PLD + NIN in 1 pt? YesFollow

Here's the story...
LFP in Rabao and a /t came up asking for party with the pt setup of NIN MNK WHM RDM. At first, I was kind of...confused, since I was a PLD at the time. I responded with "But why would you need a PLD when you have a NIN?". So yeah, some exchange in /t's and I accepted.

Full party with NIN MNK WHM RDM and RNG (and me too! the PLD o.o) and we set off. I agreed with the MNK to let the NIN main tank. In Kuftal: I ate a squid sushi (I'm a cook), wore a life belt, 2 rings that added +2DEX and +2STR, and a spiked necklace and let the taru go crazy. I didn't do too bad, sometimes critcal for 70 and hit as low as 10 (when the mob didn't Stoneskin -.-;;). Also, I came up with the strategy to Cover the RNG when she overdid her limit (later on, RNG just naturally went behind me for Cover, lol). SC was Piercing Arrow >> Raging Fist for Impaction, which did nice dmg IMO.

Later on our RDM d/c, and we wait 20 minute but eventually replaced her with a BLM. He came and we started xping again. What actually surprised me was that instead of questioning the 2 tanks in the same pt, he actually commented on how well we coordinated with each other! So....kind of felt he had the end of the stick with the last parties >.> . Near the end, when I was 700 tnl, the WHM had to go and a DRG came by /wave-ing to the RNG, so she asked him (DRG) to help me lvl up. Long story short, I lvled and the DRG lvled also, we port Altep and went our seperate ways.

Now, I could have been antsy at the start and rant on about why invite me when theres a NIN, but I didn't. I wanted xp like any other LFPer and adapt to the situation. Did I do dmg? yes. Did I whined over why I was being ghetto DD? no, it was quite fun actually.

Special Notes: 1) We chained #5 three times, if I recall correctly. 2) NIN was main tank, remember, so little downtime on MP. 3) We had a RNG >.> so dmg was top-notch. 4) We had a MNK, so dmg was even better :P . 5) No one punted me.

Shout out to Ewelina(NIN) Seraphwalker(BLM) Desouled(RNG) Lostkitten(MNK) and WHM + RDM whom I forgot the names of ._. very sorry. Especially the NIN for not giving me a hard time but a fun time and an SC partner :D

(See you again!) (Take care) although we'll never pt again as a combo.

Hmm, In my opinion, it is wasting a real DD to take both PLD and NIN in a party. You can equip a NIN with a lot of accuracy, some strengh, and you'll get a semi-DD, and with the PLD tanking it would make a decent set-up. But a PLD will never be even a semi-DD. The pld hold the hate because of a lot of enmity gear, because of provoke, flash, and different job ability, but not because of his dmg. (Not that the NIN hold the hate only because of his dmg, but the dmg a NIN deals is an noticable part of his hate).

Thats why - in my opinion - it would be better to have the PLD tanking, and the NIN - equiped with a lot of str acc - dealing damages.

But even in this case, the NIN will not be as useful as another RNG MNK DRK etc could be. I'm not saying this set-up can not work, i'm just saying that if it has been working, it could have been even better without the PLD or NIN. In my opinion.

What I think basicly is both good nin or good pld must be able to handle the tanking, alone. You can allways equip a PLD in a offensive way, it still will be a PLD.

So yes, it may work, but i dont think it is the best way to get good and fast xp. And I dont even think it allow to get safer xp.

If you have a THF in party, and since a nin deals way more dmg than a pld, then why not 2 nin, but NIN tanking + PLD as DD I say definitly no ! :)

- Sorry for my poor english -

Cheer,

The Pld should have tanked and the Ninja should have been a back up, because the Ninja done right is suppose to be a DD...that is the way SE designed ninja in the first place.

We all know all that stuff guys... Even the the OP questioned it... He's just saying that although that isn't the "norm" it worked out well for that situation. Its not like he was searching, telling everyone he was a DD. lol I commend you OP for giving it a shot. You got your lv and from what I could tell, it all went smoothly. I would also like to say that the players in your PT are pretty skilled. I have pt'd with a couple of them and Lostkitten is in my LS. (good MNK) Anyways glad you had a good experience in a not-so cookie cutter pt!

PEACE!

Well, actually, SE probably DID mean for NIN to tank. There was a post awhile ago that came to mind, about a BCNM that had a Yagudo NIN that main "tanked" and I believe the phrase the poster used was "like nobody's business". I'm not 100% on it being this BCNM, but it seems right.

Now, I do agree that a PLD tank and NIN DD/debuffer is a great setup, based on how they look on paper. The NIN elemental debuffs that they have can spin the Wheel during the whole battle and super-charge the BLM or RDM's nukes to whatever needs it. When a NIN is main tank, they have to worry about Utsusemi and doing enough Ninjutsu damage to keep hate, that they would have a much harder time hitting the right debuff at the right time.

To the OP: that setup sounds really nice because of extra party saving abilities that you can use w/ the NIN's tanking and whatnot. Always nice to see a set up that isn't cookie cutter working and working well. :3

I'd rather have 2 NINs duo tanking than a Paladin and NIN pair, count shadows and take no damage other than AoE attacks that aren't blinkable. With the right equip Nin can be a very respectable DD.

One of the best parties i had in the dunes was -
Nin Nin Pld(me) Whm Blm Blm.

I was a worse case backup. We got chain 5 repeatedly. that pt was the only reason i got out of the dunes as pld. Ever given the chance i would do it again in a heartbeat.
So OMP just say no to cookiecutter pt.

NIN NIN PLD BLM WHM THF -
was a party i had in the dunes once. It was a great party Chain 5 repeatedly with very few deaths. Its fun to break the mold sometimes even more fun to know so much can change and actully work. So IMO a cookie cutter pt isnt always the best depending on people in the party. So maybe everyone should try new setups once in a while. Good for us all.

@Kamissa
While I do agree another DD would have been fantastic, this is what Lostkitten told me: she couldn't find anybody else, whether in our lvl range or a suitable DD. That means NO THF. Yes I could have tanked full-time but considering our -very- little downtime due to blink tank during first half of battle, I'm sure everyone in that party hoped it stayed that way. I did semi-tanked last half of battle, if our 2 DDs did their SC. Frankly yes, your right, but here is something else to consider: our RNG was taking hate from NIN like crazy with Sidewinder @55. Now granted she may/could have been killed at least once because she was tarutaru, but I did my best to work it out to Cover when she got hit. Oh btw, I was 5000/12000 when I joined and left the party lvled, that tells ya something about the party, even though it took 3~4ish hours >.> . But remember we had to wait 20~30 minutes to find a replacement for our RDM AND additional time and wait for him to come. :D

EXP was great, we chained #3 on occasion for 200+ (XP I got) and chained #5 for 210. Granted, it was taboo for 2 different tanks in the same PT to exist at this lvl (53-55), it took everyones participation for it to work, and they did it wonderfully.

Now I hear the replies are "I rather had 2 NINs" or "I rather had PLD tank", but understand your not reading the story but rather analyzing it and saying how it could have or should be. It's a story not to change anybody's view, but to tell someone happily of my quirky party that day.

Rate up to the OP!! Thats what I was trying to say in my post... We all know its not the "norm" but who cares... he didnt ask for advice about his pt, instead shared a fun experience he had... Please read the posts for what they are and not what you think it should be!
