It it just me, or is the stuff in the children's/young adult section usually better than the adult fantasy? The children's books are often more simplistic and not as well written but usually I find them to be more fun and entertaining.
Does anyone else feel this way?

I may need to have more of a open mind, but I normally advoid childrens fantasy like the plague. I never read any of the harry potter stuff or eragon, prefering to read anne mccaffertys pern books and LotR.

personally i don't like reading childrens books, i need something more substantial to hold my attention.
the HP book where abrely enough to do so and frankly the last book was terrible.
I want to be entertained but it annoys me when i can pick blatent holes in plots.

Although I read the bigger names in children's fantasy, I don't tend to like it all that much. HP is fun to read, but for instance Pullman wasn't enjoyable.
It's incomparable imo, there's way more adult's fantasy, including more bad ones too then I suppose.

I don't mind trying anything. But once I start a book, I can't just put it down if it's horrible. So I'll continue reading it no matter how mind numbingly dumb it is. Except Sword of Shannara. I just couldn't take the pain of it any longer...

Yes. The childrens books are often written with less stupidity and more straightforward story arcs. While the wording is less difficult leading for "easy reading", the stories are usually well laid out and easy to follow.
But again, I won't read anything without a recommendation from someone I trust, adult or otherwise!

On topic though. I really have no preference if the book is interesting enough to keep my attention it could be written by a chimp with Tourette's. Eragon I enjoyed, as well as the Harry Potter books. I've been reading the Vampire Earth series by E.E. Knight which is also very good and much more adult oriented.
My version of childrens fantasy is to read Dragon Lance Death Gate Cycle to my nephew and niece
It puts them right to sleep and that imo is what childrens fantasy is all about!!

Nah, I've most definitely not found that. I did enjoy the Harry Potter series, but it doesn't even begin to fulfill me as much as, for example, Gene Wolfe's The Wizard Knight.
I like the young adult novels that arent by writers that arent writing conservatively. What i mean is when theres a battle, if they dont even mention violence in its uglier terms then it seems too fake. Also, the characters in some of these books are just too plain. I think my favorite book(s) right now is a trilogy i just read this summer. Fiends of The Eastern Front is set in WW2(both german and russian sides throughout) and is about romanian Vampyr(the way the book spell it, i think its how you say it in german or something). It has a good balance of detail to battles and talk but not making one or the other drawn out pointlessly or whispered :P
I'll read any of it. It's been a long long time since I found any book I couldn't finish. I tend to read alot of children's fantasy as of late so I can find books to challenge my 5th grade sons reading level :)

I don't know if it's considered children's books, but the Xanth series by Piers Anthony is my all-time favorite, it's so light-hearted and fun. :D
