Voice actingFollow

To people who have completed the story, were you satisfied with the amount of voice acting?

I still enjoyed it, but I kinda feel like I can count the amount of voiced cutscenes on my hands, so I really hope that the expansion story is fully voiced or close to it.

It seems like pretty much every voiced cutscene was in the advertisement for the game, giving off the impression that more would be voiced.

You get a few more voice acted scenes as you inch towards the climax, but I still felt that it was lacking.

I haven't finished the main story yet, but I like what I've heard so far. I'm wondering if it's the same people they used for 1.0, because Y'shtola sounds the same from what I remember from the 1.0 beta.

I'm using Japanese tracks and I really like the quality of it, I just wish there was a lot more of it.

Quantity stands to be improved, especially in scenes where voiced in one section, but not the next.

Quality will forever be speculative and I honestly don't want to see this thread devolve into yet another "JP voices are superior!" grumble fest where 9/10 the people who say that can't even speak Japanese. If I had one gripe, it'd be the voice of the lalafell that runs around with Yda. The voice just doesn't fit.

Yeah, not trying to start an English vs. Japanese debate - just talking purely about quantity.

I'm getting pretty close to the end of the story (lvl 44), and the voice acting so far has been sparsely distributed, at best. I just watched a long cutscene with Cid and his airship right before Garuda and it really could have used some voice acting.

I think I'm going to fall off my chair when someone speaks again, it's been that long.

I guess a recent comparison is SWTOR, where a good portion of the quest lines are voiced (particularly the class quests). In comparison the voice overs so far in FFXIV feel like an afterthought. Not that this game lacks in other areas for it to be an issue, but it could have done the storyline some big favours. At the very least, we know they can do it with the engine. So there is some hope for future expansions.

There is a few more clustered together around the Lv. 46 quests.

I speak and understand Japanese. His voice fits perfectly fine in Japanese, a lot of people used to some of the 1.0 voices were probably jarred by the changes in ARR but I gave the other VA a chance and none of them fit the characters, as much as people want to debate against the "JP voices are superior!" (which has never been said in the content you're putting it) the reason people say that is because VERY RARELY is western voice acting fitting or even good as much as people tried to argue against this.

I turned the vocals off because I think the voice acting, particularly those English accents, is just terrible.

I like hearing Minfilia talk.

Yep. I was totally mind blown the minute he talked.

Quality wise there's only a couple bad voices; most of the voices are fine. The dialog is fine and the story (I'm only 37) is starting to get good.

Quantity wise I'd like there to be more. Its just too inconsistent when there is voice and when there's not.

Its far from a big deal and honestly I read faster than they say the words so I end up skipping some of it anyway.

The way SE is doing it you would think the scenes with VO would all be prerendered CGI.

If you ask me. Voice acting is a major waste of money and resources that I would much rather see devoted to more content and more stuff.

Voice acting is nice...but I really feel it adds nothing to the game. Im not lazy enough where I find reading to be difficult...and to be honest I read the text while the voice actors are speaking anyway...

I will agree that is is akward to have a scene that is voice acted and then it stops mid scene. I would almost agree to have them do it all if they were going to attempt it.

Also if its not don't really well, voice acting can cheapen the game experience...not saying it does in this game, but a few characters I hate hearing their voice.

The main story cutscenes that have voice acting I think are fantastic. They are the best and most engrossing storylines I have ever scene in an MMO. The lack of voice in most of them unfortunately starts to make many of them forgetable.

I think it's awful. It usually sounds very disconnected from what's actually happening in the scene. Which just seems wrong. Done well it could've been nice, but this is just half-assed adding of VA to say they have VA.
#16 Sep 16 2013 at 11:12 AM Rating: Excellent
It really does seem like the VA effort was only followed through part way.

Like, "Eh, some of the characters talk, good enough."

I agree, having them stop midway is just akward. Take up the extra meg a minute for the MP3 to have them give me the whole speech, dammit.

I'm generally feeling very lukewarm about the voice acting game with the sole exception of Gaius. With a voice like his, Gaius van Baelsar can conquer my savage territories any day he wants.

I grew up with a 10,000 + album collection from the 40's-60's in the house.

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men... The Shadow knows"

The show would have died with the milquetoast readings the English actors are giving the VO today. The dialog is fine, you just don't "feel it" when they're talking most of the time. It sounds like they're reading, not acting.

I've been told that I have a great voice for radio (which matches my perfect Face for radio Smiley: wink) and eventually I'll get my Mic replaced and prove it.

Square Enix is welcome to retain my services for VO, for the bargain price of Airfare for my family to Japan, and a selection of fruit-juice based gummy candies. Preferably Citrus ones.

Ok, I admit it, I'd do it just for a giant case of citrus gummies alone, But have you had some of the candies they sell in Japan?

The scenes with voice acting are so sparing and...forgettable. I honestly couldn't tell you how many cutscenes I've seen since starting that had voice acting. I remember bits and pieces, like being amused at finally knowing how to pronounce Merlwyb and being invariably annoyed by every lalafell that opens their mouth, but by and large I don't remember enough to be able to point to a main quest and say "there was a voiced cutscene here".

I feel they spent more on jp va than eng va. As for quantity yea its lacking. I was hoping that main story and job quests had voice acting through out. I dont think any of the small quests require va. Idk I feel that if they didnt do any voice acting it wouldnt bother me too much.

I would like a lot of voice acting. I like bad voice acting better than none. If it's so ooo bad, I can turn it off.

I'm fine with the voice acting as is, except one thing that bothered me.

I couldn't stand Kan-E's completely wooden performance. At first, I just thought she was speaking that way because you first hear her when she's giving a speech to all Gridanians. It's conceivable you don't use the same voice in public speaking than you would in other situations. But then to my dismay I discovered that she speaks like that... all... the time.

I mean, unless she's secretly an android, I've never been more disappointed in someone who's supposed to be the leader of those in tune with nature when it doesn't even sound like she has a soul of her own. Rahbaun looks and sounds like a man who's defended Ul'Dah with his very life on the line as a man would his own family. Merlwyb is like a female Captain Picard, though one that's principled in the pirate's code. But Kan-E? I've got nothing.

I switched to Japanese as soon as i could. The english voices were really bugging the hell out of me. They werent as bad as FFXIII's Vanille (seriously, i wanted to rip my ears off everytime she opened her mouth...), but they were pretty horrific, didnt feel like any of them matched the characters at all in my eyes. I watched the new trailer earlier where you hear all the key characters speak in english, and i dont think i would have enjoyed the game quite as much as i did with japanese voice-acting.

That said. Japanese voices were pretty fitting and well chosen. The badguys actually sounded evil. Opposed to what i could hear from the english trailer that featured some of the final parts of the game as well (elevator fight), it felt like he was simply reading up lines without putting any feeling into it at all.

But to be honest, i had lost my faith in english voice acting ever since FFX (which was still decent, just went downhill from there) already, so it's not like i had high expectations this round.
