This goes for ALL classes. AoE's are bad news. Players that like to sit in one spot during fights will have a tough time in some dungeons and possibly advance quests. I know its not comfortable and requires more work to move around in fights, some fights require that you do. I understand connection issues can sometime come into effect, but your hand-to-eye coordination are always in effect. You don't need lightning fast reaction time, but you do need to react.

If you're unfamiliar with the strafe feature, please take time to find out how to get your character to strafe. When you are out soloing, practice moving around in fights until they become 2nd nature; dungeon fights and dodging AoEs will become much easier.

All I need to see is big red glowing circle or cone, or any shape, be it hexagon, octagon, pentagon, etc, and I'm long gone.

By the same token, please have patience with healers who might have got caught in an AoE. Unlike physical attack jobs they have to stand still for 95% of their abilities so it's not like they can stay moving by default, plus they have to pay attention to your health bars and status effects to keep you alive and functioning, all the while crowd controlling and avoiding adds, on top of making sure they aren't about to eat an AoE. Sometimes, you don't always get it right the first time. So, please, don't lose your top at the healer. It's a tough job.

This thread mainly applies to players who do not grasp the concept of moving at all during a fight.

There are also times where AoE's have a rediculously short charge time, the boss from Brayflox's Longstop comes to mind. By the time you see the red cone extend from the front, you need to have moved already or you're getting caught in it.

People also need to understand that with 1 second timers, you could technically dodge it if you're lucky, but you're just going to end up taking a few hits here and there. Not get their panties in a bunch since you didnt dodge it. This comming from DD's then who could have played a tank job themselves but didnt want to due to the same abuse they'd get.

Being aware of your surroundings would help too. Strictly speaking outside of instances. I was in a FATE with biggest crab in FF history and the guy who had aggro was kiting it all over the place, making it hard for any others to attack it. All the while forgetting that the buzzards are aggro-on-sight mobs and he ended up aggroing *all* of them, and getting him self killed.

Hell, if you are quick enough, you can even dodge non-cone/AoE moves. During the beta, I routinely dodged the wolves' "dirty claw" style move by just backing out of melee range as it charged. Yet, time and again, I'd see other players just standing there and getting destroyed by it.

Honestly, I never lock on, and I pretty much run about a lot during a fight trying to figure out what moves I can avoid. Just makes sense.

Right and tanks need to be aware of the healer, make sure the mob is not facing them.
It is hard to run and heal.

When people die it is almost always a dd's fault and I am not talking the tank either. Usually in this game it is a dd that runs ahead of the tank and gets initial hate or does not get out of aoe and requires a cure at the wrong time.. In FFXI is was a DD that thought it was funny to pull hate,

As an archer it is second nature to move around but yea those charge times are way to fast sometimes. I like to use repelling shot sometimes to get out, makes me look cool XD

and remember running forward and/or side strafing is faster than backing up or turning then running

I can dodge AoE fairly well. There are times though, where if you ever hesitate for a second, you're not dodging it. The dragon breath is a good example in brayflox, and the titan knockout punch is another. If you're not already prepared to move, it's easy to get caught between moves. I'm pretty sure they made some of the charges quicker since they changed the hitboxes to the dots instead of the full character circle they had in beta. The brayflox dragon is a much shorter window then it was in beta p3, of that I'm sure.

I really wish my PC was up to spec so I could compare the AOE response times between them.

There were notable differences between the PS2 and PC versions in appearance, and timing of incoming attacks (Two-boxing my wife's Taru was great for side-by-side comparisons at Nidhogg).

On my PS3, there are times you can run the instant it pops, and you get nailed half a screen away.. and times you can stand 2 pixels out and be missed entirely. Thankfully it's often visible to your teammates, so the best you can do is hope for a fast connection and a bit of good old fashioned luck.

It would really be a shame if this isn't some fixable thing, but one would hope for some resolution in the PS4 version with the extra horsepower applied.

One thing you need to look at is the wifi-esque icon at the upper right. If it isn't fully filled, yea, you will likely be hit due to lag unless you absolutely bail out of range entirely.

Well that's a poor assumption.

I've seen as many tanks who stand in red shapes and can't hold aggro from a healer as I've seen DDs who pull threat and stand in the death. And the fact that there are twice as many DDs in a group as there are tanks is telling there.

Basically, bad players are bad. They can be playing any role, and they're still bad. It's the price you pay for playing in random DF groups. Want to not deal with it? Play with people you know aren't snacking on paint chips.

This does seem to be a prevalent assumption though... I had a healer yell at me (monk) in Brayflox the other day because the tank got creamed on the first boss because he stood in the death. Healer yelled at me to kill adds, which was all I'd been doing actually. But the assumption was that something went wrong and therefore the dd is obviously to blame.

Stop it.

unfortunatley no one ever wants to take responsibility for their mistakes, it's always somebody else. It takes a great amount of courage to admit you made a mistake. However with the nature of this game and the complexity of the battles, it can be really tough sometimes to pinpoint exactly what the problem is.

A trick i use (this doesn't always apply, but use it when appropriate), is to blame yourself for a mistake. Reflect on the situation and ask yourself "what could i have tried to do to prevent what happened". This will make you a better player overall, because you will start to find instances where you can do things you didn't think of before. Maybe grab hate if you see someone about to die if your a DPS. Your not as squishy as a mage and will most likely only take a few hits as the tank gets hate back. Or maybe your the Paladin and notice the WHM has too many people to take care of at the moment but your ok. Toss out that cure which will get you hate and keep people alive. Basically what i'm trying to say is, always find a way to improve and don't blame others for their shortcomings (with some exceptions of course, but don't simply blame them, give them some pointers/tips too).

This is very true. I died on the last boss in The Stone Vigil because I got caught in the blizzard circle and then ice breath a sec later because I was healing the Tank who was at 25%. The boss was at like 5% so the party was able to beat him with the SMN taking over healing and LB. The Stone Vigil is a test of dodging skills. Luckily for me I've been in runs with people who know how to move out the way and I got my first SCH onry book Ars Notoria. :)
