Hello, I am a relatively new poster of sorts to this forum. Im not new to Zam though. I had a different account when I played years ago on FFXI and was active back then, but its been a really long time since I played that game and original Everquest. I remember the communities you had on those games and it seemed like they were the best all around. The games had their flaws and they were glaring but the game was very enjoyable based on how tight everyone was, and reputations grew quickly. Good or bad, you knew who they were generally with new players always being welcomed. After those games I played a multitude of different mmo's including WOW, Aion, GW2, and most recently SWTOR. I have aspirations on trying out both FFXIV: AAR and wanted to play the original whenever it improved. Im also considering TESO whenever that releases as well. I'm wondering how the community was in FFXIV before the servers went down. If it gave that feel of FFXI community as it was a huge incentive for playing the game vs some of the others that I played in recent history.
All of the games I played after FFXI, didn't have that community feel of progressing as a unit. Everything you did was solo and it was mainly because the only chatting to be done was to flame others, insulting and making stupid jokes constantly. Not to mention there was no real benefit to group unless to do a quick dungeon finder, and most of the time it was people you had no idea who they were, and were never gonna see them again. Acting like a child quickly occured, ragequits and most of all, no one spoke if it wasn't necessary. You did what you had to do then peaced out. I played WoW for years and initially they had an okay community, but the more and more that went into the game, and the more annon it became. You sort of lost an identity over time and became a statistic. That being a WoW player. After x amount of expansions i'm finally done with that game. However no other game could keep me, I did like all of these games for some reason or another but most were missing a vital point that the older games had the magic of even if the general gameplay was lacking.
Another point was story line in FFXI. It had to be done as a community whether a group of friends, or as a Linkshell, You did them often and it was always nice to see the cooler parts to the games story and to eventually progress to points you had never experienced before. That is a major draw to me for this game I just hope to get to see it in action when the servers go live, or even beta perhaps if I can get in.
