I went to B&N last night to shop for people and came across a wall of Star Wars novels. I was a little overwhelmed at how many books there are nowadays. If I were to pick up a series, which would be a good start? I guess I'm looking at something immediately following Episiode VI for starters. Which authors do you like and why?

I love the Rogue Squadron Series by Michael Stackpole and Aaron somebody (to lazy to get out my librarything.com list right now). They are an amazing look at the post-battle by the pilots of the
I enjoy the Han Solo Trilogy and the Han Solo Adventure series that's pre-Episode 1 Han/Chewy.
For immediately after (or close to) you want The Courtship of Princess Leia. Followed by the Thrawn series. and then I Jedi.
I *hate* the Jedi Academy series, but the trilogy of The Jedi Academy goes long way in explaining the jedi. These are Jedi Search and Dark Apprentice followed by Champions of the Force.
The Corellian trillogy is a fantastic read and gives a lot of background into the Corellian history.
On the list of must reads, don't forget the The Black Fleet Crisis, and I Jedi.
I personally despise The Jedi Quest series, The Bounty Hunter Wars (Mandalorian Armor/Boba Fett ugh stuff), and the young/junior jedi stuff, but you might very well enjoy it!

Timothy Zahn's stuff is the best. Anything he's written is gold. His original trilogy begins with Heir to the Empire, and since that was some of the first authorized canon in the books, it's a perfect place to start.
I like Kevin J Anderson's storylines, but his writing itself leaves a bad taste in my mouth. He doesn't write on paper; he dictates his novels, and it shows in the quality of the wording. Borrow these from a library. Buy the Zahn books.

I agree with Lady catwho about the Timothy Zahn set, it was my FAV, wouldn't mind see'n sum of it as Movies..
New Jedi Order, there were a few DEATHS in that series, that almost made me quit reading the series althogether, include'n an Original sw char from A New Hope who was killed off.

The Han Solo books were a favourite of mine growing up, still need to track one down actually.
I haven't read all that many other SW books before the New Jedi Order series, which had its up's and downs to be honest. It ultimately was too repetitive and long imo, but some parts are very well done.
"Crystal Star" would still be my worst SW book, could be the translation I read but I doubt it. Seems to have been written for a seven year old, at most.
As for the latest new series, read the first book but still have to complete the second one, I doubt I'll read many more after that one though.

Zahn's stuff is the best, probably followed by Stackpole's Rogue squadron stuff. I'd also reccommend the Alan Dean Foster books, but that could be because i he used to come into the book store I worked at in college in Prescott, AZ and i am biased.
I'd say worst book is a toss up between "A crystal star" and anything that Kevin J "I can't write for ****" Anderson wrote. They were both horrible.
Though the R.A. Salvatore "I squished chewbacca with a moon" series was pretty horrible in its own right too.

Which Han Solo books? There was a set of three of them from the mid eighties that predated the Zahn books, and then there was a more recent trilogy about a younger Han. I actually liked both, but the older books were a bit campier and I think they've been out of print for decades.
There was actually a book written that covered some of the time gap between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, that featured Luke and Leia. I only found it in a library, never in paperback. I can't even remember what it was called. But it was along the same vein as those early Han Solo books.

The mid-eighties ones, I haven't read that more recent trilogy about him yet.
The 80's han solo books were re-released about 3 years ago as a 3 in one paperback. Also the Lando Calrasian ones too. I can go find the ISBN if you want to look them up. Have them on my shelf somewhere still I think.
