Some advice for your keybindsFollow

I noticed many players are standing in one spot and shooting the mob with their bow the way we did in XI and 1.0, so I thought I'd mention something..

The way the controls are in this game mimic the industry standard right now and deviate a lot from the old way of SE. If you want to improve your survivability and mobility, the first thing you should do is drop your left and right turn keys and learn to turn with the mouse.

Unbind A & D from turn and rebind them to Left & Right Strafe keys. This frees up Q & E for abilities that require quick execution such as a Bind ability or a Stun. Using A & D to strafe you can now use the mouse to direct your character and never have to stop moving. Your left hand can now control movement and use abilities simultaneously. In the case of a class like archer, you can now Strafe away as you're shooting and kite the mob, resulting in 0 hp loss. I also unbind my "S" key and use that for abilities as well since Strafe+Mouse eliminates the need to walk backwards which is much slower than strafing.

For most of you MMO vets this is old news, but I thought I'd share it to help out the old FFXI vets that may not have spent much time with this type of control.

Cheers

*It feels weird at first, but once you get used to it you'll never go back.

That's what I did... but now... I have a controller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: I also wanted to thank, Mr. OP up there, too. That is good information, had I not wanted to do what I've been doing for... years... That does sound like a good idea and I would 100% try it. Thanks. I'm sure someone will use that information.

Np, I played MMOs with standard controls for a long time and struggled as a result of it in PvP and endgame. My buddy watched me play one day and said "wait, wtf are you doing?".. Best change I ever made to my play style.

This is what I did. Damn it FFXI you'll forever make me cursed to moving with numeric keypad and not WASD.

After nine years, I'm rather used to that, too.

I think I might give playing with the PS3 controller a shot, though.

I understand that WASD is standard controls for games that require mouse input to play. Well, I have wrist problems and reaching for the mouse every 5 seconds KILLS my right wrist. So I prefer the XI style because if you tinker with it enough, every single keybind can be plopped onto the keyboard someplace.

Also, I can control character movement and the cameras exclusively with the right hand. I'm still experimenting with the keyboards for the menus.

The "menu" can be accessed with + on the numeric keypad, but I remapped it to - on the numeric pad to match it. I put IJKL for the camera ala 1.0 and the cursor is the arrow keys.

I kept tab for targeting enemies, however, I'm trying to find a good key to map the target nearby PCs. Any suggestions?

Being I use the number pad for movement I have the NUM 7 & NUM 9 to target players and npc's. Not sure on how you play but if you use tab to cycle through monsters such as I do why not add a variation to it with using CTRL + Tab, or even would like to think you could even use SHIFT + Tab. Just my thoughts for you

I have a friend who used to cross his arms over the keyboard, using arrow keys with his left hand to move and actionbars with his right hand in the standard place on the left side of the keyboard.

Never seen anything like it before or since.

On PS3 you can use the mouse, keyboard and controller all at once.

The controller works very well for battle and running about (no strafing though). It's really nice to have the option to use a mouse during inventory/item management. All the drag and drop functions are spectacular. You can drag-and-drop the abilities onto your controller hotbar! They work together to give you even more options.

When I saw up-down targeting for party and left-right targeting for mobs, I actually cheered with joy. Woohoo!

I did not yet see a way to re-map the controller keybinds, which I very much hope will be possible in the future.

Having tried this, I have the following recommendation. Use the wired Xbox 360 controller.

Motionjoy is, I felt, an unstable 3rd-party program that can cause problems and frustrations. For example, pushing two buttons at once seems to confuse it. You may also see sticky-button type glitches that cause Motionjoy to just input one button repeatedly.

The wireless 360 controller turns itself off when you are busying in menus or taking a short break. In 1.0, you had to restart the whole game to get it to go active again. Or you could just leave it plugged into the charger at all times.

Therefore, having tried all the options myself, I highly recommend the wired 360 controller for playing on PC.
You can go to a website to download the support files, which will support your key-mapping in a much more functional and stable program.

Yeah I play TERA with the wired xbox 360 controller. If a game is built with controller support. It picks up the wired controller immediately.

That stinks! Maybe I can find another program.

99% of the time I'll be keyboard+mouse but for times I'm gathering or crafting or just being plain lazy it would be nice to use a PS3 controller as I already own one.

Buy one of these. It is an excellent controller that functions exactly the same as a PS3 controller, and even feels very similar. I used it a little for beta weekend and loved it. The only reason I won't use it exclusively is because I absolutely hate that you have to hold down trigger buttons to access your abilities. I wish it was just a hotbar that you could use the dpad to move through.

Not trying to second guess you BartelX but I hated that controller. Constant BSOD's from it's driver caused me to end up chucking it in the garbage. It's a shame because I thought the joysticks were a dream to use. I'm hoping for some new XIV branded peripherals once the game launches Smiley: thumbsup

I think once they actually give us some controller options it would be nice if there was an optional setting where just hitting R2 or L2 would keep that half of the hotbar open without needing to hold the button down. I'd also like an invert axis option for controllers. Other wise, I think the controller worked really well. I did notice some targeting issues, but I never went into the options and tried to adjust anything. I will be messing with it on the next test time though.

Wow, that stinks. I've had mine for 3 years now and never once had an issue with it. It's even been dropped a bunch of times and still works like a charm.

Well I'm glad it worked for someone, I even tried reinstalling Windows to rule out other drivers but every BSOD pointed to that controller's driver.
