A very special guest is coming to Eorzea:
http://www.finalfantasy.net/xv/ffxi-ffxiv-dqx-collaborations-revealed/
It looks like the fanservice in FFXIV is just beginning.

Though I am curious what the FFXI side of this will be.

Sorry, but a giant Shantotto boss that allows you (i.e., everyone) have Shantotto as a pet...? It seems like too much, as though it's really shoehorning these cameos into the other games.

I don't mind little pets and guest appearances and so forth, but these events have an exploitative feel to them, as though SE is desperate or so totally out of ideas that they're just mashing their IPs into anything and everything they can. :\

You didn't know Eorzea = Lilliput?

It's not that Shantotto is huge, it's that we are tiny.

Now I didn't address this, but really? You think they are only now shoe-horning in fan service? Did you play FFXI? Because Artifact armor is basically fan service. Moogles? Fan service. Chocobos? Yup, fan service. Any mob whose model came from a previous installment of the series? Fan service.

Is it more blatent here? Hell ******* yes. This game was a catastrophe, and part of how they are appealing to us is to play on our nostalgia for this aging franchise. The game is incredible, but without some fan service to draw people from FFXI or from outside of the SE MMO family, they need to have a hook. I don't care one bit, I am loving it. The pets are the most ***************** worthless thing in FFXIV. If they want to offer up some sentimental item to remind us of prior games, ******* do it there! I love it! Hell, that "Helm of Light", FAN SERVICE TO DISSIDIA :D

I get that you might see it as a crass grab for the heartstrings, I see it as this massive apology for a huge blunder. It's like SE is that boyfriend who said some **** they shouldn't have, and are buying us candy and flowers!

I'm starting to not like this.

Lightning can be explained away with her universe-hopping but Shantotto is a little strange.

I'm not going to complain about it, but it's just a little weird. I mean, this means that Tarutaru exist in Eorzea now.

She's the most powerful Black Mage. Are you going to tell her she can't cross universes?

She was also in Dissidia, and everyone who qualified for the CE reward is wearing a helmet designed after the Warrior of Light's helmet in Dissidia.

Also it's a video game.

You guys didn't finish the Shantotto mini xpac did you?

Remember, she can hop dimensions, so this one does make some sense. Also why she is giant.

#15REDACTED, Posted: Sep 21 2013 at 3:47 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It's kinda funny but ruins the lore of the game, for those that care. Shantoto is a totally different universe, same as lightning.

Good, they're doing something different and fun.

That is still the point of playing a game, right? Fun? I love Shantoto.

Most MMOs are quite serious about sticking to the lore (at least for actual ingame content), infact I can't think of many that don't.

Yea, um, Lightning and Shantoto (as well as the Golems) are all going to be events, like the festivals we have that are mimicking RL holidays.

I disagree. Shantotto is not even close to the most iconic character from FFXI. It's like a light cameo, IMO, and many FFXI players won't even realize it. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like a lot of players never even fought Shantotto.

Sorry, but you might be wrong.

Lightning is probably not just an event. It's very obvious (to me) that Lightning is going to be a main character in the story. I'm guessing we will need to free her from the Ascians.

I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, but I hope they start making some cool, iconic characters/character designs that are unique to ARR.

Well, me and a lot of other people love her!
But do tell who you think the most iconic one is?
If it's that silly Prince from Sandy I'm not buying that.
If it's Prishe she actually irritated me to death.
Or that soppy one from WoTG - Lisette was it?
Now if it's Lion I might go along with thatSmiley: nod

The question is not whether this constitutes "fan service." That was never being questioned.

If you don't see anything different between using redesigned transportation methods of the same names and carrying over actual plot characters, well, I'll never be able to prevail upon you.

I don't like Lightning. (Wait's for the Lightning fanboys/fangirls to make biased comments.)

But I'm all for Shanty! I loved her rhymes and wit that went with them. My favorite one.

/em jumps at the opportunity to be the first Lightning "fan girl". Lightning is simply a great character. Love her or hate her. She's a memorable character whether you dislike the game. She's about to rip up the FF world like no other 'hero' before her.

Your QQ room is reserved.

*voted down. All's still right in the post XII world.

We've had Cid since FFIII and it's kind of not a Final Fantasy game without him now.
