Archaeology Tips And TricksFollow

With the Archaeology Profession still brand new, there are a lot of people who seem lost when trying to do it. They don't realize the grind that it's going to be, and that actually shaving a few seconds off a digsite in the long run can add up. This thread can be for Archaeologists to post any tips or tricks they have for making this long grind just a little more bearable for some.

Some tips for Archaeology that I've picked up:

1. Archy
Download the Archy addon. It adds icons to your minimap to tell you where you have found digsites before which can save you a survey or 2 when looking for your next digsite if it is obviously pointing at a site you've done before. It also has a nice list interface that you can use to solve your projects and see where your next digsites are at on top of your UI instead of buried in the Archaeology interface or on the world map. There is also integration with TomTom so it can point you in the direction of the next closest digsite, which is useful so you dont waste time correcting your path.

2. Teleports
Make use of teleports. This includes Hearth, teleport to uldum, teleport to hyjal, teleport to twilight highlands, teleport to blasted lands, teleport from portal in outlands to your major city outside of the blasted lands, dalaran ring-> caverns of time portal (if applicable), mage portals, etc... This can save you a lot of travel time if you have all of your digsites clumped on one side of the map and you are on the other. However, don't use this if you have a digsite close to you, it is possible that you finish that digsite, and another pops up between you and the clump on the other side, then you can do that one and you dont really waste time with travel. Unless your teleportation is free (i.e. mage) then go ahead and knock yourself out, but the rest of us have hearth cooldowns to worry about.

3. Skilling Up
Don't complete any projects until you are at 50 skill from digging (Changed in 4.0.6 used to be 100 skill). At this point, you will no longer gain skill points from digging.

4. Finding a dig site
I've found this to be a good measure of how to find a digsite while surveying.

If Red: Move halfway between your current position and the edge of the digging area. If still red, and pointing back where you came from, move halfway between where you are and where you did the first survey. Keep doing until you get a yellow survey.

If Yellow: Mount up (stay on the ground) and move in the direction it tells you until your survey cd is up. You should get a green at this point, if not move a bit further.

If Green: Go in the direction it tells you, but do it in a wide arch until your cd is up. Plop the survey down and trace between where the first one told you to go, and where the second one is telling you to go. If you put your second survey down right as the cd is up, you should still see your first survey, allowing you to easily see where they are pointing to.

In general, I've observed that a red survey means that the dig site is somewhere in the 180degree arch that it's pointing at. Yellow means that its somewhere in the 90 degree arch that its pointing at, and green usually points straight at the item you are looking for.

5. Finding the 85 weapons
If you are going for any of the epic 85 weaps, you can't find them before 450. Now that there is a cap of 200 fragments, you can't hoarde them and solve them all at 450. The best thing you can do now, and it isn't much, is to farm up 200 fragments, then solve your projects for that race as you get new digsites for that race, since it won't let you pick up new fragments.

6. Have fun! Try to have fun with it, and don't expect it to be a quick grind to 525. It takes a long time to do, and generally a lot of patience. It's pretty much a more interactive fishing (although with better rewards imo).

It's optimal to level to skill 100 before solving any projects, but as we all know, squeezing the last few points from any tradeskill recipe that's green and about to go grey can seem endless. When you hit 95, if you think you can't make it all the way to 100 (i.e. you get distracted by the shiny), stop right there. Don't even go to 96.

The reason is that since projects give x5 skillups with no variation, any points you get from surveying that are not an even multiple of five are wasted - 97 skill requires exactly the same number of projects to get to the cap as 95.

The lv 85 BoA gear is very rare, possibly 1% or less according to data compiled about Zin'rokh. The best way to farm for it is to level archaeology to 450 while not solving any troll artifacts, then stay at that skill level (don't train illustrious grand master because it will make dwarven sites in twilight highlands appear making it harder to farm troll fragments) to farm as many as you like. I'm planning on over 3k though i'm going to take my time doing it.

As a bonus, it's quite a fast way to level an alt. I chose my DK because he has a 20% increased mounted speed from talents and he is nearly lv 83 at about 285 skill.

Rest counts towards arch XP so be sure to have that maxed as well - just getting to skill 100 got me through the last quarter of 80, all of 81 and most of 82.

I'm a big Addon fan, and Archy was my addon of choice. It's not working for me right now, so I looked around for alternatives. Here's what I am currently using, and may just stick with it.

TomTom - I use this for the Waypoint arrow. I can find a far off dig site on the map and Ctrl-Click it to set a waypoint arrow.

Minimal Archaeology - Shows the artifacts you are working on, and a solve button for each.

SAL - I use one feature of this addon which is fabulous. It draws a dynamic hud border of the dig site, showing the exact bounderies as you move around finding your artifacts. It also will mark found artifact locations on the hud if you like. I turn off and do not use the lines and overlaying arcs of the addon, which I find simply a bother to utilize.

Perhaps you would find one or all of these a benefit. I find it makes archaeology a bit more enjoyable for me. Now, it the Tol'vir would just drop that staff...

If you're interested in going back to using Archy, there is a fan update available that fixes the bugs caused by 4.0.6. I love the addon and haven't had any issues using the fix. It's listed as a patch, but is actually the whole addon, so it's recommended that you remove your old version of Archy first.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Regardless, I'm going to keep SAL for the heads up display of the digsite boundery.

I'm not seeing the point of that add on - I almost never walk out of the dig area, the tool tip when you dig up the fragments now tells you how many frags you've got and it's not like its horrifically difficult or time consuming to click the arch window up while flying from one objective to the next and seeing where I stand for combining stuff.

I find it incredibly fun and useful to have a real time boundry on screen as a hud. When I fly into a digsite, I can literally see myself fly over the edge of the site. As with most addons, very few are must haves. As I said before, I like playing with them. It's just part of the fun for me. That's probably the reason I sometimes use my gps going to work, even though after being there since 1981, I already know my route.

Thanks Tellaria, I did try the version of Archy from WowInterface that you linked. Now I'm back to Archy for my overall addon, and SAL for just the HUD digsite boundary.

This is no longer practical because there is a 200 fragment cap on races now. I guess ideally now you would try to time it so that you are sitting at 200 fragments once you hit 450. This can be done by getting 200 fragments for the race then moving to another continent that doesnt have that race (probably outlands) until you hit 450, or just getting 200 and solving them as you get digsites for that race, keeping you at or near 200 the entire time, then once you hit 450 getting about 5-7 instant solves in.

Pretty much the way to do it - not much of an edge really from what I've heard about the drop rate of the thing but every little bit helps.

I'm confused, the OP says you stip getting skillups from digging at 50, but then others say to not start solving projects until 100...

Then how do I get from 50 to 100?

NVM, I see that 4.06 decreased the cap on digs from 100 to 50.
