a different story. Take your 80000 and multiply it by 10. Recipes use more crystals, and the mats are sometimes harder to get or are more expensive. For instance, for goldsmith, making metal from silver or mythril ore or working with unrefined jewels is much cheaper than a weaver making velveteen from diremite webs (at least on ultros). Those are right around the same crafting level. You have to keep in mind the market fluxes and realize that those experience bars eventually require 450-500k to gain a level. Levequests are your best way to go, but you have to realize how to hq your turn ins or you will spend a lot of unnecessary time and money.

Level up your gathering crafts like someone said. Its the most grinding in the game. You make good money why doing it. Use GC survival manual at higher levels to level up quicker. When your leveling gather things you need or things that sell good. I made over a million gil leveling botanist to 50. I didn't use any levequest. I save them for crafting.

I learned the hard way that starting out as a crafter will net you very little profit. You will spend fortunes to make fortunes. On the other hand, by gathering you will make fortunes at the simple cost of your time and sanity.

I know I think i spent almost a million gil from 40 to 50 weaver. IT was may fault for trying to speed level with leves. I still make more money with gathering because everyone's trying to level crafts and are buying the materials. I just trying to save up money so I can get a nice house. Maybe level up carpentry. It might be a good job when housing comes out.
