I bought the game off of D2D and it downloaded just fine (though it took an hour).
PoL installed just fine.
It seemed to go through the process of uninstalling the game first. Apparently I still had the game on my system.
Now, when I try to just install FFXI (base game) it gives me the following errors right away after it jumps to the full screen installation process:
Error 2711. The specified Feature name ('EX567_ALL') not found in Feature table.
Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation
Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.
I contacted SE and they sent me to a page to update my Install Shield driver, but, when following the instructions, I found that the "file version" that I have is 12.xx... and the highest file version that has any sort of "instructions" on that page is 11.xx...
So I'm stuck again. I replied to their help email and hopefully I hear back, but does anyone know what might be going wrong? I'm not very computer savvy, but I can dig through My Computer and find files you point to and follow instructions.

What version of windows, I know that both Vista and Windows 7 update the MSI with windows updates, and am fairly sure that this also happens in XP. You could try to run the updates that way. Also the instructions to install the file from an executable will be mostly identical between versions, the only exception being if the changed the lay out or options available in the installer. Also I cannot find any information on downloading the MSI elsewhere from microsoft, and would not suggest updating it from an installer on a third party site.
Alternatively the solution is more easily found at this site if that doesn't work download it again as you download was likely corrupted during the transfer.

Edit2: Nope. Didn't work. AND I payed $30 for a "solution" that didn't solve anything. Now I have to go to work/class/hockey frustrated and try again tomorrow. :(

If you haven't paid for a registry cleaner yet try CCleaner, it's free. If a registry cleaner doesn't work try backing up your files and starting with a fresh install of windows.
Well, I figured out I'm going to take it a step further.
I'm buying a new computer.
I called SE Help twice, and they can no longer help me.
I paid $30 for a Registry cleaner that didn't help.
I have plenty of space left on my C drive, so that's not the issue.
It just seems that uninstalling the old FFXI that I didn't even know was still on my comp was what caused the problem.
Mine is about 4 years old, 32 bit (can't even use the ~6 gigs of RAM I have on it cause 32 bit only supports about 3.5) and I can easily afford a payment plan on a new one. I was toying with the idea of upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit or even Windows Vista 64 bit, but the cost involved in that is ridiculous, equaling about 1/3 of the cost of a new comp.
I hate admitting it, but Best Buy even seems to have the best deal, but I'll put it out there for the experts.
Computer I'm thinking of
I'll check back after work (so about 3 hours) and see what anyone's opinion on that new comp is. I'm sure I could build my own, but when I tried in the past it just got expensive.

Assuming the whole blu-ray deal wasn't a major selling feature on the HP (since I doubt I can find it for that price anywhere) I try to avoid HP like the plague, I have had to work on one too many to suggest anyone buy them. Dell has gotten better about proprietary stuff in their PCs lately and most of their stuff is upgradeable if you decide to do so in the future. Although if you really want the best bang for your buck I could suggest some part lists for you to build your self for around 1000 bucks that would have room to upgrade to the upcoming core i9 processors from intel and DDR3 ram etc.
I don't know exactly why but I have this hatred for Dell and thus would never buy one.

If you do look at Dell's line be forewarned that their sales change fairly regularly and can range from "You call this a sale?!" to "Holy sh*t a 3000 dollar laptop for 2 grand". If you manage to wait out for a good sale (they actually happen a fair bit) you can save upwards of 300-600 bucks on the same computer from elsewhere obviously somewhat dependant on the price range.
I dunno how bad you want this new computer but if you can hold out till mid-july there will probly be a lot of sales for students going to school in the fall from most vendors. If not then I hope you have good luck finding a good deal.

I had the same error and it wouldn't let me install the main game. After 30 very frustrating hours, and several calls to SE support, I was about to restore my computer and be forced to reinstall all of my other programs.when I stumbled upon this from a google search: Search: windows error 2711 and 1603 support. It took me to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 where I installed a fix it from microsoft, then I redownloaded the entire install from SE's site, (that's where I had purchased it). Much to my surprise it worked.
I don't know if you should do the same thing as I, but, I installed playonline viewer, downloaded from SE's site first, performed all of the updates for it, then I single installed just the original FFXI game from the list. I performed all the updates for the basic game, tried it out and SUCCESS!!!!! it installed and ran well. After configuring my game pad and a few other things, I backed out then began installing the Ultimate download which included all of the 5 expansions up to Adoulin.
