Kitty's magic time travel power annoyed me, but that Wolverine survived being submerged in the river made sense to me.

I know that drowning is his big weakness in the comics, but when you consider his powers in the movies, and modern science, it kinda makes sense. His mutation is rapid regeneration, and drowning is death by asphyxiation: brain cells are deprived of oxygen and eventually die. His rapid regeneration should restore the brain cells as they die, or prevent them from dying in the first place. Of course, you can argue that the lack of oxygen would prevent his body from regenerating new cells, but as it turns out, we absorb a lot of oxygen through our skin, and most running water (like that in a river) contains lots of dissolved oxygen.
