Spotted at the official FFXIV forums;

"...We understand that some of you have some concerns regarding the item level restrictions for content; however, the development team is aware that there are players who are trying to challenge high level content without the proper amount of attack and defense, and would like to ensure that everyone participating in the content is on the same level.

Just to reiterate, this adjustment will be made in patch 2.1, and your average item level will be displayed in your character window. To coincide with this, we will also be adding a display for the required item level in the Duty Finder." --Camate, Community Rep

this is beautifully excellent, it's nice to know "hey, maybe i should gear up more before running this" because it creates hate in game that no one needs, especially if the heal, or tank roles arent up to the "par" and fail at their jobs directly because of low lvl gear

tl;dr

We only have so many instance servers and we don't want to waste the spots on people who are going to die anyway.

Also in 1.0 8 lala's beat ifrit naked. Not sure how close 2.0 is to that since I rerolled, but gear is "nice" but a skilled player can overcome most of the disadvantages.

Only thing is, everyone thinks they're that skilled player.

I don't have a problem with this. If I need guidance on my gear requirements then this will be there to inform me.

I can get a bit lost when it comes to gear. I have just been using what has been given to me through quests. It's nice to know that I need to upgrade before I waste my time and other peoples time.

Exactly. In WoW (which is relevant since much of this game is following along in their footprints), it went something like this if you were concentrating on endgame progression:
Hit max level
Do normal then hard mode 5 man dungeons until you get to a certain gear level that will allow you into LFR.
Do Looking For Raid and get to a higher gear level to get to the next LFR tier, etc.
Start doing normal mode raids with the better gear you got from raid finder.
After you knock out some or all of the normal mode raid content and get higher item level gear from that, do hard mode raid stuff.

Then after that's all over with wait until next expansion and replace that hard mode raid gear with quest greens and start all over.

PS: If anybody feels like throwing me a rate up I won't stop you. I have a feeling I'll be rated down because I mentioned WoW even though I was just trying to make a relevant post on the subject of item level gear and requirements. Smiley: dubious

First, they didn't beat Ifrit with level 1 weapons.

2. They have already stated that gear values will be important for hardmode/extreme mode

C. Without the required ATT and DEF math dictates failure.

In summary, yes player skill is important.

This just seems like it will help alleviate the frustrations I'm hearing of under geared players joining hardmode runs.

(Oops that Edit didn't work right.)

Oh well. I'm all for discussing the reasons people feel this feature will lead to elitism. I don't understand, so I am willing to listen to the reasons people feel that way.

The only problem I have with such gear "scores" is that it makes a clear indication that SE plans to have a near-brain-dead linear approach to equipment choices. Changing your outfit to suit the situation will likely not exist, nor will certain pieces of a set ever stand out as long-term pieces across other sets. Nope: the most recent instances will drop the most recent gear, and the most recent gear will have the highest level and the unquestionable spot of superiority.

On one hand it's nice to lock blatant leechers out of content in this way, but on the other it's sad to not have the ability to make a "build" in favour of simply collecting every piece of the latest equipment. For a game boasting more "open" classes, the selection of both equipment and abilities is quite controlled and obvious.

Actually, I do wonder how that part will work. Let's say you're a tank who has excellent physical defense gear, but you're about to go after a mob that has no physical attacks, but spams magic. So you switch to your magic defense build, but it's lower than the minimum item level because you've been working on your physical defense gear as a priority. Does a giant vortex open in the space-time continuum and kick you out of the dungeon right then and there for daring to gear up for the situation?

sadly i don't think they've made room for physical and magical defense builds...most if not all tank gear has identical def/mdef stats...

I think Llester has it right: bosses will probably require identical builds and so it won't come up. SE doesn't seem to want to introduce any grey areas in the game. Saying so sure makes people mad, though.

It made me pretty disappoint to realize this. I can see how broadcasting it would translate into "kill the messenger" for some people. It's one of the few issues I have with the streamlining of 1.0, but I guess you can't have it all.

You can still gear your tank with a DD build if you want...although speaking as a PLD/GLD it won't be much good for anything that requires a group ( and obviously not allowed for any kind of DF activities anyway). But it will let you kill things a little faster in FATEs/leves/quests /shrug

I doubt you would be kicked once you were already in the instance. People famously cheezed WoW's Looking For Raid finder by getting higher level PVP gear and queuing up with it on to get past the item level check. As others have said, though, I don't think this game would introduce any specific attributes to make a boss that would only be locked to one mode for the whole fight anyway.
