So I'm looking to get a tablet in the next month or so, and would like peoples input on what they have, what they like, etc. This will be used for school/home. I'll be running various apps to help in my studies like circuit diagrams and whatnot and my wife will most likely take over its use at home for fakebook games and other nonsense.
Media tells me to buy a samsung. I have an aversion to apple.
Help

Also budget will be around 500ish unless there is some new super tablet that I wont be able to live without.

If you plan to do actual work on it, get one of them newfangled tablet thingies with a keyboard attached. I think they call them "laptops"

If you are set on a tablet, the samsung ones are definitly the way to go. The apple ones are made of dead baby orphan skulls and ground up kittens anyways. I'd reccommend at least the 10 inch one. on device hard drive space doesn't matter as much on them, because you can plug in a 32 or 64GB microSD card and increase the storage capacity. For tablets its all about onboard ram, and number of processors. the speed difference between the 1.2 Ghz and 1.6 Ghz dual core processors is very minor.

If you plan on doing any real work with it though, a laptop is the better choice in my oppinion. Much easier to take legible notes with one anyways.

Have a nice laptop already, your thoughts are pretty much the same as mine so that's good.
Also I think you're being to kind to apple.

The new Microsoft Surface tablet is sort of a hybrid. It uses the smart cover as a keyboard. I kind of want one.

The surface looks neat. But probably out of my range for now.

Well, it's probably not what you're looking for, but I have a rooted Kindle Fire that I love. For my purposes (commuting), the 7" tablets are perfectly sized: easy to hold, easy to wrap your hands around for any typing that you want to do.

It's Wi-Fi only, which may not suit your needs, but it does everything else pretty well. It's running Cyanogenmod 9. Browsing on Chrome is snappy. Thumb Keyboard or slide keyboards make writing pretty easy (I work on my book and blog posts on it just fine), it plays games well (Minecraft, PSX emulator, etc.), and it's obviously good for reading. Rooting is a must, though.

I suppose I could see going larger if I was doing more media viewing or artistic work on it. My understanding from when I was shopping around is that Samsung has the best offerings that aren't an iPad.

Were I in the market for one now, and could afford it, I'd be strongly considering a Surface.

Is that running ICS or Jellybean?

As others have mentioned, Samsung holds the top spot for Android tablets and I would agree if you're looking for a 10". If you only want a 7", get the Nexus 7 straight from Google. It's made by Asus and I have yet to hear anything bad about it.

Kindle fire 2 just got itself announced today too. haven't looked at the specs yet to see if its even worth a look, but given how cut down the kindle fire 1 was, i'm guessing not.
