In retrospect, it's a lucky break for Flint that the handful of Walrus survivors included his quartermaster/accountant, ship master (DeGroot), cook and armorer (though he got Bonny-ized last episode) and only no-name cheaply replaced pirates died instead of the expensive specialists Smiley: grin

Oh, and I was happy when I saw that Scary Dentures Pirate survived as well.

What was up with the episode being only 50 minutes long? They needed an extra 10 minutes to pimp out the Outlander series to the Black Sails audience?

And... How did Vane and his crew get to Charleston/Charlestown, stalking Flint's anchored ship, without a ship of their own? Did they take swimming lessons from the Cubans?

Ha! I was wondering that myself. If they were following Flint (who left immediately after securing Lady Ashe, it seems) then you'd think they would have been spotted. At least next week promises Vane's pirate-lumberjacks fighting the crew of the... umm... Spanish warship that I don't think anyone ever bothered to name. Last week's episode was so dull no one even posted about it. Did you know they didn't show a single ship that episode? And Rackham must have gotten the day off that week. I see that Bonny got to stay home in her pajamas this week.

Hey, Hornigold! Free fort! Really, Rackham should have nabbed that. Between the brothel and the fort, he could have owned 50% of the Nassau sets. We're coming after the tavern next, Guthrie!

I assume that Starz would really appreciate it if you'd watch Outlander. Look, it had old-timey people with flintlock pistols and roguish characters standing up to the British! You guys like that sort of thing, right?

So, I guess Fort Sumter doesn't exist in the Charlestown area around this time, right? I think it was built in the early 1800s, and this takes place during the early 1700s.

I grew up in Charleston, and just remembering going to Charlestown Landing each year or a field trip, going and seeing the Fort, and listening to the tales of how the State Tree, the Palmetto, had wood so soft that cannon balls stuck in the wood rather than shattering through. But I think that was all during the Civil War, and I'm not 100% sure how accurate those tales were or if they were about Sumter directly or just the wood in general, it's been some 25 years.

Started construction in 1829 according to the Wikis.

So Flint was an exiled gay/bisexual naval officer, Vane a former slave of some sort, Billy in a press gang and Anne an abused early-teen wife. I'm sure someone out there got into piracy just because it sounded better than working for the man or because shooting people for money seemed like good times. I wonder what set Dufrense on the road to pirate-accountant. Aside from the obvious...

I'd imagine Rackham may qualify for the "it sounded better than working for the man."

And the former Ned Low would have qualified for the "shooting people for money seemed like good times."

So that last episode (and the promise of the finale) almost makes the last couple weeks of pirate-yapping worthwhile. Except that I think Scary Dentures Pirate died. But Chinese Pirate lived. Silver's plan was sharp while it lasted -- I guess now they'll wish the boat was working if they need to beat a hasty exit from Charlestown.

RIP Mrs. Hamilton-McGraw/Flint. You were infinitely more exciting in death than you ever were in life.

I realize you mean a different kind of relationship but I'm putting money on a Flint/Vane odd coupling trip to save Ms. Guthrie next season.

The headshot took me by surprise.

During the Silver scene, when he stared at the dead Randal, part of me expected him to realize Randal was faking it (hid when he found out they were being attacked originally) and still alive.

Looking forward to Vane/Flint kicking some Charlestown Noble *** though. I wonder if Rackham will acquire the gold before the end of the season? Season ends with Rackham and Bonny on a ship full of Spanish gold, and Vane/Flint on the Man o' War on their way to save Guthrie.

Yeah. Didn't see that coming. Works though. The show couldn't actually move in the "going legit" direction, so this provides an "out" for that, and puts Flint squarely back in "scourge of the seven seas" category (ok, maybe just one sea, but whatever). Ironically, they've ironed out one conflict (well, sorta, I don't think Flint and Vane will ever be best buds or anything), while basically tossing like 3 other factions and plots into the mix. Rackham and Bonny are trying to steal the gold. Silver is secretly in on it. Guthrie is trying to stop them (violently, as it turns out), but fails. Then gets captured by an odd alliance of folks selling her for a pardon (didn't see that coming either). Oh. And there's still the whole "Vane killed daddy Guthrie" bit. Which Flint doesn't know about... yet. At least it's more interesting than spending 6 episodes getting a ship off a beach.

Given that Flint, Bones, and Silver are all characters from Treasure Island, I'm going to guess that at some point they get the gold, then bury it on an island somewhere. Now, how they get there from here is a whole story in itself.

Max's face at the end was all [Pam Poovey] Sploosh! [/PP]

The episode did not disappoint. Had to feel for Silver despite it sorta being preordained by a higher power (aka Robert Louis Stevenson). And it looks like next season will include Blackbeard!

Max couldn't hide her excitement. Of course they just got two ships full of Spanish gold. Poor Silver, had to grow a heart and not give everyone up for himself. But now he's a real pirate. And Vane and Flint laying waste to Charleston was great.

I'll admit to only having read Treasure Island when forced to in early schooling. I've seen a few various re-tellings on film and video. Silver, Billy, Flint. But is Vane a character in it? I don't remember his name.

I am wondering if the final scene between Flint and Silver, Flint knew the truth. But couldn't touch Silver because of his new found position in the crews' heart. And Silver knew Flint knew.

I never knew her last name. Now I do.

Edit:
Is it strange that Silver got a bit of a heart there? He's kind of ruthless in Treasure Island, no?

I assume Flint knows, based on his incredulous "...and he told you this?" remark. But, as you said, Silver was very popular with the crew at the moment (plus Flint killed his quota of quartermasters last season) and Silver knew who had taken the gold.

I'm surprised that Rackham could get the Walrus seaworthy that quickly. I know there was a time lapse in there (while the Spanish Warship With No Name) was in Tortuga but the Walrus was pretty messed up.

Speaking of, I think this is the first mention of Tortuga the entire show which I thought was surprising but Wikipedia says that the golden age for Tortuga as a pirate haven ended in the late 1600's.

In the preview for next season, Flint's head is shaved. No more little pirate pony-tail.

I don't think it was the first mentioning of Tortuga, I remember hearing the name dropped a once, maybe twice, in conversations. But it did seem to be the first time it was used as a place they had actually been recently to or were going to soon.

Edit:
I believe it's mentioned in the beginning of the season when Low approached Vane in the fort, and was talking about how there is one person you don't mess with.

Every time I hear someone say Tortuga I think of Michael Bolton... and I remember thinking of that a couple of times during the series.

It could be that they were trying to stick to a real timeline of Piracy, as you mention Tortuga not really being a destination for Pirates this late in the game. Or instead the writers were making a conscious decision to distance themselves from PotC similarities.

I'm no doubt influenced by the fact that I always used Tortuga as my base of operations in Sid Meier's Pirates! But I usually played the 1640 era so my timelines are off.

Vane is an actual historical pirate. As are Rackham and Bonnie. And Ned Low (who's death in Black Sails requires some significant liberties with history) was as well.

Well, ya, but I meant where they active characters in the Treasure Island?

As for historical liberties, I'm pretty sure that Low's death is a drop in a bucket of them. Also given that many of the truths are from stories, it wasn't exactly an accurately documented period or people.

As far as I have read, Rackham and Anne Bonny weren't quite the life long partners the series makes them out to be. In the series, they were together ever since they were 13. But really I don't think she met Rackham until she was something like, 19. And it doesn't appear to be him saving her from a life of childhood rape. More them both having an affair and skipping town together after her husband finds out and demands punishment.

Speaking of historical and book based information. Silver is married to a black woman who he has handle his money... Guess we know what Silver and Max are going to be doing here in the next season or so.
