ChocoboFollow

Just reached level 20, scoured the internet for answers to my questions, but everything seems out of date or to vague...Soo I'm turning to you fellow forum friends!

Questions:
1. Where do I go to get my own chocobo?
2. Do they come in various colors?
3. Are there dyes for them if I don't like the color it turns out to be?
4. Some sources say they are faster than rented, some say they are slower, some say the same speed. Which is it?

Thanks!

Do the main story. When you join a grand company you can get a generic yellow bird.

There are no dyes for birds, and the only two colors atm are yellow, and yellow with black tips (legacy only).

There is a free unicorn at 30 for WHM/CNJ but all jobs can use it.

The main story also rewards you with magitech i believe somewhere near the end (some jp group got it, go figure their servers werent down/1017 ing)

Just so you know, after you join a Grand company you don't just get a chocobo. You have to buy the whistle with GC seals. I think its 1K seals or something like that. The fastest way to get those are F.A.T.E.s AFTER you join a GC or the GC hunt log. You can customize your chocobo with barding but you can not dye them. The GC you chose has either a blue, yellow, or red barding. More barding will come later.

Just got it last night. It will be different depending on what city you chose, but here is the plan.
Pick a grand company (from the three guys in fez hats). Now you can earn guild seals. You can build them up fast by going into an instanced dungeon (Halafell gave me a load of seals from just killing stuff) or you can do FATES and leves and turn in craft assignements at the guild counter in the home city if you want to go about it the slow way. Anyway, build up your seals to 2000. Then go to the grand company counter (I'm Ul'dah so I go to the Flames' counter) and select the guy that you would use to buy guild weapons and armor. He sells items as well. The chocobo ticket should be in there. Buy it for 2000 and bring it down the way to the Chocobo Handler to finish the quest.

The speed of the chocobo is similar to when you have "Sprint" up but it never wears off. And the great thing is that you can take them where you want, summon them anywhere, and jump with them, which are all things you can't do with a rented.

I don't see the chocobo ticket - I went all the way to the lvl 25 GC quest after the dungeon, I'm a 1.0 player but non-legacy, is there something I am missing? This is driving me nuts.

Also I checked delivery moogle, nothing came in there, so I'm not legacy for sure, no tattoo nothing.

Have you got 2k deals and bought the chocobo license/whistle? Doesn't matter if you had it in 1.0 you have to do it again, do fates for fast seals you'll have it in no time.

Nope, just got it, completely wrong - looks like there is this Calamity Salvager that SQ never bothered to mention properly to those that weren't in the loop through 1.0, like us non-legacy 1.0 players.

Took 2 hours before I even discovered the dude existed, anyways he has the Chocobo Whistle, if you had it previously in 1.0 and never got the legacy chocobo whistle
