Honestly it's just player empathy for the fictional character. Legolis (or however it's spelled) was quite the popular name in EQ. Overdone? Absolutely. But a cookie for the player who lands the real name first.

You could always just ignore it and not even complain about it. Stupid names are not actually hurting you. In fact, if someone is happy because their character is named Geoff Stark or whatever, who are you to complain about it? Xxcloud Sephirothxx may have the worst name in the game but it really is none of your business. Relax and enjoy the game.

I don't know. Sometimes you can discern information about a player based on their name just as you can discern information about a person with their mannerisms, clothing, facial expressions, etc in real life.

Granted, it's not always an accurate assessment so it's best to at least give them a chance.

I must admit...the first day of EA I claimed Ritsuko Akagi and Yui Hikari. >_> Of course Rei was already taken!

Wasn't there an NPC in FFXI that would make fun of Sephiroth names? Something like:

"Hey you, SephirothxXx or xSephirothx or whatever your name is..."

And here i assumed the "Slepnir" result was an homage to EVE online..... another great MMORPG. Tech II ships anyone?

hmm. not sure about EVE. but for those who wish to know. Yggdrasill is Odin's gallows. and his gallows name is Sleipnir.
-edit- i like names that reference old world mythology. makes for an interesting conversation piece at times... and makes me feel... slightly educated i guess.

I've seen a lot of variations on Erza Scarlett from Fairy Tail. Just look at all the Erzas.

I also saw Titania Scarlett (she is called "the Titania")

I can't say anything, I had an Erza Scarlett in Beta 3.

How can you ignore three arrows in rapid succession while sliding down the trunk of a giant falling elephant? No but really, these characters and heroes already have their own story... and it certainly did not begin with them beating up Lady Bugs and tiny ground squirrels in Eorzea. I would much rather develop an alter ego and work on that character, versus trying to pretend like I am making Braveheart 2... Maybe its just me.

But seriously though, i see SO many names that i just know people will absolutely regret taking if they play past the first "free" month of the game. They should know they cant change their names, yet they chose the most horrible misspellings and what else not. Why? Just to troll us?

I was in a FATE grind party with 4 Kiritos. When I asked if we could number their foreheads so the rest of us could tell them apart they didn't find it very funny.

I was one of 4 Stevens in one of my PEs classes. Could go the PE coach approach, and just call people by their last name.
