#1 Sep 03 2013 at 8:47 AM Rating: Decent
Sorry if this was asked before. Haven't been able to find any posts around here.

What are the best controllers to play ffxiv on the pc besides the ps3 with motionjoy and the xbox controller?

Thanks

I use a PS3 controller with the keyboard attachment. Works great.

The wired 360 controller is my go to.

First, it is plug-and-play. Second, the in-game menu now allows for button customization so you don't need a 3rd button mapping party program.

Lastly, you never need to stop to replace the batteries mid-dungeon.

I just use a wired 360 pad too you can get cheaper third party ones for about half the price that would work too.

The Xbox 360 controller is nice as it works right out of the box, but the D - pad in my opinion is worse than the PS3 one. I haven't tried out the newer edition of the Xbox controller which supposedly makes the D - pad better. The PS3 controller is nice for the D - pad, but getting the third party drivers to work properly can be a headache the first time around. Logitech's controllers are good too, but most of their controllers have square analogue area for the sticks to move in rather than circle or 8 shape.

I use a DualShock3 (PS3) controller and love it. They are bluetooth, so if your computer already has bt, you don't need to buy an extra adapter. Also they use a standard mini-USB cable for charging, and can be used over USB or BT. There are a few choices out there for 3rd party drivers for the ds3 controller, because there is no official Sony or Microsoft driver for it. I use MotionInJoy, which is a Chinese made driver that has been around a while. It has an strange launcher with HTML ads, and can be buggy at times, but it gets the job done for free. I have MotionInJoy set to emulate the XBox controller so that Windows Live supported games recognize it. Also the rumble feature works just fine in FFXIV and really adds to the immersion.

The XBox controller is another option, but Microsoft makes you buy special hardware to get it to work on PC because they use a proprietary wireless signal so I don't recommend it. I'm a bit biased though, as I just hate the xbox controller - it seems bulky and the bejeweled buttons just look silly and don't lend to comfort.

Thanks for the idea - the Gamestop employee I spoke with had no clue what a higher-end PC controller might be. I just ordered this from amazon, here in two days ftw!

Yo, i decided to go with the ps3 controller route since i already have one and it seems cheaper than buying a new controller.

What bluetooth dongle is everyone using?

Like most people said, Xbox 360 is a solid choice. It works right out of the box (being Microsoft, most PC games with controller support already have its profile set to go) and has a nice weighty feel, IMO.

PS3 Controller as well. Once you have the MotionInJoy drivers loaded then download 'Better DS3' and use that instead that pos AD driven buggy management tool. As for Bluetooth adapters just about any cheap one should work, I use a $12 Asus USB dongle.

If you have a usb charger cable that plugs into the front of the pad it works just like the wired pad.

Pretty much this, although I am currently just using mouse + keyboard in FFXIV for convenience.

I use a wired xbox 360 controller as well. For FFXI I used a PS2 controller. I switched to keyboard + mouse for a bit just to see what it's like. Both I had trouble with targeting. Like, crowded situations where I constantly target Carby, it's very annoying. I turned the option off, but then I can target objects and such. I feel like the Dev team should separate the two.

I use a PS3 controller and MotionJoy (sounds like an "adult" toy >.>), but i use it via USB, as MotionJoy's driver will overwrite your Bluetooth stack in Windows and can cause problems if you want to use other BT devices.

I'm another that uses ps3 gamepad as well, just with a different, far superior driver than motionjoy, whose name currently eludes me.

I use the FFXIV pc gamepad....just because it was really cheap, I got it for around $15 US a year and a half ago, and its exactly like a ps3 controller except wired. It works great for other games too.....I bought it to play other games not to play FFXIV with lol

Part of me wants to get a controller and spare my fingers some.

I just don't feel confident that ill be able to preform well in raids...I don't trust the tab target to be quick and accurate enough ect.

I use a combination of controller and mouse targeting. Usually I have no problem outside of crowded Fates.

You'll want to practice, though.
