Old-school grind partiesFollow

I'm not sure if it has occurred to anyone to try this in FFXIV or not, but I have not seen any posts about doing so. I've noticed while soloing that the XP chains are a rather nice boost to the percentage of XP you get. I've also noticed that in parties, the XP split is cut rather drastically, but the chains are still there.

So, I wonder if anyone has had any data on what happens when you take a full party and try to take down much higher level mobs. Is the XP so considerably less than, say, doing a dungeon run as to make partying higher level mobs not worthwhile or is it that we've all been so caught up in the obvious paths to grinding that we just haven't experimented with the old FFXI model as of yet?

The reason I ask is that I have a lot of IRL friends playing this game and it would be nice to party with them if there was a good pay-off for doing so. Level-capping the dungeons is almost, in a sense, holding back the more skilled players in this game. Could we pull together to get ahead?

Haven't really looked into that since quests give a lot of xp but what I did like was the fate parties! Full parties in an area going from fate to fate and chain them. If the fates are close enough you can make tons of xp. Did it a couple of times for a fast level and GC collection.

Aleport is particularly good for that pre-20.

My wife and I have been making old-school grind duos. We're level ~14 right now and consistently hit chain 6 (+50% exp.). Naturally we plan to try out some dungeons when we're the appropriate level, as well.

Quests are just so tedious, especially the ones that have you, say, pick up a sparkling item directly in front of the questgiver, grab some herb/egg/whatever from a spot 15 seconds away, or just go talk to some guy standing across camp.

I mean, I understand that some people see grinding as tedious -- it really can be sometimes -- but at least grinding didn't feel as though it was patronizing your intelligence every step of the way. So by and large we skip doing them (and have been having fun). It remains to be seen how feasible this method is, of course (likely not very). Still, most of these quests feel less like an adventure and more like the game is just testing to make sure I'm not a bot. Smiley: lol

I would also like to know if anyone else has more information on this. There's times where I would just love to EXP party with people instead of grinding or doing leve's, dungons, etc...

Exactly! It would be a fun way to mix things up.

^^This. You articulated what I have been feeling as I have been doing the main scenario. There have been plenty of moments where I have stopped and said, "Was that really necessary"?

Since you have a ton of quests that involve picking up items in the main storyline, I really wonder why they didn't hold those off for DoL classes.

Doing the quests scratches a different kind of itch. For me it's not about the exp. It's about playing whack a mole with the gold ! marks.

I do it for the equipment or extra gil. I also enjoy the chain-quests. I prefer to level to a point where I feel I am missing content and then go back and quest. Usually, by the time I've scratched that itch, I am well-equipped and gil'ed up enough to take on some grind.

So, I know how you feel. I quest for an entirely different set of reasons than I do for leveling.

I think the invention of Fate parties has replaced our once-beloved FFXI grind parties, but I do not think this is a bad thing. I also prefer grouping up and tackling baddies (no matter how monotonous) over simple fetch quests any day, bit I think ARR has done a great job of giving us viable options. I always thought it was funny to read MMO dialogue along the lines of:

Villager: "Praise be! The Warrior of Light, forged from many battles and trained keenly in the art of dragon-slaying, is here to save our realm from certain darkness and depravity. Could you please go fetch us 10 carrots from that field over there?

Hahah! Amen brother, amen!

And yea, the /emote quests are the worst, by far. I give em props for trying to spice up the noob quests with it, but after level 5 I don't want to /dance for my EXP ever again.

I get the step-and-fetch in town quests are a bit silly, however there is the underlying function of introducing you to a spot in the town/camp/place that you might not look around in. There are a lot, A LOT, of stupid gamers out there and younger not-yet-wise players out there that I see as the reason those quests are in there... instead of go out into the field and whack beasties all day, go walk around town and learn where NPCs are. For the seasoned gamer, sure... those are dumb.

The emote quests I actually like. Not because doing them is fun at all, but it makes the player realize there are emotes in the game which should prompt the player to explore other emotes. They are really well done and you should really watch your character do the emote because the actions and the facial expressions are quite remarkable.

Long story short (too late!) - these silly quests have to be in there for the lowest common denominator.

Doing quests is a great way to get gear and items, such as potions and ethers. For free. Oh and they give large chunks of exp.

Some are ok, I actually read a lot of them and they tend to add to the atmosphere of the various areas or explain certain landmarks.

Pick carrots for exp, money, and some new shoes? Sign me up.

I like doing the quests that give me free yet good gear, while my coin stash is slowly building.

Exactly, last night was the first night I have actually got to play much since launch. I ended up randomly getting invited to a FATE grind party while doing main story line quest. I went from LVL 25 to LVL 28 in about 45 minutes, it was crazy. I just had to learn not to tank otherwise I would always just die. The key is to just switch from mob to mob instead of trying to tank a group. MAR has enough AOE tanking ability the next thing I knew I was dead in seconds......LOL.

It was a great mix up from running around and doing quests. I personally hate the questing but love the story involved in it. I just gut it out for the chance of finally getting a quest where there is some action...........but I guess every story needs some downtime between high points.

Either way, much more impressed with the leveling here than in XI, many more avenues to take depending on your mood when you log on :)

Oh, this. So very this. I just did the main quest involving the sylphs and I wanted to punch something.

"Dancing one is great!" "Helpful one is helpful!" "giggles, you poked me!"

Grrr.

Wait until you get to the pre-req quests for the Titan fight... blargh. Several hours of run here, chocobo there, go kill X number of Y mobs that are right outside, fetch something from across the world, spend an hour on a chocobo running back and forth...

Personally, I'd rather grind in an old school FFXI party. Exp grinds in FFXI weren't so bad because you'd meet people and chat with them while partying, especially merit parties where most folks who'd reached 75 were non-idiots and cool to talk to.

Yeah, grind parties are fate parties. You fill up to eight of any job/class and go around the zone from fate to fate. Every so often there is a dead time between fights but it is ok. For instance I went thm 23-30 last night outside costa del sol.

Overworld grinding parties are much more like ffxi in its current state, instead if book burns, you fate burn.
