Is there a PS3 guide on how to use the UI and play?Follow

I finally got the beta codes, and now I logged in before work today to make sure it was up and running and it was.... but I had trouble with the UI and thought it may have been a guide written up already.

Or is the NDA keeping these types of guides from being written?

I didn't see one yet, so if you all know of one that would be awesome.

Thanks!

You propose to read the manual before using social media to gather opinions?

Where do I find this manual?

The UI I'm referring to is the in-game one, not the PSN one, just to clarify.

Thanks!

So do you guys like the UI for PS3?

My initial reaction is that it's difficult to understand initially, but until I get into playing I don't want to make any assumptions. What's the experience been like for you guys?

Its weak. The chat system is querky, the targeting system is /weak FATE fights are very hard as a Monk, mobs are dead by the time you get up close to hit anything. Frustrating.

If you find out how to access the chat logs, let me know, thanks.

Oh wow, I hope they have enough time to fix all of that before launch.

Safe to say that a wireless keyboard through the USB slot on the ps3 will be quite useful?

I found this PDF manual for the Beta:

http://dl.square-enix.co.jp/ffxiv/download/manual/ffxiv_betamanual_en.pdf

It looks to be the same one shown in-game from the PS3. I was wondering to about an easy to access manual

Through pure button mashing I found out there is a gamepad mouse. Hold L1 + click R stick and from there it gives you access to the mouse which then you can expand the chat log, though I haven't tried scrolling up through chat but I would think you can. But I do have to agree, targeting on a controller has been tough. I think I'm starting to lean towards to gaming with a keyboard mostly.

Is anyone else having problems seeing the left side of the chat log? No matter how I fix my display settings, it gets cut off. Using the mouse feature only allows the log to be expanded, not moved entirely.

Not that I know of. It's very annoying. I don't have the luxury of switching televisions anytime soon.

I like the PS3 interface, personally. Targeting is a bit wonky but the filters help immensely. So far I have found everything I needed by reading the in-game pop-up help windows. Except for the mouse cursor thing to adjust the chat log size, wouldn't have figured that one out myself.

What kind of TV are you using, and how is it hooked into your PS3? More than likely you will have to change something in the PS3 options on the XMB.

I'm curious as to what you think is quirky about it? I have had zero problems interfacing with the PS3 controller and a keyboard. If you need to scroll up through the chat log, first hit select, then hit up on the d-pad til your cursor is in the chat window. Then just hit up as far as you would like to see. I use it all the time, because you highlight players names as it goes up, so inviting players straight outta the chat log is the easiest means. You can do this by hitting square if you're curious, when you've highlighted a persons name.

Targeting was pretty tricky in the front end, but I've got the hang of it now, and customized to my liking. One thing that I think would really help everyone that uses a controller, would be to switch your stick setting to whatever is not the default setting. There is Legacy, and I think Standard. One turns the camera without turning your toon, and the other turns both (which is the good one). It makes for aim targeting a breeze, and I no longer get caught targeting dumb sh*t that my toon is looking at but I am not. The whole targeting system has a learning curve to it for sure, but it's not alien once you take some time to find a setup you like. I feel like I kinda cheat the game, cause I almost never use left and right on the d-pad to cycle targets, I just hit O to cancel off target, then just turn my character to the next target and hit X. Or in the case of a mob dieing, just let off R2/L2 for a shade, just to hit X real quick then get right back to swinging.

That is for melee anyway. When I was healing, I would use the d-pad targeting the whole time. This is made simple by toggling on the option for custom targeting, allowing you to cycle target filters by holding L1 and hitting one of the face buttons (O, X, square, triangle). This gets rid of the frustration of cycling through tons of targets, and never landing on the one you're looking for.

Thanks. I have to try this. Target filtering I already have. My take on playing on PS3 with controller: I'm liking it. I'm now learning the fine points. For instance: the target reticle can be used with skills/spells before pressing X to select as the current target. I can move the target reticle on an enemy and activate Heavy Swing and that enemy gets targeted and Heavy Swing is applied at the same time.

What I'm really missing: hide the HUD with a button press (or at least a hotbar action) and screenshots on the PS3.

Nevertheless, an additional keyboard is not optional. I use a bluetooth keyboard and it works for me.

Thanks, I'll switch this next weekend and see if it helps.

With the chat window, I plugged in a mouse (and then my controller didn't work), and then resized (drag and dropped) the chat screen up and over to the right. So now I can see it all.
Querky:
HOWEVER, there is a DELAY in the chat screen, my /l post doesn't show up for a few seconds (I'll count it next weekened), so there is also the delay with /l response to me. So conversations in chat are not in real, real time.
I can kind of see it, like its just below the chat box.
There are 14 and 18 font size options, the 18 is too big, you'd really have to expand the chat screen and it then covers the UI hud thingy. I changed it back to 14. So wider is better.

I'd lover to be able to MOVE the HUD to the right so I can expand the chat.

Cheers!

I read through this, and it doesn't match up with the ps3 controller. It did have usefull information that everyone can
benefit from reading.

It's the exact same manual you can read from the login screen on the PS3.

The only difference I can spot is that circle and X button are swapped. This is the japanese layout I think, where it is traditional to accept with circle and cancel with X. I think you can even set this in the system configuration.
