Has anyone else who plays on a JP server noticed the incredibly low lag despite being overseas? My pings are the same to an NA server as they are to a JP server. How'd they do that?
Or is this all in my head?

It's in your head. It's almost impossible to eyeball the latency difference between the JP and NA servers. If you calculate the difference based sorely on the ping factor, the NA/EU servers beat out the JP servers by 0.5sec. The reason you might think otherwise is due to the capacity being filled thus giving NA/EU servers some noticeable latency. Yoshi tried to explain this, but he wasn't very clear about it.
I do notice with the JP servers that damage calculations has a noticeable delay 'at times', but most of the time it's pretty instantaneous. You're right though, ping is a poor way to judge latency.
