So then they trade the gil to another character? The old shell game to try and hide the gil?

Can this be tracked?

Bah. Hope this is fixed. I spent all weekend harvesting next to those stupid teleport bots. Ugh, what a mess.

Really not much of a shell game. The game sees all. Data moves it gets recorded somewhere. If they passed that gil off 100s of times it might take them a while to track the trail down but if it's only once or twice removed from the person that did the hacking given a minute it's easily found.

Unluckily its's not that easy. Once the gil enters the free market, it cannot be tracked. E.g., assume the gilseller transfers gil by buying overpriced stuff from the buyer through the marketboard. How could SE tell whether the recipient of the money is a gilbuyer or just a legitimate lucky guy?

Maybe this is why so many people are crying foul at the blanket bans/suspensions, and the characters who were returned to active service (I can't think of a better term right now) with 90% of their gil confiscated, SE did push the (un)lucky 3rd party?

Well with how quickly movement and teleport hacks came to this game, it seems there's far too much trust in the client right now, and this hack is also exactly that. It does not bode well, that's for sure, but we can only wait and see.

And to think people ******* at SE for making 1.0's client more dependent on the server. Yeah the lag sucked but that was an engine problem. Player simply can't handle having a game "in their control" because they do stupid **** like this.

And yes, quite a lot of legit players utilize these.

Pretty much, now he'll get crucified and be back three days later.

Sad really.. People will do anything to cheat and it just runes the game for others.
Now SE has to spend time tracking this exploit down instead of developing new cool things to do for us....

I'm hoping they can do both simultaneously Smiley: grin

The employees who are responsible for creating new content hopefully aren't the same ones who track down RMT and cheaters.

No but the cheat or hack has to be closed or fixed by the programers.

Programmers, plural, and they're going to have a non-programmer do as much of the functional design and detective work in the code as they can for the cheaters, much as they'll have the new content team coming up with functional designs before handing it off to the programmers.

Functional design, technical design, and the actual programming are three separate areas in putting in programming changes. They will probably not be done by the same people. (They're not in my office and we have all of 15 people in our application development department.)

Most MMO work like catwho said.

You have a few actual coders/programers and they make 'tools'/ 'packages' type modules for non-coders to use. Think of it like this.

Coder makes tool to develop new weapons/gear
Developer uses said tool to generate weapon x/y/z
Testers verifies that weapon x/y/z are balanced, work, and arent bugged.

In this case, they are probably haveing Testers figure out how they are using the hacks. If they can the report it up a level to the developers, and if there is a tool they can use to fix it they will, otherwise they send it up another level to coders for them to find a way to fix it.

The biggest issue is all of the client side trust and how much of an overhaul it would need to get rid of certain types of hacks, they are probably better of developing a tool to detect it short term, and using it to ban hammer people who cheat until they can fully alter all of the client side trust issues.
