Gear ProgressionFollow

Hey Everyone,

Hopefully some of you lucky individuals that have access to the Beta could answer a few questions I have regarding Gear progression.

Firstly, I played FFXI for about 3 years, and loved the depth of gear progression. I simply love the fact that you could invest time/effort into gear at nearly any level (ie: lvl 7 leaping boots, 14 emperor hairpin, 33 PCharm, 40 sniper rings etc etc. ) that would serve your character well forever, and immediately became a 'status peice', which told those around you that you were serious about your job/the game (or RMTing, but I digress).

With this in mind, is there anything similar in FFXIV? Or does it take the more GW2/WoW gear treadmill approach, that every time you gain 3 levels, your entire gear set needs to be changed and that once endgame is met, you do a series of progressively more difficult raids to get the 'next' tier of gear.

Part deux of the questions, has me wondering how transferable is gear? Once again, is their something like a haubergeon/hauberk available? That represents a large upfront investment, but will be best in slot for numerous classes & levels?

Gear is primarily class based aside from weapons. That means, for example, a piece of gear will be marked as "All Disciple of War" classes so any class under that umbrella can wear it. There are other pieces that are more restrictive. Weapons are almost always exclusive to a single class, due to the nature of the class system.

Most of your gear is upgraded as you go along. You get a choice at the end of many quests for whether you want a DoW or DoM class based gear, or the cash option if neither piece is an upgrade. There is an instant comparison of defense compared to your current piece, so you can glance at it and judge whether it's a worthy upgrade.

I've gone through 2-3 outfit revisions through level twelve, but I've only actually gone shopping once, and that was for the quest that required me to have on all level 5 gear. I needed a hat. Easy enough. The rest has all come through quest rewards.

I believe the dungeons give the equivalent of FFXI rare/ex investment pieces. There are no open world NMs, just ones available through levequests occasionally. I have no idea if they drop anything good or not.

Great, thank you for the well thought out and detailed response.

I guess my questions can't be accurately answered until we see what the new end game has to offer, and perhaps the FATEs/new dungeons.

It is quiet encouraging that gear is transferable across classes of a similar ilk though. Thanks again!

I think this is the case.

It probably remains to be scene, once the game goes live and crafters get rare"er" recipes, special drops etc..

I do hope it is like FFXI, one of the best parts that I remember from it..

I have a feeling that there won't be any PCCs or Kote type items in FFXIV. From what I've seen, everything is incremental stat progression like other current MMOs. You might find two pieces of a similar level, but one might have crit rating while the other has determination. This makes me kind of sad as I enjoyed that aspect of FFXI quite a bit. However this isn't FFXI so I suppose I can't complain too much.

Gear swapping is a hate/love relationship for me in FFXI. My inventory cries because of what you need to be really successful at a job, but the perfectionist in my loves it because it allows you to decide if X ability/action is worth building a gearset (or partial) for. FFXI's biggest hindrance has always been inventory issues considering if you really optimize your job then you're looking at 70-75~ of 80 inventory slots already used up for gear and that's pathetic. It's even more pathetic when they've never done anything to help alleviate this.

FFXIV's system of the armory chest each able to hold 25 items per gear slot is absolutely amazing. It's the best method of dealing with inventory issues with gear I've ever seen, and the irony of ....

"FFXI, a game built around gearsets to swap on the fly for every ability mid-combat, has a very limited inventory system."

and

"FFXIV, a game built around a standard gearset optimized on a per fight basis due to the inability to swap gear while in combat, has perhaps the most robust and easily expandable inventory management system I've ever seen.

...does not escape me in the slightest.
