Another season has started. I am pretty sure the only other people that were watching (or talking about it) last season are still around.

Guthrie is still around, unfortunately. She wasn't out of play very long. Luckily her and Rackham's stories are combining into something with some more action. Blackbeard will make their stories interesting.

I liked the Ship v. Ship v. Storm with Flint and Hornigold, and the bit in the doldrums, and am looking forward to some action at the blockade that is now set up around the island.

At least they're using Guthrie in a semi-logical fashion this time, using her knowledge of the island's politics and actually showing her being good at it. Given that up until know she's been portrayed as bumbling from one mistake to the next, that was at least a refreshing change.

Rackham's story looked like it was heading in an interesting direction, but now... Not sure at all. I was hoping for yet another clever Rackham solution to their current predicament, and basically got "help Vane escape whilst I run off and exit stage left". I know that he and Bonnie *should* play a greater role in this but at least right now, it looks like they're trying to disappear. I'm sure some twist will draw them back though, but I honestly wish it had played out more as choice rather than circumstance. I've actually found Rackham's plotting and scheming to be one of the more fun aspects of the show, at least with regard to politicking on the island itself.

Loving Blackbeard. But then, I can't help but see him as Pullo, just set in the age of pirates. And with a beard!

Yeah. It was a decent way to set up the problem with dealing with the English Navy without Flint to help out. I get the need for the drama stuff between Flint and Silver, but it seems like every season they have to do this up/down thing between those two. Not sure if it's fun because it's them being them, or getting boring because it's the same thing again. Kinda torn on that one. Also, some part of me thinks they're dragging out Flint's whole malaise thing a bit much. For a character they've made a point of making into a pretty legendary badass, it's a bit jarring to have him basically falling apart. Again, I get it from a character development point of view, but I'm not sure it really works well. Have her be pissed about it. Act irrationally about it. But having him basically giving up, and just continuing because he's going through the motions and doesn't know what else to do just seems a bit much for him.

And frankly, I'm not sure where they're going with the whole "island of escaped slaves" thing. I mean, I think I know where it's going, but it does seem like yet another thing to throw in out of left field. I'd kinda rather they had stuck to introducing Blackbeard, and then having Flint return, and have them have to work together to defeat the English. Maybe less depth to that storyline, but much more action. And let's face it, most of us watch the show because we want to see pirate action. We'll see what they do with this. One of my critiques of the series is that they tend to set a main plot, and then spend most of the season dealing with side stuff that gets in the way, with the last couple episodes finally addressing/resolving the main plot. This whole bit seems like another one of those "we need to have them stuck doing something else for 6 episodes before they get back for the big conclusion" distractions. Which wouldn't be a huge problem, except that each season they also more or less have everything else sitting on hold or spinning in circles until Flint's storyline reaches the right point.

This season at least doesn't seem quite as bad about that. Suppose it depends on what developments actually occur back on the island.

I liked watching Rackham's schemes. But in the previous season, that made up a small part of his on screen time. The rest being Bonnie and Max stuff. Which, while I like me some boobies, was pretty boring, especially relative to some Pirate on Pirate action with ships blowing up cities.
