Is it class/job only? I was in a couple dungeon instances where someone marked the targets to kill sequentially. It really helped distinguish which target to take out first.

There is a red bauble next the others that is called signs it looks like a water droplet. This will give u a window of all marks. You can also drag them to your hot bar and kehbind them

I'd be interested to know how to do this on PS3 in case I level MRD further.

Anyone know how that is done on the Playstation?

Hit square on the controller while the mob is highlighted. It will bring up an option to mark the target, and then a list of available marks. You can also hotbar the marks for quicker markings.

Could also setup a macro to mark a mob when you an ability on the mob kill two birds with one stone so to say. This way dps knows which mob you are hitting, wish more tanks did this.

I haven't messed with macro stuff too much, it hurts my brain trying to figure that **** out. But that is another good way to do it.

You can also make macros that target based on the marks.

So you could use them for CC, put the X on something and then have a macro that just sleeps X.

Macros were considered standard fare in FFXI, before voice became popular in WoW etc - since FFXIV still doesn't have voice communication yet, you really should put in the effort to learn how to use macros.

Plus you have the phenomenon of JP/NA players too in FF

My binds are usually 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, E, R, T, G, V, X since I use a split keyboard. For marking I took hotbar 6 (since I don't use it), bound the keys to 7 through = and the alt variants (so it's a full bar) and assigned 5 marks, 3 CC, and 2 ignores. I then hid the bar and shared it across classes so that I can mark with any class using those hotkeys.

To be fair, WoW doesn't have built in voice either.

In this day and age if I were running end game content I would expect any people joining my guilds group as a pickup to have all 3 major voice chat programs installed and setup.

Oh that's right they did add that, but it was so bad the player base never really used it and still don't.

Why? Not everyone wants to speak - it might be that they're in a different time zone or something. Heck, they may not even be able to speak or hear. I don't expect anything of players other than what the game gives them.

Most people who join in won't end up speaking, but being able to quickly relay instructions during combat is pivotal to success in the end-game environments of most modern MMOs.

Since we haven't really seen or heard anything about end game in XIV there is no telling if real time communication is necessary. I am personally a fan of it as in my opinion it allows for more difficult encounters. However, you do raise a good point about accessibility with people who don't or can't speak the same language. With the much slower combat pace of XIV maybe it will be possible to still have interesting encounters without the need for fast communication. The mark system and <calls> are a good start towards allowing people to communicate non-verbally.

The numbers help the THM tremendously. I need to know the #2 so I can sleep it prior to blasting the #1 with DD. Otherwise I have to guess, and if they are close together I am 50/50 on what the tank will target.

In FFXI, I recall running Salvage one time with an end game LS I was a part of for a short time. They did all of the communication through /p chat. After that, I didn't touch Salvage until until a friend in my LS asked me to fill a need for his group, and he had me set up Ventrillo to use at least for that run. It amazed me how much smoother things went with the voice chat. I didn't even say anything, though I tried (I didn't realize at the time that there was a push to talk key).

Xbox360 party chat for FFXI worked great if you could get an all XBOX team.

That is one of the key issues facing XIV voice chat, excluding people who can't speak english is bad enough, but excluding people who are on PS3 is even worse as they will be a sizable part of the population.

Salvage and Nyzul Isle are two XI events where voice communication was a major bonus. (Arguably modern 5 NM Delve runs these days are too.)

I prefer to avoid the use of voice chat outside of those specific, timed events though. My gaming box is in the living room, and three other people live here. I don't want to annoy them with too much chatter. I've yet to find a comfortable headset/microphone combo I can live with, so it's a pair of comfy headphones and my old USB stick mic in the meantime.
