Your Sleep spell stops Cold (or stopped in XI)... just about anything not immune, including many HNM ( when Sleep is sealed first) Just about any Char in ballista... from keyed-up states, likely having received horrible injuries, only recently Cured...
Why should a tiny tickle of poison prevent a Sleep spell capable of overcoming all of that battle activity in one fell swoop?
Now if there was instead a threshold of damage that once the poison hits it, becomes intolerable...
Like that too-hot bowl of soup you pull out of the microwave, and realize about 10 steps away that you REALLY should have had potholders...
