Transportation questionFollow

in XI, we started out walking, made our way to Jeuno to get Chocobos, then eventually airship passes, with teleports and warps sprinkled in. Then they added the maw's as a transport method, which sounds similar to what I read about Aetheryte (sp?) in XIV.

My questions are;
1. Were Aetherytes the primary method of transport in v1?
2. Do teleport and warp spells exist?
3. What other transportation methods are announced or rumoured to be in ARR?

Thanks!

Wow a thread that isn't started by Poubelle... anyway...

1) Yes, sort of. Anima/Teleport was the main method of transport. You had 100 and it accrued 1 for every 3 hours in the real world I think... When you would use it would teleport you to an Aetheryte... the cost ranged depending on proximity to the site and also whether or not the site was registered as a favorite (you could have 3 sites registered). There was a command call Return which would instantly warp you to your Homepoint (basically, homepoint crystals from XI were also replaced by Aetherytes. You could also set an Inn as a homepoint).

In ARR teleports will cost Gil. Anima has been abolished. Expect the same sort of system behavior as 1.0 (teleport costs ranging in proximity to the Aetheryte, etc.).

2) Teleport basically became what I described above. Any character could use it at any time regardless of class/job. There's is no warp or warp 2 spell at the moment. Doubtful it will be added seeing as how Return basically replaces it. Return was on a 15 minute cooldown timer in 1.0 btw.

3) Right now there are chocobos, caravans (basically a chocobo pulled carriage that you can pay to ride so it's like autopilot mode; can hop off at any time), airships, ships... as for what we can expect in the future, a lot more. There will be custom grand company airships as well so {please look forward to it}. There are already railroad tracks all over Thanalan so you can probably expect a train at some point too.

Edit: There will probably be lots of new/other methods of transport added in due time. If XIV is indeed hearkening back to the old school games we might see a submarine... Yoshi has said he would consider sending us to space so we might see some sort of spacecraft again (IV; VIII).

There was also the aethryte network within a town, to quickly transport around if you had enough seals to unlock it.

Oh, right, and this was free to use as long as you had it unlocked. In ARR everyone can access these nodes without any precursory items and use 'em for free.

Another neat feature, Chocobo Porters!

Quote:
I wandered around the area a bit, exploring the area while eagerly awaiting the FATE that never came. I returned back to the nearest Aetheryte and noticed the Chocobo Porter NPC. I thought “oh cool, a place to rent Chocobos near Aetherytes now!” Yes, but not quite. The Chocobo Porter is a bit different from simply renting a yellow warker. When you rent a bird from a Porter, you select a destination (an area that you must have previously visited) and the bird will automatically carry you to your destination without the risk of attracting any enemies. You can disband the bird at any time while traveling to your destination.

Recently on the Developer’s Blog, they posted the below image. I can now tell you that the NPC there is one of the Chocobo Porters I described above. You can also see the Wayward Hatching pet in this image as well.

The link above has a pic of one.

I suggest reading that hands on, FusionX had the same experience I did (I missed meeting him by a day), and he did a great job of explaining a lot of the details.

FusionX did Aethryte Radio, right? Awesome. What about a shameless plug for your write-up? I couldn't find it...

The choco porters is an excellent idea if you want to get a beer while watching the landscape pass by.
Just as the airships in FF 11 were.

Exactly! And as a great professor of mine once said... "the slower you travel the more you see".

I haven't written my hands on experience yet, just my initial interview and impressions of the presentation. Or is that what you're referring to?

Porters are a great quick-travel option, so if you need to get somewhere quickly, and on rails it's great that they exist. Of course personal mounts will still exist, and hopefully so will rental chocobos. All things considered, there should be plenty of options.

This made me curious, are you able to be attacked when riding rented or your own mounts?

4 hours

Hmmm, I didn't see where they said it would cost gil. Could I have a source? That might actually give us incentive to travel. I'm slightly pleased Smiley: nod

Yes, your bird get's "lamed" if it incurs a certain amount of damage. I think the speed is reduced to our natural running speed.

Oops, well if you're talking about FFXIV any way. I remembered we were safe in FFXI.

From what I remember, you couldn't be attacked in 1.xx, so I don't think they'd change that in 2.0.

Wouldn't it make it the first time in FF history where riding a Chocobo wasn't completely safe?

You can get killed on a chocobo in FFXI as an encounter with King Vinegaroon proved to me. My shell was fighting it when I hoped onto a Rabao Chocobo, got teleported across the desert, and was subsequently eaten.

Noob question here since i haven't played xi or the old xiv, will airships work like the airships in WoW?Like you will wait for them to arrive and you will hope on them to fly to the destination and you will have a small loading screen before arriving there. Or will it fly you there in real time and not instantly.

I believe Yoshi said he was going to give us the option to enjoy the ride, or skip it. I'm not sure If he's going to follow through with that.
