I think I'm going to miss Play OnlineFollow

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really do think I'm going to miss Play Online.

I'm not going to miss the extra steps that I had to go through every time I wanted to play the game. But what I will is the fact that my "friend" relationship was based around an underlying account that was associated with multiple characters, and allowed me to even be in touch with players on completely different Worlds.

I created two characters during Phase 3 and I noticed right away that the friend list I set up on my initial character did not transfer to my 2nd character. I can see how that might be a good thing for some players, particularly if they create an alt to "get away" from their main character's connections. But I want my friends to know I'm online even when I'm on an alt. But I guess I can live with that.

However, just in the last few days I learned that I have some old FFXI friends who are planning to play FFXIV, and they are going to be joining a World that some of their other friends had already picked out. Meanwhile, I'm already on a different World with a handful of other friends from FFXI. So I'm probably going to wind up making a character on two different worlds. I really wish that I didn't have to log into each one to find out which of my friends happen to be online in each World. And if I happen to decide that I want to kill some time playing on World A, I wish that my friends on World B could see that I'm indeed online on my other character rather than simply seeing that I'm offline.

Anyone else feel this way? Or am I missing some way to manage my online status and friend's list to overcome these issues?

I hear you, I have some friends from FFXI on Ragnarok and another different server (I forget which) to the one I'm on.

Hopefully, they'll implement a cross-server friends list (I thought I'd seen it discussed, could be wrong) that works Secret World style where we can meet up and play together temporarily.

PS3/PS4 players still have this functionally that allows old friends to stay in contact and know when the other is online. I have many new friends on my PS3 that already joined another server so we keep in contact though messages or chat. It's sad the PC doesn't have a similar community.

After years of playing FFXI, I neve minded the initial log in time it took to get into the game from PlayOnline. But yes, it did seem like this tool used to help facilitate keeping up with who was online and communication. I'd leave PO running pretty much constantly if I wasn't in game.

Blizzard's tool they use for Diablo 3 was nice. Using the Real Friend ID, you can see who was where, playing what game.. and IM them from Diablo to WoW or visa versa.

I'm sure more than a few people will miss (or in some cases, already do miss) what's been referred to as the "POL Yeah guy."

I'm not sure, but I think I remember reading somewhere that we'll have a friend function available on the Lodestone. Of course, I may be having flashbacks to 1.0 when a lot of stuff was thrown around as 'coming soon'
It won't be the same as an in-game cross-server friend list like wow, but it may help.

Yeah, the option to stay connected to friends even on different worlds with the friend list was a really nice option.

Works with any Blizzard game you use Battle.net to login with.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

I'll certainly miss the peppy music you heard when you would view update announcements in POL. I would often read update notes in POL rather than from a web site just so I could heard the music.

I won't miss Playonline that much, but i will miss all the music contained in it. My favorite was the music that played when you managed your content ID stuff.

I liked the music in the Play Online menus and when it was updating. The PoL version that came with FFXI, that is. I don't know of the older versions.

Anyway check out the FFVIII town that they are playing in, HERE. How did they manage that? Nice.

I feel you, I think I was one of just a few people who actually liked PlayOnline and found it to be a fun hub of sorts.

Ah the POL music...its burned into my mind as much as the Mog House tune. For a few years 2004-2006 I'd rush home from work and fire up the computer and that "Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding" opening would flood my brain with endorphins. What an addiction.
