Lack of Thief Love.Follow

#1 Aug 06 2005 at 5:11 AM Rating: Decent
After playing FF for over a year, I thought it was time I step upto the challenge and not play a cookie cutter job. I wanted to see what it felt like to seek for five hours without invite. To accomplish this, I took up Thief.

The first thing I have to say about thief: I love this job!

I mean, where the hell have you been all my life? Thief is one of the best damage dealers I've played! After the recent update, dare I say, Thief is on par with Ranger damage wise. At level 37 I'm SATA+VB for 500 + 200 Distortion. Whilst dual weilding two Daggers and hitting for 15-20 per dagger.

After taking NIN and WHM up high, I notice whenever there is a thief in my partys, the party always moves faster. Granted their Damage per hit isn't as high as some jobs, but I'm yet to see a job who can compare in their Weapon Skills [including SATA].

I find it amazing that Thief aren't getting invites for hours on end, when they can roll off an amazing WS with amazing damage. Leveling up ranger months ago, Piercing Arrow, couldn't even do a fifth of the damage SATA+VB is doing now. After the last update, let's be honest here, Slug Shot really isn't all that anymore... Saying that, I can't wait to see what SATA+ Dancing Edge brings me.

The only reason I can see Thief not getting invites, is because many of the people who play it.. don't play it well and have given the job a bad name.

Other than that, please inform me. Why is Thief not getting any love?

Hey Conno, what happened to you last night?

I managed to get back, took a few minutes though, after POL crashed rather nastily and found you gone ; ;

Personally I like having a THF in my pt - from a mage perspective SATA is great, as WHM I can heal more without the mob coming at me and as BLM nuke a little more.

Hehe I also like to pt with DRG too - I'm not in to cookie cutter parties (just cookies, mmm lol), as long as the basic roles are covered and the people know their jobs that's great.

People, if you see Conno lfp and you could use a THF invite him, cool player :D

Hopefully we'll party again soon Conno and hopefully I'll have Erase by then ;)

I'll be on to EXP today though ^.^

I have a bud who's 71+ lvl thf. He approached it the correct way, makes sure to have all the right equipt/items. But there he sits in Jeuno. Yet sometimes, when the stars are lined up, he'll just log in and get an invite.

Tamandra, hit the nail on the head. Nothig wrong with a lil SATA Hate (unless the tank is sub par). G'luck to ya Conno!! Bringing the love back to a class is tough, but doing it one party at a time will help... Sux that 1 or 21 bad apples spoil the pie for awhile.

WOOHOO!

Finally some DRG love!

Beldin gives Sasavi a snausage to celebrate

As it is, I've seen an influx of DRGs in the dunes. Luckily, I've found my way to solo so I don't worry to much about competeing for pties.

Why do THF sit around in Jeuno waiting for invites? Because 80% of THF don't put out 500 + 200 damage via satavb and distortion.

That's the facts.

I had a THF doing barely 250-280 per satavb in an onzozo party the other day.

I recently took to levelling DRG - although it does seem in danger of becoming 'the next big thing' quite simply I've always wanted to level DRG, I took it to 13 a while ago but after bad experiences (I mean more bad experiences than usual) in the Dunes I left it on hold but it's always nagged at me ever since.

Finally, after the update changed the amount of EXP for EP mobs, I decided the time had come, so now I level DRG/WHM (usually solo unless someone I know and like asks me to pt and I have enough time) during the week.

Well, getting back on topic, tonight I went out as WHM 36 to get some exp - our pt was NIN/WAR, WAR/NIN, THF/NIN, DRG/WAR, SMN/WHM and myself WHM/BLM *gasp* no BLM main lol (except for my sub but I stuck to healing mainly and conserved MP when healing wasn't required so we could chain). We did pretty well, the only thing holding us back were the usual problems of Crawler's Nest - links, dangerous mobs being zoned etc.

Thanks to SATA the mob rarely looked away from the tank, even when the DRG put in big hits or if it scored a critical when the NINs shadows were down and I had to do some major curing.

having played thf, with top gear even, i have to say that past 50 it just isn't as fun because the numbers start to dwindle,before that i had a lot of fun on the job.

"I had a THF doing barely 250-280 per satavb in an onzozo party the other day. " if he was lvl59 in onzonzo, thats why, his lvl was to low for that zone, if he was 60, his Viper bite damage isn't the issue, it's his comple ignorance to not use Dancing Edge. And I don't belive thives are that bad, I hate to admit it, but I think you made that post up. I'd like to add, as a war/nin, I prefer thives sub warrior, I can pull for them since I have shadows, and their weaponskills are far more powerful.

when I am opening light, my prefrence is.

THF/WAR > DRK/THF > THF/NIN

Thf/war can keep up with my tp, without a problum, drk/thf is most powerful, but I out tp them by quite a bit, thf/nin's WSs are so much weaker, I'm not opposed to parting with them, I just it's a notiably smaller skillchain. (as for dragon kick, I've haven't been in a party with a monk for so long, I can't even rember what their name was.

if people fought things that you didn't need to use sushi to hit, /nin could be good using attack food like I used to be able to ; ;

I don't know what it is.. but every single time I post on the rag forums, I get rated down. Oh well, keep trying at it-- never'll move this karma. Oh and if you can tell me why you rated me down, always love to know.

Quite a lot of people don't understand that chaining VT mobs > some IT kills per hour. Thus, we end up having to buy expensive sushi instead of typically cheaper attack food. ; ;

9k to 66 and my Cermet Lance +1, though. I guess using sushi isn't all that bad when everyone is skilled at their job in the party. <_<;

EDIT: Wow at the rate-downs, just wow. I actually got to level 66 today... want to know how? My party chained VT mobs, the only time we ever stopped was when someone went afk or when we had to rest for a small period after the chain. It was about 5.5k/hr, which isn't bad at all. Um... by the way, can I be informed of why I was rated down? If it was a mistake, then I'd be happy to attempt to fix it for you (or you all).

A good THF will always be good by the way they play, less than what equipment they wear (and the same could be said for all jobs). If you want to level, then go for it, start parties, don't be content just sitting and waiting. THF is a fun job for sure and have fun with it.

My guess is that a lot of plyaers just don't want to bother with setting up a SATA formation. Anything more than just hitting the attack key and setting off WS's once in a while is too much for them to grasp. I'm not talking about everyone, of course, but I'm sure we all have been in some crappy parties like that.

I've also been in parties where I got yelled at for being bossy... Seriously, forgive me for trying to setup a suitable formation so that I can actually do the most dmg I can x.x And of course, if all the pieces don't come together and the thf doesn't get the SATA off correctly for whatever reason, be it the mages are pulling too much hate early in the fight or the first voker is idle briefly or the main tank doesn't get right behind the mob... whatever goes wrong it is easy to blame the thf, especially when afterwards they're literally poking the mob for insignificant damage.

And I too love dragoons :D They are a thief's best friend in Crawler's Nest, the perfect job for opening a Distortion SC ^-^

Edit: And of course there are bad thiefs out there as well, I'm not saying it's never the thf's fault.

THF is a lot better than people think. Personally though I kinda like THF/SAM at 60+. Super fast renkei and their damage really is in their WS. I partied with one once and....... wow. o_o;
I also know a THF that is capable of outdamaging other melee jobs with WS. She mentioned to me before that she did 1300+ damage while a DRK/THF did just ~1k. Not a bad drk either... has some HQ gear and everything. She usually does anywhere from 900-1400+ damage apparently depending on mob type, etc. This is at 75, mind you.

I like THFs with all jobs but BRD (if I have a PLD tank). With PLD tank brds don't like thf/ or /thf XD Since most do not know how to position themselves nor what to watch for (and still don't if you tell them). Positioning is very important to a brd. :x but... with my other jobs... I LOVE thf^^ And the new changes to thf over the last 6 months made thf even better.

Ever since level 62 I have had to build every single xp pt I've had other than 1 I've had at 70. I am currently level 71.
