When I read this all I could think of were those foreigners from Family Guy who can't speak English.

Does any remember in FFXI in west saru,windurst (well I think it was east) with the big cliff right outside the entrance, with the long line of like 20 something fishing bots? lol

Same here, Pravus of Seraph (at the time. He's on Bismarck now.) He didn't have a token and picked up a trojan from FFXI-Atlas or one of the other sites when they were all getting infected with bad ads. Got hacked right in the middle of tanking Gulool Ja Ja. His character suddenly disconnected, then when it reconnected his girlfriend started yelling that it wasn't him that logged back on. They changed his password before he could wrest control back, logged in, and warped right out of the fight. (With our main tank down and our main WHM freaking out, needless to say we all wiped.)

The account was on the loose for less than two hours before the GMs got it but they stripped him of 20 million gil, that much again in ancient currency, and transferred everything off the char that wasn't rare/ex. He had to apply for a full character restore - which took three months - and they ended up rolling him back a few days and he lost a little bit of stuff, but no biggie at the time compared to everything else he got back, like his stage 4 Apocalypse.

The tokens were relatively new and cost $10 at the time, but they absolutely would have saved him months of grief.

I believe the app version of the tokens is free.

The easiest way to combat it is to not only not purchase gil, but rally against those who do. Too many people are quick to turn a blind eye at the real issue, that's the people buying it, not the one's selling it. To just sit back and expect SE to come swooping in on their white horse and save the game from the players themselves is just as it sounds, fantastical. I've excluded people from my friend list and actually belonged to a guild in the past that has kicked a few members for purchasing currency. And they had the audacity to brag about it, because they are used to the norm of people not saying anything, or worse yet, holding their hand out. That is all. :)

Bots arent why the economy is so low. The economy is low because everyone and their mother can make their own stuff and sell it. When you have 30 different people selling silver ore, all undercutting each other you arent going to make alot of money. Thats not a RMT issue, as they are hurt by this. No its a lack of excess gil in game coupled with a lack of need for crafted items. BTW Im on excalibur too.

Why? Do you think it inconceivable that SE's security could be breached, bypassing even authenticators? Or are you simply under the delusion that you are somehow special and nothing could possibly happen to you?

Of course many cases of stolen accounts are the owner's fault. But do not assume that this is 100% of all cases. And don't assume that because you have some technical knowledge that everyone should automatically undertand things the way you do.

It's absolutely possible he used the same username/password as he had used on another account whose credentials were stolen.

I dont want to have to use a token. It's a lot of extra trouble logging in, especially since you have to input it each time the server is full and you have to relog just to get the world-list during weekends.

I shouldnt be the only one keeping my account safe. SE should make it harder for them to login from lets say... the other side of the world... when clearly i do not play from that location... atleast not let them login from there without an e-mail confirmation or something.

I dont use the same password twice on any website, i have an second email account just for FFXI and FFXIV. Plus i dont use my gaming computer to look for ****. Not to mention i dont login on my FFXI(V) email from anywhere other than my gaming rig either. If that isnt enough to not get hacked, SE is doing something terribly wrong.

I've reported every single RMT so far i've seen shouting or gotten a tell from, three days later, most of them are still around. It's gotten to the point where i'm slowly giving up. Which is probably exactly what they want, but still. SE really needs to step up and stop the blatant RMT abuse in this game before it ruins it. Not economy wise, but fun wise. Cant even get into town now without having to blacklist yet another 2-3 people first.

OK I know no one wants to hear it but let's face it...
