Apparently ID software wanted to port it back in 1990, but Nintendo ultimately said no.

I can kinda see why. I remember there were a handful of PC ports of NES games around that time and they were generally terrible. Back then very few people had a sound card which throws out any kind of music/SFX other than the boring PC speaker. I remember buying Mega Man for PC and it being absolutely terrible. It only had 4 bosses and the stages were just horribly made. I think there was a Chip N Dales Rescue Rangers which was equally bad.
