I received an MP3 player for Christmas and--having never really listened to much music before--I'm having a little difficulty filling it. Currently I have 75 songs, the majority of which are already from anime/games/movies. I was hoping for some suggestions that I may have overlooked.

A small provision, I prefer to listen to more iconic/recognizable/memorable songs. I would rather download the top1-3 songs from a series rather than the OST. I want to try and keep a "pure" collection where every song is something I really like and nothing seems mediocre to me.

To eliminate the possibility of a lot of redundant suggestions I'll just throw the whole list up here; it will likely be fairly sad, so feel free to snicker. To be clear, I'm not asking you to do anything ridiculous such as reading through the list and trying to match it. It's there just so you can think "Cowboy Bebop Theme? ctr+f 'tank'"

The theme song from Trinity Blood by Buck-Tick, Maximum the Hormone/Nightmare (they did the opening/closing themes for Death Note), anything from Gackt, Lucky Star OST (preferably the one in which the VA's do karaoke to other anime songs), Libera Me (from Hell) from Gurren Lagann.

hm.
It isn't anime music or linked to anime music, but I see you have some music from some video games. Almost every song from Anamanaguchi reminds me of old NES games from my childhood (as it should, as they are an 8-bit band).

For anime music. There is the opening from Samurai 7 and the ending is just as good imo.
And then there is Battlecry from Samurai Champloo.
These have been the latest anime I've watched/been watching :o

Oh and there is this. It is from the Final Fantasy Unlimited anime. I don't know what it is about the song, but I like it.

I'm a big fan of the Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt OST, but a lot of those songs probably wouldn't make sense unless you've watched the anime. The entire OST's in English, but the lyrics themselves are often about the show. Example. I really like that song, but unless you've seen the show, the lyrics can be awkward.

Hell, what am I saying? They're still awkward.

That said, I really like Scanty and Kneesock's Theme.

My suggestions.... I only included artist name because I feel that's the most useful bit of information. If I had to name anime with good openings/endings, it'd be Gintama, Bakemonogatari, and Record of Lodoss War. Probably my favorite soundtrack comes from Fairy Tail, but not sure if you'd really want any kind of bgm.

Brilliant Green
BUCK-TICK
Chiaki Ishikawa
Chiwa Saitou
Diggy-Mo
Does
High and Mighty Color
Kalafina
Maaya Sakamoto - she also did the opening to Record of Lodoss War
Miho ***************

Redballoon
Stereo Pony
Suga Shikao
Supercell
T.M. Revolution
Tommy Heavenly6
Suilen

Run Wolf Warrior, Run from Wolf's Rain
Strangers from Wolf's Rain
Steve Conte

Sorry for the long list, I've got nothing to do right now and ended up going a little overboard...

Stereopony has a lot of great songs, look to DTB seasons 1 and 2. Major I like some of the music there. Wonderland, Faraway, Ame Nochi Niji Iro. Nodame Cantible I'd mostly look at the openings Manazashi Daydream and Allegro Cantible Sound. Ookiku Furikibatte has good music for pretty much everything.

Does it need to be anime or game related music/do you have more of a description of what kind of music you like?
Iconic/memorable/recognizable is rather vague as just about anything from the Spice Girls to Pantera falls in that category.

As far as anime music goes my knowledge ends with Maximum The Hormone from the various Death Note songs and mostly just because their take on metal is so hilarious and well, only the japanese can do things like that.

If you like nice instrumentals and a sort of classical/pop blend of music try some of Yuki Kajiura's OSTs. Kara no Kyoukai has several gems, as does Tsubasa Chronicles, Pandora Hearts, Mai Hime and Madlax. I tend to download most of my anime OPs and EDs here if you happen to want a decent site. You need to sign up to download but it is free.

Edit:

Mezame by Kajiura
Aikoi-Fiction Junction YUUKA (Kajiura was the lead composer for all the fiction junction projects as well as See-Saw, and several others.)
Oblivious-Kalafina (Most Kalafina stuff I have heard is fairly good.)
Madlax OP: Nowhere
Unrelated suggestion Hekireki by Last AllianceScratch that it's on your list already.
Red Fraction by Mell
Rideback -Japanese Version- by Mell (original is in really really bad engrish)

Groovin' Magic - Round Table (from Diebuster)
Shoujo S - Scandal (From Bleach)
Uragiri no Yuuyake - Theatre Brook (From Durarara!!)

That's all I can think of right now, and xypin mentioned Stereopony already.

I keep forgetting to add that song to my Youtube playlist. Thanks for the reminder.

As for my recommendations(I may have misnamed some, tbh...using the Youtube description from my anime playlist and it may have been years since I've added them), and I'm just throwing out to you the songs I really liked in hopes you'll find something you like:

*Most, but not all, of these are from anime.
Beautiful Fighter - The OP from Shikabane Hime
Undine by Yui Makino - The OP From ARIA
Himitsu Dolls - The first ending from Strawberry Panic
Disillusion - First OP for Fate: Stay/Night
Unmei no Yoru - from Fate: Stay/Night
Work Guy! - End theme from Kamen no Maid Guy.
Hizamazuite Ashi wo Oname by Ali Project - Ending theme from Princess Resurrection
Forces - from Berserk
Still Doll - ending theme from Vampire Knight
Howling - Opening for Darker Than Black
Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai - Opening theme from God Only Knows, though I'd almost recommend getting the shorter version actually used for the show.
Aestivalis March - from Martian Successor Nadesico
Minna Daisuki by Buono - Second opening for Shugo Chara
Black Diamond - from Shugo Chara
Chizu Sanpo by kukui - 4th season opening for Maria sama ga Miteru
Aoki Flamme by Yoko Takahashi - opening from Pumpkin Scissors
Tooi Nioi by Yo-King - one of Gintama's many openings
Flying Humanoid by Shoko Nakagawa - OP from Occult Academy
Dango Daikazoku - from Clannad
Hide and Seek by Namie Amuro - I first ran across it on The Craft of War: Blind
Kick It Up by Paul Gordon - Digimon the Movie soundtrack

I have the nagging feeling I'm forgetting some of my favorites, but it's a start.

Edit: Remembered another one.
Nikopol - TTGL

Other than the Digirap, absolutely nothing.

He said trainwreck of a movie, but solid soundtrack.

I misread it too.

Which?

Rift. The short story is that it's a wholly unoriginal game, but while it doesn't try anything new and fancy to set it apart as a winner, it also hasn't done anything new or fancy to set it apart as a failure. It's a solid game with one of the most polished betas I've seen for an MMORPG. Little bit longer story.

I'm using the game primarily as a mechanism to socialize with some friends who are no longer in my physical proximity.
