Hey everyone. I have an 80 prot warrior as an alt, and I'm having a hard time choosing professions. He's currently a miner and skinner, but since the LFD system came out, I neglected to level it up as I leveled up. I want some professions that are decently beneficial, but I'm not looking to min/max. I'd like to make some nice gold as well from the AH, since I'm not sitting on a lot. I also don't have a lot of time to invest into camping the AH since school is coming up, so I'd like to just drop it in the AH without having to log on during lecture to undercut the person who undercut me. I've narrowed it down to these choices:
Mining/JC: Make gems for myself and sell the rest on the AH and make lots of gold. But it seems like everyone is a JC these days, so I'm not sure if there's space for me in the market. Plus, I'm not sitting on a lot of gold between my main and alt to power level it (I hear it's pretty pricey). And my server is notorious for undercutting (even my guildies undercut one another -_-)
Herbalism/Alchemy: Make potions, elixirs, and flasks for my toons. Get an extra hour too on flasks, woo! Herbs sell pretty decently on the AH I hear, as do the flasks. But again, a lot of people out there are alchemists. Is there really space for me in the market this late in the game? And will I need to camp the AH, or is this one of the safer professions where I won't really need to worry about it? I ask because I haven't heard of AH camping for an alchemist.
Herbalism/Inscription: I'm torn on this one. Good things are: it's fast, cheap, and easy to level. The vellums help my enchanting on my main. People always need glyphs and they sell well. Has the potential to make lots of gold. Bad things are: I've read I need to spend a lot of time running back and forth between the AH and mailbox. Also, once people have their glyphs, both major and minor, for both main spec and off spec, I just lost a buyer. The darkmoon cards are also way too iffy to try and make gold off of that alone.
Skinning/Herbalism or Mining: I could just keep him as a gatherer and sell the raw materials on the AH. I could just give whatever herbs needed to an alchemist to have my stuff made. It just seems like the skinning profession would be a waste. The passive buffs are nice though.
While writing this long post (this is the longest post I've ever written on these forums), I think I have may decided, or at least have an idea. Guess I just needed to see it in front of me in print. I'll sleep on it and think about it some more though. Still, any insight you profession guru's can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
