So I decided I've been wasting too much time looking for a good Rust server to play on. They are all pretty terrible and neglected, so I made my own.

I have basically copied all of the things I liked from some other servers while leaving out the stuff that made it less than worthwhile. Basically the server is set up as follows:

* Sleepers are on
* TPA commands (allow you to request teleport to other players)
* x4 rates on gathering
* Instant crafting
* Free for all death match arena for those who just want to PvP or practice
* C4 and grenades are enabled and craftable
* Fall damage is enabled to deter the use of floating bases
* /sethome commands will enable each player to set two "home points" pretty soon
* Airdrops will occur once per hour provided at least 4 players are online

For those who've never heard for Rust, here is the gist of it:

and finally our new server log in info:

Just copy paste the line below and enter it into the console accessed with F1

net.connect 217.79.179.84:28200

Have they added anything new to the game lately? When I played, the main issue (for me) was that once you got over the establishment hump, there wasn't much to do aside from make bigger forts and kill people. That and I disliked the rot mechanic. While I understood the value of it server-wise (so it didn't fill up with housing), the "You MUST play" aspect of it turned me off and is ultimately what make me quit.

Did they ever populate the map outside the main area?

I know there's a lot of hype around this game but I'm generally not a fan of paying for early access games. I'm not sure it's worth the $20 quite yet...

The developers of the game are more or less completely remaking the game and calling it the "experimental" version. Right now it's just a bare-bones recreation of Rust with better graphics from what I can tell. For now everyone still plays on what they call "Legacy Rust" which is the Rust as you remember it.

Nothing has changed or been updated in "Legacy Rust" in the past 8 months or so I think, so I imagine it's just how you left it. However, there are always people making and updating mods/plugins for the game that can ultimately change how it can be played. I'm actually considering using the Clans plugin we have to create a large scale Red vs Blue type scenario between everyone who joins, whereas each person must decide which "faction" to join.

For the most part I am keeping the server between people I know, friends, friends of friends the like. I am not going out of my way to attract hoards of unfriendly randoms, though I do expect some to join from time to time, which is fine. I am counting on the rot system to slowly clean up abandoned buildings, but I can regulate it so that it causes decay at a much lower rate, or I could turn it off entirely.

Same here. I refuse to play early access games on principle.

Rust was enjoyable for the time I played it and is "worth" the $20 if a couple weeks of enjoyment can be valued at twenty bucks. I think I played 70 hours? But it does suffer from an abrupt ceiling where the initial survival challenge thrill is gone and you've researched everything, explored everything, own all the guns/armor and now it's just wandering around and killing other dudes or being killed by other dudes just 'cause that's what's left. So then you either need to be in a clan to go kill other guys or else you get attacked by five guys who'll kill you for kicks.

There's nothing wrong with playing a game where you kill people for the lulz but Rust didn't have an especially robust FPS mechanic to it so if you just wanted to pwn n00bz there's better choices. The first 30-40 hours of Rust is probably the best value for the money, then it tapers off. I assume that's why they're rebuilding what the game.

That said, I'd play again if a group of Zam folks were playing on a server but I don't think many people here own it. The usual two-week burnout we have for games would fit the enjoyment half-life of Rust almost perfectly.

Well, everyone here is certainly welcome.

As for what you said regarding the first 40 hours or so being the best-- it seems like most servers will periodically wipe everything clean and make everyone start over. Almost every server does this, actually. One of the main reasons I made my own server was because I was tired of starting over, personally. Right now I am starting over one last time and gathering all the blueprints and such again, even though I have the power to give myself all of those things.

I feel that with the right mods/plugins, and a bit of imagination, the game could become more than a seek and destroy killfest. I'd really like to see how the server develops over a long period of time without starting over. I will be removing inactive buildings and towns, but I'm hoping eventually there will be at least two large rival clans fighting for dominance.

This game has changed a lot over the years, yet at the same time, it hasn't. Still fun though.
