Which Class and WhyFollow

The time is nigh to begin thinking about what we will choose to become when the game starts, seeing as our classes will be wiped in phase 4.

I'm interested in hearing which classes you all will be choosing and why... I also think this thread will go some ways to help others who are as of yet undecided choose what they'll be doing. There is still a lot of unknown as to how the jobs will work, so state your case!!!

For my first class I'll definitely be going CNJ, I mostly want to always make sure I'm easily able to get into a pt... and everyone knows white mages have no problem doing this Smiley: smile

Just as a side note, is there any early indication as to which class will be the biggest DPS?

I'm choosing an Ul'dah class, because I know a friend is going PUG and another is going GLA. I can always run to Gridania for CNJ.

PUG here because I enjoy a fast pace of beatings ;P also thinking about conj cause of the lack of healers ...

GLA for me because I find tanking to be really fun as well as a nice challenge.

I will be going SCH because I love healing, but I don't enjoy WHM. Hopefully it is fun and just as viable as WHM both in small and larger events. Can't wait to try it out!

Lancer first to unlock Dragoon. Second will be Paladin for tanking.

Hoping to see DRK, NIN and SAM added soon.

I'm going to start Marauder for the Limsa story arch, but I'll be switching to Gladiator/Conjurer after I craft for a while.

I'll probably be GLA most of the time since my g/f will most likely be a CNJ and my friend will be a DD of some sort.
Plus from my experience, most tanks seem to have issues holding threat on everything.

Starting with MRD since it's my highest 1.0 class. After that I'll head to Gridania. I'm interested in all 3 classes there.

I'll play marauder lancer puglist and move to dragoon warrior then monk to see which one I'd rather play. I'm not in beta so I don't have a clue which I'd rather be at this point so until then it's trial and error. Side note I wish necromancer was an option but it doesn't fit with final fantasy.

So we will get our charaters widped in both pase 3 and phase 4 of beta? I thought only characters of phase 3 were getting wiped and open beta characters will stay.

Phase 4 characters/progress get saved for launch. Unless the plan has changed.

Not sure if I like GLA yet...maybe it gets better at 22 (provoke). If not, I'll probably go with MAR or LNC.

Wife is going CNJ and ARC for SMN.

i thought id be going lancer before any betas. because ive always loved lancers and lances and halbergs as weapons in general, and their armor looks ultra hot. but with friends/roommates involved i decided to tank. tried glad first and then decided to go marauder instead. the glad seems too ez and maybe generic for me. it is the classic unkillable tank. but i wanted more dmg, more options, and i thought warrior was a dps but once i found they were tank, it was on. both seem ez now but i think marauder armor and axe will look 'cooler' to me endgame.
I tried the giant dudes and they ran too weird for me. so i lvled a human female lancer to 15, but she is super ugly. next beta i checked out elf race and wasn't digging that. made a black/yellow cat guy as my next beta char (26 glad,20mrd,20cnj). then i have another lvl 5ish giant chick and think that will be the one ill ultimately make. just have to make another human female to make sure. sorry i dont care to remember names of races, but who can forget lalafell =p (too child-like for me, add the mustache for @#%^fell effect)
ill go samurai asap as main most likely, hopefully live launch but i do not think it'll happen. and ill take up 2 crafting and 2 gathering skills im thinking.

I tried out MRD this weekend, and it seemed pretty fun. I didn't do any party activities due to not having a keyboard, but I should have that fixed by the end of the week. As of right now, it will probably be my pick. The survivability is great, and the damage isn't terrible. I just wish I put my attribute points into VIT instead of STR. The extra HP seems like it'll be a bit more convenient than slightly higher damage.

I'm starting with arcanist because I like limsa best, and because I enjoy healing in dungeons. Based on the data-mined info I saw posted in one of these zam threads, it looks like arcanist is going to open up some very useful cross class abilities for DoM, so I won't feel like I wasted any time on that class even if I don't like it as much as cnj or thm.

I made a huge, freaking roegadyn mrd this weekend, and I felt that my points were best spent in vit and dex. That having been said, melee isn't really my cup of tea so I could be way off base. I just made the mrd so I could try out the LL storyline.

I'm glad to hear that they will have useful cross class abilities for DoMs. As of right now there really isn't anything worth cross classing for THM or CON. Sure you can get a nerfed cure or protect, but in a group you won't really need either. And CNJ can get Thunder, but the duration combined with it having a cast time makes keeping it up 100% a bit difficult. Surecast seems decent, but until I know of any 100% interupts It will be unused by me. I've been sticking to the increased damage and crit rate buffs from Archer and Pugilist.

Will Arcanist start off with any curative abilities, or will they not get any until Scholar?

I'm not sure about curatives for arcanist, but I saw a lot of Bio for DOT. Sch is supposed to be heals and buffs, which makes sense because whm doesn't have a lot of buffs.

Edit: here's the thread I was talking about. A lot of these abilities look like they would be great for CC dps, but unless carbuncle is cranking out some major heals, I don't see arcanist doing a lot of heals. The class description on the official ARR site is what says that sch is heals & buffs.

I want to be a Tank for this game, so I'm going with the MRD. GLA was okay, but what really drew me away from it, (vain reason ahead) is that I didn't like using a friggin dagger as my weapon. If I was a thief or something, I could deal, but not my heavily armored, 6' 7" Roe GLA. I know there is the short swords as well, but they were little too. I would rather have a big axe! Oh I know. It is so dumb to have GLA use daggers, especially for the majority of the first 22 levels >.<

I seen those as well, which seems quite a bit better. After switching though, I don't think i'll go back to GLA. MRD is just so much faster paced IMO.

I'll be moving to Ultros on 4, and going the CNJ>WHM route for general play and reserving a tank-y class to raise with the missus on HER slower climb to WHM.

I may do something similar with my girlfriend as well. I'll be spending most of my time crafting in the first month or two though.

Also, I am looking forward to the PLD only heal they are obligated to get. Hopefully info about it comes out in phase 4.

I will probably start CNJ because I have always liked Gridania best of the three cities. CNJ has good early cross class skills (cure and aero) and could be one of the tougher jobs to bring to lvl 10 because it just doesn't have the same offensive power. By picking it first quest xp can carry me most of the way. Then I will focus on Arcanist -> Summoner as my main job. I really enjoy playing mage classes and will likely end up lvling a few of them anyways :)

Planning on reviving my taru DRG from XI, so created a galka THM & elvaan MRD this weekend for the other city storylines (first weekend in beta). Will prob start as CNJ tho, as cure & protect are always useful (even if nerfed) for any class. Also was useful seeing some crafting & gathering relationships (10 MIN, 8 ARM) - will definitely get BOT & MIN up to at least 10 once airship opens up, before I start crafting - ran out of ice shards v.quickly. And crafting ... gods, which one to start with!!!

My sneaking issue is that, even though I loved my DRG, the "call of the taru" (BLM/SMN) was always strong for me. THM seems a little OP atm (@17 (so no Fire2 yet), but unlimited MP, basically), so ARC -> SMN might happen as well!
