There's definitely a lot of strategy involved. You an certainly get screwed earlier, but that's why every strategy needs to make dealing with those situations its number one priority.

Yeah, pretty much game over... which sucks to be doing so well and then BAM.
I finally got around to playing this the other day and I love it! Got all of my ships unlocked except Slug ( I killed the ship during the surrender event a few times before realizing it was the trigger) and crystal. Man I was so close on crystal, had the crew member out but by that time there were no more rock space hops.
I mostly play on easy(real normal) and not normal(real hard). I also started moving my continues to folders I created for those ships when I play them.(scumsave) But I don't need them that often really now that I got my strats down.
My favorite ship so far is Mantis B Gila Monster. The 4 man teleporter is so fun. Once you have a mix of Rock and Mantis guys that = 4 you can just wreck most ships crews. And you get soo much more scrap. By then end I have everything maxed out and 100's of scrap surplus on the final boss. It's a slow starter though and surviving until you pick up enough crew and weapons can be rough.
Shout outs to Kestral B Redtail and of course Osprey as well for just being strong well rounded weapons platforms. I'm still kind of learning the other ships while also playing some Risen 2.

I am still just real basic (recently learned how to survive teleport attacks) only have the engi ship A and B and the kestrel so far, but I don't get too hung up on dying. It's always amusing.
