Ul'dah. It definitely is the 'Bastok' of XIV. I've lived in NYC my entire life so I've always felt more at home in the gritty/metropolis type locations.

I can find things I like about all of them to be honest. They really put a lot of character in them as well as the surrounding camps.

I've only experienced Ul'dah, thus far. I wanted to start in Limsa, but my heart sank when I found I would have to start Ul'dah if I wanted to be a Pugilist. I don't dislike Ul'dah. It does remind me of Bastok, which was my home in FFXI, but I had my heart set on Limsa, and I didn't want to have to choose Marauder to start there. I plan on making Limsa my home despite starting in Ul'dah. I'm going to be taking up Fishing anyway like I did in FFXI, and I'm a Sea Wolf. I just feel like I belong there.

I absolutely hated everything about Windurst. So upon selecting ARC and starting in Gridania I was pretty concerned. But thanks to the Aethernet, the best town music (of course my opinion) and Tarus not being all over the place I like it. The outdoor area is cool. Music is pretty good too.

In 1.0 I loved Limsa but not so much now. I got lost repeatedly and the music was **** (to the point I muted the game music and just played THIS). Beautiful outdoor area. I can't remember the music in this area as I think I might have had the Bastok theme going.

Ul'Dah is cool. Easiest layout of the 3 I believe. The music was decent. Surrounding area reminds me of my beloved Gustaberg and the music there is solid. Seemed to have a lot of Taru NPCs - minus points.

Overall I'll give it to Gridania.

Ul'Dah is easily my favorite! It does have that Bastok feel which was my favorite in FFXI and I think it has the best music of the three. The only downside is that I can't play my LNC there. Gridania is my least favorite but is the host city for the main class I want to play. The music sounds like I'm in the Shire...this is Eorzea- not middle earth and the NPCs are as annoying and elitist as the were in San Doria. Limsa would be a great starting place if there were more class choices though I think it's the most aesthetically pleasing.

Windurst > Gridania

Windurst had the awesome music, and the personality and culture of the Tarus was very charming. I also just prefer the layout of Windurst.

It does. In fact, I see a lot of XII influence on ARR. Which is a good thing because XII's world ruled.

I'm a sucker for forest and snow/winter towns in my RPGs. Gridania did not disappoint. Now I don't play a lot of MMOs being mostly a console gamer, but why do they seem to never have snow/winter themed starting cities?

Wasn't the Dwarf starting city for WoW in snow? Well not really a city, more of a camp, but you started there.

I would love it if this game had a snow town to start in. For some reason in RPGs snow areas are found further in the game at higher levels. It's an overused paradigm that would be very refreshing to make it a starting point for once.

Yea you are right it is in a snowy area I believe so. I also remember that when I was doing the "For the Horde" achievement and we were running towards the dwarf main city we passed a lot of snow.

Also lineage 2 dwarfs main city was in snow.

In Guild Wars 2, the starting area for the norn is snowy, too (and actually my favourite of the five). So it's not unheard of, but still pretty rare; I'd love to see more games giving up on the snow = higher levels thing, too.

Gridania has always been my favorite city in XIV. I've always liked areas surrounded in green, so it's only natural that I love Gridania.

Correct the Dwarves, and Gnomes begin in the Snowy mountains of Dun Mouroh (sp.) Ironforge lies at the heart, and the lost city of Gnomergon (sp.) lies to the West.

I made my 3rd beta character today and started him in Limsa; I completed the main story line in Gridania and Ul'dah already. I think LL is my favorite so far, but it's a tough choice. Limsa wins for me because I love the scenery around the city, and I think the vistas from inside the city are stunning. I also enjoy the ocean vibe and the colorful piratey characters. I'm not a huge fan of the city layout though; it's the only aspect of the city that I actually dislike.

After this weekend, I've finally been to all three cities, and I have to say my initial impressions of Ul'Dah being my favourite were spot on. There's just something about the city and the desert surrounds that I really love (and, yeah, it does remind me of FFXII a bit, which doesn't hurt).

That said, I also really liked the surrounding areas in Limsa Lominsa, which I'm happy about, considering I'm planning to start as an Arcanist and will probably be there for a while.

Gridania with Ul'dah second. All the cities are so alive now. They were so barren in 1.0.

Ul'dah but Gridania is closing in fast. I love Gridania's little touches like the amphitheatre.

I started in Gridania and am partial to the woodsiness of it and its surroundings. It's hard not to like the others though either.
