Join the circle and share. What do you think of rated bg's?

I tried them for the first time tonight. My only complaint is the queue times, which were 10-20 minutes each time (we did four matches). At that rate it's difficult not only from a points perspective, but because it's kind of hard to maintain momentum, people have to drop off, you've been doing archeaology for 20 minutes and lost your thirst for blood, whatever.

Other than that, the system seems to be working as I'd hoped. We won 1 and lost 3, which is fair since the MMR's haven't spread out yet and we had a team with little-no resilience up against people who've been grinding honor since they hit 85 73 hours after launch, and were in full Bloodthirsty already. Mages with 125k HP and 85k mana are not people I'm prepared to beat.

447 points for a win seems like a good amount. The weekly cap sounds low to me in comparison to the cost of the pieces, but I have little/no arena experience so I don't know how the rate you can acquire equipment compares to seasons past.

And really, if nothing else, it's worth it just to look at the map in AB and see no idiots fighting on the road. I had a great time.

Consider that up to about 1800ish rating in arena, you're not going to see more then 500 arena points for 2v2 in a week, so it sounds like rated BGs are quite nice.

~3 wins for a capped week (and no arena necessary) sounds really good, TBH.

I've yet to try them, but I am definitely looking forward to it. PvP seems to have a breath of fresh air blown into it now with cata.

I'm happy with it. The number of points we got for our one win was motivating enough to offset how much time we ended up investing waiting in queues (and losing), and getting no points for a loss is also motivating in a different way. And I assume you get more points depending on your rating; at present my rating is, erm, 96.

I would note though that arena matches by and large take a lot less time than battlegrounds. And if it's anything like when I dipped my toe in during Wrath, there really aren't queue times to speak of. We were only able to do 4 battlegrounds in 3 hours; under the Wrath system I don't recall it taking more than half an hour or so to get my ten arena matches in the few times I tried it.

A winning battleground team could still cap in one night, though, and from what you're saying that isn't true of arena.

What I'd really quibble with is the 1350ish cap per week on conquest points in general. That's 15 weeks, almost 4 months, to a full set of gear. The cap doesn't change with your rating, does it? So even the best people have to wait four months for a full set? Is that normal? Does the season even last that long? Maybe I've just gotten spoiled being able to grind all the honor I want and get the lower tier gear at my own pace.

That's fairly normal except for the people hitting 2.5k in the first week of 5v5, yeah.

Basically 98% of your gear will be the honor gear (or last season's main gear) for a majority of the season unless you're in the top tiers of arena play.

Huh. I've never played competetively before so I had no idea. That kind of sucks, because I generally prefer to blame my dismal performance on the gear gap, and it seems there won't be one for a while. I guess I'll have to fall back on lag.

The cap will be changing depending on your raiting when the servers come down.

I haven't done any rated bgs, trying to get a good mage for RMP. Got a previous gladiator atm that looks hopeful!

Also still need to level my priest...

The differences between the different seasons of gear is actually relatively small. Look at the s3 to s4 gear from BC and the s7 to s8 gear you won't notice much of a huge gaping difference.

The gap comes when you're looking at say, s1 to s4 or s5 to s8. Getting the gear isn't honestly all that hard, getting to 1800 is the equivalent of staying at 1550 or so in BC.

All in all what I've learned is if you can learn to play with a gear handicap you can definately better your play competatively. There is nothing better than **** stomping someone in the latest pvp gear.
