Can anyone explain this system? I have gear that has 2 of the same materia melded in and both display +3 of gathering. Went to another piece put in +1 strength go and put a second one in and it gives me a second stat of +0. Item level of the chest 20. Item level of the helm I meld 20 and both melds gave me +0. So what is the deal?

I think, hopefully someone can back me up on this, there's a stat limit on gear. So for example, say a level 20 chest piece can only have a total of +4 strength. If it has a base of +3 strength before materia, you can only add one more strength with materia. Any other strength materia after that won't have any effect.

It sounds like the gear you have with +gathering isn't going beyond its the cap, but the gear you have with +strength is.

This is exactly what I've noticed from my experience. When melding you will get a warning like "This equipment is not high enough level for this meld." in orange on the melding screen. It will still let you meld it but then your +3 might be +2 or your +1 might be +0 (and thus wasted).

I'm not sure what gear is the best to meld to right now for optimizing stat boosts like this.

Probably a safe assumption that whatever materia tier the gear yields, that'd be the intended materia range. But in general, I think the caps are to encourage using a wider variety of materia than people just plopping main stat and nothing else.

The higher the iLVL, the higher the stat cap on materia.

This said, STILL, some materia caps very low in some spots, and higher in others.

For example, Dex and Str cap much higher on gloves, because they are associated with the stat, while int and mnd cap higher on head pieces, vit on body, etc.

For straight stats, they seem to cap much lower than parry / crit / etc. Its because stats are very very powerful now, and a +2 dex is a huge difference.

The above information is accurate. Item level is what governs stats gained by materia on gear. If an item comes with a stat on it, you can usually assume that you can get at least 1 materia on it of the correlating stat with full benefit (however a low level item still may not take a tier iv materia at full stat benefit). It IS a mistake to think that item level means the gear is better. As this is not always the case. (Because very few will be able to fully stack 5 materia on items, and different people will build their jobs differently.)

Edit: A higher item level will help in cases in which you want a materia on it of a higher tier to full affect, or a materia that may not be 'compatible' with said piece of gear.
