As a fairly casual player and a completionist, I figure it'll take me at least a couple years to cap all classes to 50. By which time the cap will be higher and double the content will be available. Not worried.

It is a different kind of game, specially compared to FFXI. The industry is leaning toward more casual gaming, i believe one of the reasons is because they are catering to the increasing demographic of adult video game players. I am 26 right now and if FFXI were to come out tomorrow instead of 2002, I wouldn't know if I could dedicate enough time to that game as I did in the previous years. FFXIV suits my current lifestyle better as I am sure it will fit with many others'.

Them young whippersnappers that have a lot more time in their hands and rush to get 50 on all classes will soon find themselves bored. However Yoshi has truly earned my respect and I know more exciting content will grace us in the near future and for many years to come. I believe in the longevity of this game at least for a certain demographic.

There is way more content in FFXIV ARR than there was in EQ when it launched, FFXI when it launched and WoW when it launched.

The problem is not so much the quantity as the fact that most of it can be cleared in half a month.

Seriously, I should not be seeing people with one or more capped crafts, and battle classes outfitted in full Darklight armour on day 9. And the argument that "It'll sure take a awhile to get all classes to 50" isn't that compelling, as realistically most anybody would be pretty bored after running through the first half-dozen (not to mention that it only gets faster when leveling a subsequent class).

Honestly, FFX|V, as it is right now, has the longevity of a gnat.

Whoa whoa, put down the torches and pitchforks and let me explain.

Because they had to cater to the level 50's on the legacy servers or risk losing their business/having them burn the content up like matchsticks, they had to shorten the level curve to 50 so the new players could catch them. Since they are focused on endgame, it means they need to rapidly roll out a ton of content. It's a losing proposition (see FFXI's dire state right now). You see, it normally takes a few years for endgame content to truly build up to the point where there is always lots to do. FFX|V is trying to do that in a few months time.

However, there is only so much a dev team can make so fast. Look at the unicorn mount, for example. Why is it the only job-specific mount? Well, technically it isn't. It's just the only one they added. So far. They will add more. Eventually. When they get to it. And when is that? Well, soon. But right now they are working on something else. Then when they release that, it will need patches and tweets. But people will still want their mounts. And other instances. And more quests. And yadda yadda yadda.

FFXI is showing what happens when you continually blow your load over and over trying to fill the corners with content without properly releasing it and supporting it. You overwhelm the players, they get bored and just sit back waiting for you to finish. No one wants to invest the time in Event A when you just announced Event B is coming in a month and will have gear vastly superior than Event A. They will wait for Event B. It's a losing concept.

I totally respect Yoshi, but I think his vision sees past where reality can be.
