Censorship since last Phase 3?Follow

I noticed something playing this last beta. On the main story quest in Ul'dah, you eventually run into a merchant accusing a woman of stealing from him.

I'll post the description in a spoiler tag, in order to filter it out for those easily offended. If you are one of those people, don't peek, then get mad after the fact:

Originally, in Phase 3, the merchant calls her a thieving *****, but during Phase 4, it got changed to thieving mongrel or scoundrel, something similar, yet a whole lot 'tamer'

I'm not sure what to think of this. I remember seeing a post on the Beta forums where people were complaining the game wasn't toddler-friendly, due to certain references. Looks like SE listened.

Some would consider it misogyny, in this context, since this is a man who feels that since he has been wronged by this woman she should be forced to have sex with him as though she were a thieving ***** in order to make it up to him or he'd have her arrested.

Now, there are plenty of ***** and whoresons references that are still in the game's dialogues as of P4, meant to be taken in a lighthearted manner, but this scene itself goes beyond vulgarity and into implied rape which is a great deal more offensive than some off-color remarks. I think it's a step past the "T" rating and one of the ratings boards had them tone it down.

Edit: seems I lost the bulk of my original message, much to my chagrin

Shallow people probably would. But I'm sure he'd have responded in kind had it been a thieving male prick Everything can't always be taken for face value. But i guess now we'll never know his true intentions. :P

Isn't the game rated Teen. If they let me talk like I did when I was a teen I should be able to permanently scar some young minds.

This is exactly what I was thinking. We have the ESRB for a reason. When the text was in, the game was rated teen. People need to get over it. The game is clearly not friendly for toddlers - its rated T for teen!

Parents need to exercise their own censors instead of forcing everyone else to be censored along with their children.

Man this is sad. During phase 3 I was telling my LS how I like how the story, and CS's seem to have no boundaries. Like anything could happen, and be said. I was really looking forward to what else they put in the game. Guess all that has been toned down now. Smiley: bah

Woud a word like that really cause damage to a young person? I hate to see what happens to that person when they enter the real world.

We live in the era of political correctness. I won't go into how detrimental political correctness is to our society in the long run but they are going to want to do whatever they can to not put off anyone. They want to make as much money as possible so stuff like that won't be happening again. They gotta keep those 3 people that didn't like it happy.

I reckon, seems silly to me.
Edit: I mean I was always told to suck it up and get thicker skin. Guess it comes down to raising.

Didn't want to spoil it, so my response is below.

If you remember that quest, you were able to witness the actual event while in one of your hypnotic episodes. By doing this, it proves that you have a sort of second sight.

I remember that quest as well. Sad really cause I liked it and I also liked the fact that Ul'dah was such a "dark" place.

What I also remember is a woman in the beta forums making a thread saying that she loves the game but because she wants her child to play with her she wanted a bit more censorship and she also mentioned that conversation as well. It pissed me off then and even more now since it seems SE considered it. I mean come on.

Kids watch television and I am not talking about the news go watch a 50 cent music video clip and that kid will know everything there is to know for the...erm...the woman body.

So when a game like this is rated T for teen (although I do not always agree with the ratings) it means it has stuff that your kid should not see. So you don't go ahead and change the game you just stop your kid from playing. Hell it's not like a TV program that you can't control, the game costs money each month money your "kid" can not get without you finding you.

It's PEGI 16, ESRB T for Teen, who were these people complaining?
The ESRB rating even includes more descriptive stuff on what the rating was based

Language
Mild Blood
Sexual Themes
Use of Alcohol
Violence

The information is there for parents to make decisions, no one should be complaining about the odd *****.

The blacksmith guildmaster says ***************

The dialogue styling seems very varied, it's ...interesting. xD

As has been pointed out it was probably just a misogyny change. I'm ok with it, but that was the fight that I was getting 90000'd on and am still salty about it. :D

They removed the mithra "dancers" on the stage in the mining guild too. The ones that were pretty much mentioning that they would meet you out back. And another even more interesting dialogue if you spoke to them as a female character. Replaced them with boxes for crying out loud. The entire mining guild is back to being a complete sausage fest. I actually liked the place before.

There is some heavy sensoring in some parts, but at the same time, there's two women in an alley in Limsa "flirting" heavily with two sailors. So i really dont get it.

If they wanted to soften things up, they should have done so everywhere. And if they wanted to keep this civilized but a bit more mature, then they should have kept most of these things in. They dont actually do anything, it's just the suggestion of it. Perhaps it's because i'm from one of the least prudish countries out there, but i actually liked the whole more mature aspect of this game. It wasnt really hurting anyone that wasnt allowed to play this in the first place.

I can't believe they changed it ( started as THM in P3). The game is T for teen so there isnt a real reason for the censorship. I am more surprised that parents would want little children to play this game because online interactions are worse than anything they could even imagine.

maybe it's just red tape and legal bs to get the game suitable for launch?
#20 Aug 22 2013 at 3:45 PM Rating: Decent
I just don't think using ***** as an insult fits the setting too well. I dunno. I know the scene you're talking about.

Some would consider it misogyny,

Given the fact that the merchant is blatantly xenophobic and implies that he's going to use force or report her to the guards if she doesnt provide him sexual favors, I'm not sure that possibly being misogynistic is the reason that word was disincluded.

I must say, I enjoyed the salty language of P3 dialog a lot more than the P4 dialog. I dont feel like language was used for shock value, strictly for characterization.

Definitely possible, but somehow, I doubt it. I'm thinking its more of a way to eliminate even the remotest possibility of bad press. I keep thinking of the dismal failure that was 1.0's launch, and how SE seem to be doing everything possible to ensure that doesn't happen again.

Some things like 3102 and 90k are a bit more difficult to plan for, but notice how SE is trying to soothe peoples fears/worries with different things. I hope they continue working to make this launch as painless as possible, but this type of politial correctness in a game where I slay literally millions of animals and people is a bit alarming. The game is T for Teen, and specifically states that Online Interatsions not rated by ESRB. I just don't get what people are expecting here.

Mithra Dancers are alive and well in front of some steps in Ulduh. I don't know if they talk but they do look like their knees get sore at night.

Its an insult. An Ad hominem. It literally could be anything. It happened to be *****, which is as valid as anything else. So even bother changing it?

I don't know, I've seen a fair bit of colorful dialog still in the game, even during open beta. Unless its somehow been changed, the quest "Nailing It" (or nailed it? I don't remember the exact name) in La Noscea somewhere (the place with the ship being built, I don't remember the name of the place either) contains dialog that mentions a cold *****'s crotch. I thought the dialog fitting and funny, considering the character of the NPC involved and the setting.
