We have the Steam Winter Sale coming soon and Cyber Monday has passed... what is everyone hoping to scoop up this season? I'm looking for some ideas for myself and some friends, of the electronic variety. My wishlist for games is rather small... only Dark Souls II immediately comes to mind. Maybe some 3DS games... is there anything good besides Pokemon and Fire Emblem?

I'm interested in Far Cry 4 but doubt it'll see a decent sale this soon for Christmas. If Transistor ever hits 75% I'll grab it. Divinity: Original Sin and Wasteland 2 both got raves if you like isometric RPGs so I'll see how those look on sale. I liked Sniper Elite V2 (except for crashing issues) so I'd pick up Sniper Elite III even if it's essentially more of the same. Just needs to be cheap enough.

Honestly, between old Steam gift cards and selling the virtual cards, I have like $130 in GabeN Funbux so it's sort of silly that I'd demand 75% off on some titles before buying but I just gotta be me.

I'm looking for a deal on Far Cry 4, This War Of Mine and probably the new Assassin's Creed (yes, despite the bugs).

I'm in no rush to buy since I can't put down DA:I, but if the deals are good enough buy buy buy!

I think the only thing I'm even all that aware of that I don't own is Pokemon.

I called my sister to ask what my older nephew wanted for Christmas. Turns out he's trying to save up for a laptop so he can play Empire: Total War. Which, if I had to pick a game that would get a 13 year old to drop his Xbox controller and look into PC gaming, Empire: Total War would not have been it.

Unfortunately, my sister said she already bought him a laptop for Christmas. From Target. For about $170. So I'm sure it's a real winner. Supposedly she showed the guy the required specs for Empire: Total War and went from there. So I'm assuming it meets the minimum specs on paper and will play games like sh*t. She's not the sort where I'll get anywhere by saying "I bet that's garbage" no matter how diplomatically, so I settled for "Well, if it doesn't work out and you need to return it I'd be happy to help you pick out something else".

On the plus side, I can teach my nephew about the joys of Steam and Humble Bundles and other digital shopping treasures.

You win that bet. I had forgotten until you said it but she said "Acer" when I talked to her.

Because polacks.

I'm looking for a good deal on Shadow of Mordor....also I've still to purchase DA:I. I'm still getting a lot of mileage out of Diablo though.

I've had a Wii (U) on my xmas list for a few years now. It'll be there again. Again, I suspect it will be a wish left unfulfilled.

I talked her into returning it and investing a little more. More in the $300 range. Trying to find her a few links. I know she won't get a GOOD laptop for games even for $300-$320 but she can do better than that thing.

She was saying "I don't want to pay a ton for something he's just going to play games on" and I had to explain that "can play games on" is precisely the part that makes it cost money. If he was just going to write papers, you can do that with a pencil and notepad for $1.25

Back when I sold computers my insides would ache every time someone said that to me.

I think I steered her into returning it and getting this one instead. Which ain't no gaming machine but it's a hell of a lot better than what she had.

Why not a desktop? more power for low budget and less chance of breakage, esp. for a kid.

Out of all the TW games, he wants Empire? Really?

(A) He wants a laptop and that's what my sister is buying him.
(B) Without already owning a monitor, OS, mouse & keyboard, etc he's not going to get a desktop in that budget either.

Hey, don't ask me. I was as surprised as you. Maybe if one of those Total War Master packs go on a cheap sale, I'll pick it up for him.

Hey.... not all women!

Also that's funny... Empire Total War was just in last week's humble (sega) bundle.I already owned it, so I have a spare key if you want to pass it on Joph, just shoot me a PM. I'll have to make one of those dumb gift links but it should work (hopefully!)

In terms of things for me, I actually sort of want a laptop because I like to sit in the livingroom and play games and there is no way I am moving my monster computer for that... but it's pretty low on my list of priorities at the moment. I'll probably just buy myself some more nintendo eshop credit or something and maybe another pathfinder book.

In terms of the steam sale I'd like a deal on Wasteland 2 or Divinity Original Sin.

As for 3DS games worth getting:

-Fire Emblem for sure
-If you like RPGs the Etrian Odyssey games are quite fun, they also often go on sale on the eshop so keep an eye out
-Same goes for Shin Megami Tensai Devil Summoner Overclocked - even though it's a (very slight) remake of a DS game, it's often for sale on the eshop and it's a fantastic game and worth picking up if you like turnbased strategy.
-Super Mario 3DS, really great looking game, fun to play
-Pokemon games, they are just great if you like that sort of thing

Virtual Console:

Worth mentioning that the Pokemon trading card game (GBC) is addictive.

Questions on these two...

Does DS Overclocked have anything to do with the Persona series? I absolutely loved Persona 3: FES, and lamented that I never owned a system that played Persona 4. This seems like a great recommendation, thanks!

When you say "Super Mario 3DS" did you mean Super Mario 3d Land or Super Mario Bros. 2? Is the second one a port of the old NES game? Heck, is 3d Land a remake of the old game?

3D land, sorry Nintendo doesn't exactly make memorable titles. As far as I can tell (I am not exactly someone who plays all the Marios) it's its own game, I really enjoyed it, though if you can try to get it used or on sale cause it's not the best game I own or anything but definitely fun to do some levels on the bus or whatever, I haven't played NSMB2...

Devil Summoner is a fair amount different than the Persona series - first of all you only have battles when you choose to or as part of the storyline (so no dungeon crawling with random spawn things chasing you around) - and when you engage in a battle you are on a 3rd person grid based map (you enter first person view when you engage in battle with an enemy on the grid)

That said it's got a lot of the same elements, leveling up demons to use in your party, combining them, carrying skills across, etc. Lots of personality in the characters - it also has some element of choice in terms of if you do one thing you can't do another but not so much. The story is pretty interesting and engaging, I really enjoyed it.

Overall I like it somewhat better than Persona 3, although I loved the "dating sim" stuff in persona 3, in terms of battle mechanics Devil Summoner is better (as a person who really likes tactics style games and RPGs). IMO Persona is better in terms of getting to know the characters and forcing you to make choices whereas Devil Summoner is better in terms of actual mechanics of the battle gameplay.

Devil Summoner is also very frequently available on the eshop for around 15 dollars, which isn't too bad for a full console title (in nintendoland anyway)

Derp. It is Devil SURVIVOR overclocked not devil summoner...

Summoner is a remake of like a sega Saturn game. I never really got into it. Survivor is the one you should check out. Man this hangover is destroying me. 4 Xmas parties last week.

Well, my sister bought the laptop I recommended for her over the Acer so that's something at least. Plus Olorinus' gift of Empire: Total War and I picked up Civ V complete for $10 from GMG thinking he might like it if he likes strategy games.

Talking to him this weekend, he does indeed mean Empire: Total War. He says he has a friend who plays it and has watched a ton of YouTube videos about it. Color me surprised.

The only thing I haven't picked up that caught my interest was Shadows of Mordor. I'll probably wait until I've played through DA:I at least once more before picking it up.
