Most everybody I've been talking to has the client completely shut down at some point, but it seems to be the exception and not the rule.
For all we know, it's the clients way of saying "STOP IT, YOU ARE NOT GETTING IN TODAY!"

Happened to me at least 2-3 times this weekend. It would usually occur when I'd alt+tab out of the game and then try to alt+tab back in.
I'm running in borderless windowed on two monitors so there's not a lot of alt-tabbing going on. I was just trying to open up my character screen to see how horrible my earrings/wrist bits were and it went kerplunk. (Then I got 1017.)
I'm actually not that upset about it. XI does it to me 2-3 times a day.

Oh, so you're talking about the game as a whole going splat! I was talking about people trying to log in who sometimes get the client to shut down completely. I hadn't heard much about what you saw, though other widespread events may be overshadowing it.
